Netting Sandra Ng Best Actress honors from the Hong Kong Film Awards and Shu Qi Best Supporting from the same competition and Golden Horse, “Portland Street Blues” is a spin-off of the “Young and Dangerous” series, focusing, however, on a female character this time.

The story starts with Sister 13 already being a boss, although her life is not exactly easy within the utterly male-dominated triad world and the fact that she is a lesbian does not make things any easier. After a few scenes in the present, and during a ceremony for the day of the death of her father, she begins narrating her life story to her comrades. Her father was a gambling addict who was repeatedly exploited by triad members, and particularly one mentioned as Sob, while Sister 13 was mostly hanging around with Kristy, trying to hustle some money here and there,...

What character in cinematic history has appeared in the most films? Our friend the Internet says that Sherlock Holmes holds the record, followed by Dracula. However, most people outside of Asia might not realize that possibly third on the list is a Chinese martial arts practitioner and physician named Wong Fei-hung, who was a real person who lived mostly in the Canton area from 1847-1925. Wong became a cultural folk hero in his native country, spawning literature, comics, television series, and many, many films.

The action film as a category, with or without the comedy, found its apogee repeatedly during the golden era of Hong Kong cinema, with the catalogue of masterpieces of the genre being rather long in this case. “Time and Tide” is definitely among them.
Tyler who works as bartender, impregnates a lesbian cop, Ah Jo, after she gets drunk after a fight with her girlfriend. Although she does not want anything to do with him, he joins an unlicensed bodyguard service led by Uncle Ji, to earn money to give her. Nearly nine months later, Tyler meets up with a butcher named Jack and his pregnant wife, Ah Hui , who helps Tyler prevent her father’s assassination at his birthday. Tyler, who is still giving money to Ah Jo, tries to convince Jack to start a bodyguard service with him, but Jack turns him down.

The adventures of Wong Fei-hung continue in Beijing this time, in the most personal film of the trilogy, as his father is introduced and plays a significant part in the narrative, and also the most impressive, in visual terms.
The reason for Wong’s return is Beijing is the Cantonese Ten Tigers Association, a meeting of the most significant fighters of South China, where Wong Kei-ying, his father, is also participating. During the time, Empress Dowager Cixi and Li Hongzhang decide to stage a lion dance competition to showcase Chinese martial arts and restore national pride. Interested parties from all over China are invited to participate and compete for the title of “Lion Dance King”. Upon his arrival in the capital, Fei-hung realizes that the various lion dance troupes have started to fight among themselves and even more, that that his father has been attacked by a wealthy rival martial artist,...

With the success of the first part, both commercially and in terms of quality, a second part was bound to be produced. What was a surprise though, was the fact that the sequel was even better than the original one, particularly because the winning team of Tsui Hark, Jet Li and Yuen Woo Ping received a more than worthy addition, that of Donnie Yen. Let us take things from the beginning though.

Mr. Marco Saldana has a nice ring to it! Zoe Saldana revealed that her husband, Marco Perego, took her last name — and it's because they are equals. In a nontraditional move, the groom wanted to take his bride's last name, much to her resistance. "I tried to talk him out of it," Saldana confessed to [...]...

Back in the crazy heyday of Hong Kong cinema, the word ‘naked’ used to appear in film titles a lot, particularly in those produced by schlockmeister Wong Jing. Notable examples of this were cult favourites “Naked Killer” (1992) and “Naked Weapon” (2002), two films revolving around sexy, scantily clad (or indeed naked) female assassins, with plenty of blood and bullets thrown in. Forming a loose series of sorts, the two have now been joined by “Naked Soldier”, again with Wong Jing as producer, and directed by Marco Mak (“Wo Hu”), with industry legend Sammo Hung on hand, backed by the expected bevy of limber beauties, including up and coming actress Jennifer Tse (sister of Nicholas Tse, and who also recently appeared in “Hong Kong Ghost Stories”) in the title role. The film kicks off in 1980 with Sammo as Interpol agent Lung, taking a trip to the states after successfully pulling off a massive drugs bust.

Uber-producer Wong Jing returns with Naked Soldier, the third of his Naked movies, in what appears to be a decennial tradition, following on from Naked Killer in 1992 and 2002's Naked Weapon. This time Marco Mak is in the director's chair and Jennifer Tse is the drop dead gorgeous killer, who slowly discovers that she had a different life before becoming a cold-blooded assassin. I'm curious to see how well Tse shapes up as an action heroine, as the film sees her going head-to-head with the likes of Sammo Hung, Philip Ng and Andy On. If martial arts prowess proves to run in the Tse family then Naked Soldier has every chance of being a somewhat guilty pleasure. However, the first trailer showed Tse doing...

