“Spa Night” and “Fire Island” filmmaker Andrew Ahn is set to direct Lily Gladstone and Bowen Yang in a new take on “The Wedding Banquet” that has been described as a “reimagination” of Ang Lee’s beloved 1993 film.
The new project, which was announced on Thursday by co-producers Bleecker Street and Shivhans Pictures and begins filming in May, is based on a new script by Ahn and frequent Lee collaborator James Schamus, who co-wrote the original film.
Lee’s “The Wedding Banquet” won the Golden Bear at the 1993 Berlin International Film Festival and helped cement his status as a notable figure in the global film community. The film stars Winston Chao as a gay Taiwanese man living in America who agrees to a marriage of convenience with a female friend, only to find his life complicated when his overbearing parents travel to America to plan his wedding banquet. In “Pushing Hands”, the first entry into his what would later be known as “Father Knows Best”-Trilogy, director Ang Lee had already explored the clash of Western and Eastern ideals. In this case, the main character, played by Lung Sihung (who plays the part of a father in every entry of the trilogy) has been living for quite some time in the US, without making any effort in trying to fit in, while at the same time attempting to preserve his Confucian views on life, character and the world in general. Since he had already finished the script for “The Wedding Banquet”, the second feature within the trilogy, this would be Lee's next project and the first one to be also released theatrically in the United States. This time, however, he would show a main character convinced he had evaded the traditions of his parents, until he can no longer hide from them.

The following article contains major spoilers for the novels Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror and The Trench, as well as the feature films The Meg and Meg 2: The Trench.
One year before Steven Spielberg made us all afraid to go into the water, Peter Benchley’s 1974 novel Jaws took the literary world by storm. Nearly fifty years after publication it remains one of the most popular examples of shark fiction with few titles entering the waters of its elite circle. One such novel is Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror by Steve Alten.
Published in 1997, this sci-fi horror brings to life Otodus megalodon, a prehistoric relative of the great white shark estimated to stretch up to 65 feet in length. The novel pits retired rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham in the movies) against this mammoth beast after it escapes from a warmer pocket of water near the Mariana Trench.

The following contains major spoilers for The Meg and Meg 2: The Trench.
Sharksploitation movies live and die based on the strength of their bite. In order to make us afraid to go in the water, genre filmmakers usually deploy a barrage of visual and practical effects to bring to life the ocean’s most feared predator: the shark. Of the many aquatic horror films to hit the screen, few have featured teeth so big and vicious as The Meg.
Jon Turteltaub’s action-packed shark film brings to life Otodus megalodon, the largest predator the world has ever known. Thought to be extinct, a group of oceanic explorers discover this prehistoric shark species lurking beneath the thermocline, a temperature barrier near the ocean floor. A box office hit, The Meg won over audiences with its splashy energy, dynamic special effects, and a captivating performance from action star Jason Statham. Five years later,...

Shark thriller “The Meg” will take a bite out of the North American box office with about $32 million in its opening weekend at 4,188 locations, early estimates showed Friday.
“The Meg,” starring Jason Statham and a 75-foot prehistoric shark, is over-performing forecasts, which had been pegged in the $20 million to $22 million range. The movie — which has been in development for two decades — generated a solid $4 million in Thursday night previews, double what “Skyscraper” took last month on its way to a $24 million opening weekend.
Paramount’s third weekend of “Mission: Impossible — Fallout” is declining about 57% to the $17 million range to finish second. Disney’s second weekend of “Christopher Robin” and the launch of Spike Lee’s “BlacKkKlansman” will be battling for third in the $11 million to $13 million range, followed by Sony’s debut of horror movie “Slender Man” with about $10 million.

Shark thriller “The Meg” swam to an impressive $4 million on Thursday night.
Meanwhile, Sony’s horror movie “Slender Man” launched with $1 million at 2,109 sites in previews. Focus Features did not release numbers for Spike Lee’s crime drama “BlacKkKlansman.”
Warner Bros.’ “The Meg,” starring Jason Statham, has been forecast to finish in the $20 million to $22 million range at 4,118 domestic sites during its opening weekend. That may be enough to take first place away from the third frame of Tom Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible — Fallout,” which has hauled a strong $138.6 million domestically in its first 13 days.
“The Meg,” directed by Jon Turteltaub, is based on Steve Alten’s 1997 book, “Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror.” The story follows efforts by scientists — played by Statham, Li Bingbing, Winston Chao, and Ruby Rose — to stop a prehistoric 75-foot Megalodon shark from terrorizing a beach in China.

