He served Britain during World War I but later defected to the Irish rebels during the Irish War of Independence (1919-21).

(1922) which resulted in the Free State and partition, and was executed
during the Civil War.
His son Erskine Hamilton Childers served as the fourth President of Ireland from June 25, 1973 until his death on November 17, 1974.