I know most people aren’t as excited about this one as I am, but that’s because they don’t appreciate a good girls-and-guns flick when they see it. Andy Sidaris is treated like a God in my house, and director Marco Mak’s “Naked Soldier” seems to exist somewhere between “Hard Ticket to Hawaii” and Corey Yuen’s “So Close”. I know this is supposed to carry on in the tradition of “Naked Weapon”, but, to me, it doesn’t have the same tone. Maybe that’s just me looking back on that flick with rose-colored glasses. Anyway, take a look at this synopsis: Interpol agent Ck Long busted a billion-dollar drug deal fifteen years ago. The cartel has avenged itself by hiring Madame Rose’s organization of assassins to kill Ck Long’s entire family. In revenge, she kills the entire family of chief investigator Ck Long.

It’s been almost one year ago to the day that we last covered director Marco Mak’s hot chick-oriented action endeavor “Naked Soldier”, another upcoming motion picture which features action choreography from Corey Yuen. The latest poster — which has been lovingly installed to the left — looks to carry on in the tradition of “Naked Weapon”, the Wong Jing-produced cheesefest starring the the gorgeous Maggie Q. Chinese movie-goers will finally have an opportunity to see the flick when it arrives in theaters this summer. In case you’ve forgotten, here’s what the flick is about: Interpol agent Ck Long busted a billion-dollar drug deal fifteen years ago. The cartel has avenged itself by hiring Madame Rose’s organization of assassins to kill Ck Long’s entire family. In revenge, she kills the entire family of chief investigator Ck Long. Long himself survives, and believes his young daughter is still alive.

What's old is new again. Exactly two decades ago, notorious filmmaker Wong Jing produced Naked Killer, a "Girls With Guns" film that became a Hong Kong cult classic due to its graphic violence and explicit sexual nature. He then followed it up a decade later with Naked Weapon, an unrelated film but containing similar themes. Now he's at it once again in this decade with Naked Soldier and while times have changed, the level of sex and violence continues to stay the same. I tend to smirk when I hear about producers who've said a movie won't play well in Middle America. But if there is a movie to which such a ridiculous generalized statement might apply, it's Somewhere. I say this as a fan of director Sofia Coppola's early work (The Virgin Suicides, Lost in Translation).
Johnny Marco (Stephen Dorff) is a fortysomething action movie star who dwells in the famed Chateau Marmont hotel in La. He doesn't instigate much in the film -- things just happen around him or to him. A friend throws parties in Johnny's suite, female hotel-dwellers flirt ceaselessly with him, and work-wise, his assistant/agent arranges everything for him: he just shows up.
For a film directed by a female, it's strange how dominant the male gaze is in Somewhere. Johnny sleepily watches pole-dancing strippers from his bed, women flash their breasts at him at various points of the film,...

No offense to Kelli Giddish, but the best part of this episode is Annie getting nearly blown up. Not because I dislike her, but because you can’t tease the audience with arguments over how reckless she is without seeing some consequences. Her absence also gives the other cast members, especially the underappreciated Cole Hauser, a chance to take center stage…to some extent.
This episode starts off running, literally, as the team is in pursuit of two different suspects. Jimmy and Luke capture their man, but Annie and Marco’s guy decides to jump onto a boat with Ben Crowley on it. That’s somebody I could have done without seeing again. Annie feels the same way, as she unloads on Marco for not jumping onto the boat. This causes the parents to fight, as Jimmy has issues with Annie’s behavior, and he’s tired of the effect it has on everyone else.

“Tracing Shadow” marks the fourth directorial outing for popular Hong Kong Star Francis Ng, and sees him again co-helming with Marco Mak, who he previously worked with on “Dancing Lion”. The film itself is somewhat of a throwback to the glory days of Hong Kong cinema, being a wacky martial arts comedy that focuses on the search for a legendary treasure. Although essentially pretty daft, it does pack in plenty of action, and boasts an appealing cast that includes Ng himself, along with Jaycee Chan (who recently impressed in Jiang Wen’s excellent “The Sun Also Rises”), and actresses Pace Wu (“Marriage with a Fool”) and Xie Na (“Two Stupid Eggs”). The film begins during the Ming Dynasty with a gang of martial arts masters from different parts of the country all trying to get their hands on a treasure map which apparently points the way to fabulous riches. Directed by Francise Ng and Marco Mak Tracing Shadows is a Kung Fu comedy starring Francis Ng, Jaycee Chan, Dang Hao Han, Pace Wu and Xie Na. The movie is set during the Ming Dynasty and tells the story of the search for an ancient mystic map, which legends believe to lead the way to untold riches and treasures.