The Meg may seem like a film you would watch late at night on a basic cable channel but the $150 million dollar budget says otherwise. The film, based on the popular book Meg, is Jaws on steroids with more humor and in this insistence, that is a good thing. The plot? Well, it’s marine biologists and Jason Statham trying to stop a 75-foot-long prehistoric shark known as the Megalodon, i.e. the Meg, from eating people. That about sums up the film.
Oh, you want the longer form of the plot? Jonas Taylor (Statham) is an expert sea diver and Naval Captain who aborted his mission and half his crew when he encountered the Meg several years ago. No...

For some, summer is not complete without a shark movie or a dinosaur one. The Meg is both in a way, about a giant prehistoric shark, the megadon, thought to be extinct which has somehow survived hidden from view but now released to terrorize all in the sea. This scare thriller also has a bonus for fans of The Transporter, star Jason Statham as a tough guy who specializes in deep-sea rescues, kind of a Transporter under the waves. Statham makes this film a bit of a Jaws meets Transporter mash-up.
Ever since Jaws, audiences have craved shark movies. While Jurassic Park created a similar itch for dinosaur movies, The Meg is basically a shark movie.

Ever since Steven Spielberg set foot on the beach, directors have been attempting to recapture a similar level of thrills and artistry in the shark movie, usually towing either the intimately terrifying line or opting for over-the-top, scenery-chewing bombast. Far from the pared-down horror of something like Open Water, the latest selachian feature The Meg goes for broke with the notion that bigger is better, making the strong case of disproving that exact statement. Taking far too long to get to people-chomping thrills, Jon Turtletaub eventually settles into a handful of entertaining set pieces, but is often sidetracked by a script that plays it safe in both structure and bloodletting.
A gigantic shark species that makes Jaws look like Nemo, The Megaladon was thought to be extinct for a few million years, but has now risen from the depths of the ocean thanks to the stupidity of humanity–specifically a...

When it comes to beating the summer doldrums, nothing is better than going to the movies. Whether it’s just to spend a few hours in a darkened room with the A/C blasting to find some reprieve from the heat, or it’s just to get lost in the world of big-screen visuals while munching on popcorn, summer movies often provide us with some much-needed escapism, which perfectly sums The Meg up to a T. It’s an action-fueled monster movie that delivers some solid moments of suspense and spectacle, although I do wish the script spent more time diving deeper instead of treading shallow water most of the time.
As far as the plot goes, The Meg follows a team of researchers who work for an international undersea program and dive into uncharted waters (quite literally and slightly figuratively in this instance), where they encounter an unseen monstrosity that attacks their submersible,...

On June 20, 1975 a thriller from a relatively unknown filmmaker was unleashed on unsuspecting theatre goers. Audiences witnessed, mostly from surface water level, the birth of the original Summer Blockbuster, Steven Spielberg’s Jaws. People had never seen this type of visceral carnage before in cinemas and subsequently it had a terrifying impact of beach goers that summer. There is something so primal and horrific about the now iconic scene of the dolly zoom on Martin Brody’s shocked face after Alex Kintner is attacked.
Based on the hit bestseller from author Peter Benchley, the suspense novel is the story of three men searching for a great white shark preying upon a beach resort. After first publication in February 1974, the novel was a great success, with the hardback...

While Disney has held many of the biggest box office hits this summer, the season has also been very good to Focus Features. Universal’s arthouse wing has already found big success with the Fred Rogers doc “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?,” and now looks to keep adult audiences coming in with Spike Lee’s confrontational Ku Klux Klan period film, “BlacKkKlansman.”
It’s the start of what could be Focus’ most stacked slate in its 16-year history. In addition to the two aforementioned films, Focus’ awards season lineup includes Joel Edgerton’s adaptation of the Lgbt novel “Boy Erased,” the Saoirse Ronan/Margot Robbie-fronted “Mary Queen of Scots,” and the Ruth Bader Ginsburg biopic “On the Basis of Sex,” all of which could earn Oscar nominations in January.

WaterTower Music has announced today’s release of the soundtrack to the science fiction action thriller “The Meg,” directed by Jon Turteltaub (the “National Treasure” movies), which will be released in theaters August 10, 2018. After two decades in the deep waters of development, prehistoric shark actioner “The Meg” is finally ready to swim into the late-summer box office.
Steve Alten, the author of the novel on which the film is based, thought many times over that the project might sink without a ripple. When Alten was 15 in 1975, he became a huge fan of Steven Spielberg’s smash hit “Jaws” — which inspired him to begin exploring the idea of a giant prehistoric shark species somehow surviving in today’s world.
Hollywood has produced plenty of shark movies since “Jaws,” but “Meg” was stuck in development hell for more than two decades. It’s finally being released on Aug. 10, starring Jason Statham, directed by Jon Turteltaub, and written by Dean Georgaris and brothers Jon and Erich Hoeber.

While no project is ever guaranteed to be a success, Jason Statham vs. a gigantic prehistoric shark seems like a pretty hard concept to screw up. Of course, we’re talking about The Meg, Jon Turteltaub’s deep-sea thriller that resurrects a long-dormant monster in the megalodon.
Standing in its way, of course, is Statham’s gruff diver Jonas Taylor, who will go through hell and high water as he embarks on a collision course with a 95-foot-long prehistoric shark, which hasn’t roamed this planet for millennia. And yet, one particularly stubborn beast has somehow managed to avoid the jaws of extinction, and begins feeding on anyone (and indeed anything) between it and the mainland.
Close the beaches, folks, it’s no longer safe to go in the water. Or at least, that’s what we’ve gathered from these 20 new photos, with Warner Bros. dropping a huge gallery...

As The Meg‘s larger-than-life promotional campaign begins to enter the homestretch now, Warner Bros. has today unveiled yet another international one-sheet for what may well be the year’s ultimate popcorn movie.
It’s certainly a far cry from the sun-soaked poster we saw last week, as this one is set underwater and unlike most of the others, actually shows off the entire main cast. Still, it’s another welcome look at what’s shaping up to be one of 2018’s most exciting films. Even if some of the Photoshop work on display here is a bit questionable.
That aside, it’s another great poster to add to The Meg‘s growing collection, and as this is a joint venture with the Beijing-based Gravity Pictures, studio execs will no doubt be crossing their fingers in the hope that Jon Turteltaub’s deep-sea thriller makes a big splash in the Middle Kingdom come next month.

It’s certainly a far cry from the sun-soaked poster from earlier in the week – the only real similarity is that it’s captured underwater, where we see Steve Alten’s 75-foot megalodon bare down on its prey: Jason Statham and Li Bingbing.
They’re each piloting a rocket-propelled submersible, though even the latest underwater technology is no match for this beast, which appears to have just sunk its super-sized teeth into a giant squid, based on the wisps of black smoke rising against the deep blue sea.
If nothing else, it’s just another insanely cool poster to add to The Meg‘s collection, and as this is a joint venture with the Beijing-based Gravity Pictures, Warner Bros. brass will...

A new TV spot has been released for Jason Statham's upcoming giant shark film The Meg. This movie looks so over-the-top and ridiculous that there's no doubt it's going to be a crazy fun film. It's Jason Statham taking on a giant ass shark! What's there not to be excited about!
In the film, a deep-sea submersible—part of an international undersea observation program—has been attacked by a massive creature, previously thought to be extinct, and now lies disabled at the bottom of the deepest trench in the Pacific…with its crew trapped inside. With time running out, expert deep-sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) is recruited by a visionary Chinese oceanographer (Winston Chao), against the wishes of his daughter Suyin (Li Bingbing), to save the crew—and the ocean itself—from this unstoppable threat: a pre-historic 75-foot-long shark known as the Megalodon. More than 20 years have passed since Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror swam into bookstores, and now, we’re finally on the verge of Steve Alten’s giant shark thriller being realized on the big, big screen.
Yes, The Meg is barrelling down on its early August release, and with little over four weeks to go until the big day, Warner Bros. has today unleashed another promo for Jon Turteltaub’s deep-sea monster movie.
The kicker? Warner’s larger-than-life thriller pits Jason Statham on a collision course with a 95-foot-long prehistoric shark known as a megalodon (again), which hasn’t roamed this planet for millennia. And yet, one particularly stubborn beast has somehow managed to avoid the jaws of extinction, and begins chomping on anyone (and indeed anything) between it and the mainland. Warner Bros. has released a new international trailer and poster for The Meg, which awesomely centers around Jason Statham fighting a giant-ass shark known as the Megalodon. In real life, Statham is probably the only person in the world that could handle a situation like this.
There's a good amount of new footage in this trailer that gives us a proper set up of the story and a lot more shark chomping action!

"A living fossil." "Thought to have been extinct..." Warner Bros has debuted a brand new Chinese trailer for Jon Turtletaub's giant shark movie The Meg, a long-awaited adaptation of Steve Alten's novel, about a 70-foot long angry, prehistoric shark. The plot is about a group of researchers in a big deep-sea submersible stuck at the bottom of the ocean after being attacked, with Jason Statham trying to rescue them and get rid of the shark. This was co-financed by a Chinese company, and this trailer includes a number of key shots of Li Binging as Suyin, of course. The Meg co-stars Winston Chao, Rainn Wilson, Ruby Rose, Page Kennedy, Jessica McNamee, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Robert Taylor, Cliff Curtis, Shuya Sophia Cai, and Masi Oka. There's not a ton of new footage in this trailer, but it's fun to watch. Plus, I don't know about everyone else, but I'm already...

If Jaws is often cited as the first true summer blockbuster, then director Jon Turteltaub is about to take the idea of giant shark thriller and dial things up to 11.
We are, of course, referring to The Meg, Turteltaub’s zany summer flick aiming to become your next guilty pleasure. It has all the main ingredients, too: a gruff Jason Statham, tongue-in-cheek humor, and a prehistoric shark that hails from the Early Miocene era.
But there is one particularly stubborn beast that has somehow – almost inexplicably – defied extinction. And that’s where The Meg begins. It’s been set for a mid-August release by the Powers That Be, and in order to ensure excitement is at a fever-pitch, a new international promo has surfaced today, and it arguably presents our best look yet at 2018’s most bizarre movie. And in the year of Avengers: Infinity War, Ready Player One and Hereditary,...

Deep sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) sees all of his worst nightmares manifest before his very eyes in this new action shot from The Meg.
Coming to us by way of Empire (h/t Bloody Disgusting), this striking and deeply unsettling photo places Taylor directly in front of a 75-foot Megalodon shark, which hasn’t roamed the Earth in almost 2.6 million years. But for Jon Turteltaub’s The Meg, itself a loose adaptation of the eponymous horror-thriller novel from Steve Alten, one particularly aggressive Megalodon somehow managed to escape the jaws of extinction, leaving the door open for a larger-than-life summer movie that’s so big, it makes Jaws seem like small fry by comparison.
As for Jason Statham’s character, he’s a seasoned diver whose previous experience with the prehistoric beast proves indispensable, as it makes him one of the few people on Earth capable of stopping the underwater titan.

Jason Statham, Li Bingbing, and Winston Chao fight a prehistoric shark dinosaur in a Lost World-style underwater wonderland. The Meg Sign me up. In the film, a deep-sea submersible—part of an international undersea observation program—has been attacked by a massive creature, previously thought to be extinct, and now lies disabled at the bottom of the deepest trench in the Pacific…with its crew trapped inside. With time running out, expert deep sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) is recruited by a visionary Chinese oceanographer (Winston Chao), against the wishes of his daughter Suyin (Li Bingbing), to save the crew—and the ocean itself—from this unstoppable threat: a pre-historic 75-foot-long shark known as the Megalodon. What no one could have imagined is that, years before, Taylor had...

Ever since Jaws caused moviegoers to be afraid of going back into the water in 1975, the concept of rampaging sharks has been a staple in the horror, thriller and science fiction genres, often blurring the lines between them. And while the topic of today’s discussion isn’t nearly as over the top as the likes of Sharknado, Sharktopus and Ghost Shark, it sure has been generating its share of online buzz as of late.
We are, of course, talking about The Meg. In it, “a deep-sea submersible—part of an international undersea observation program—has been attacked by a massive creature, previously thought to be extinct, and now lies disabled at the bottom of the deepest trench in the Pacific…with its crew trapped inside.

Consider this one summer’s easiest — if not quickest — sell: It’s Jason Statham, battling a giant shark. Long-in-the-works, would-be blockbuster “The Meg” finally cruises into theaters this summer with an appetite for both blood and destruction. And that’s to say nothing of what the shark wants (which, yes, appears to be much of the same).
At first blush, “The Meg” looks like an unholy — but surely very entertaining — cross between “Deep Blue Sea” (another shark movie set on an exceedingly swanky research facility) and “Jurassic Park” (this particular shark is a prehistoric one, a monster from the past still alive today), a giant-sized “Jaws” for the popcorn cinema crowd. Basically, the perfect summer movie. And yet this one comes with an added edge that seems poised to make it even more wild: Statham’s character and the massive shark have a past together.

Jason Statham battles a gigantic, 75-foot-long shark in the first trailer for New Line Cinema’s “The Meg.”
In the trailer, a creature called Megalodon, previously believed to be extinct, attacks an undersea observation program, causing the crew to be trapped at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. Deep sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Statham) must race against the clock to save the crew, as well as everyone else that comes in the way of “The Meg.”
Li Bingbing, Rainn Wilson, Robert Taylor, Ruby Rose and Winston Chao also star in the science fiction action thriller directed by “Last Vegas” director Jon Turteltaub.

Honestly, the Meg puts Bruce from “Jaws” to shame in every way possible. This one seems bigger, more vicious, and more out for blood.
“The Meg” will hit theaters on August 10.
