Going into Forsaken with the intent to enjoy yourself is quite easy: with likable real-life father/son pair Kiefer Sutherland and Donald Sutherland playing on-screen family, all set amidst the backdrop of a post-Civil War small western town, the potential for an emotionally-fueled slice of western escapism is palpable. And it should go without saying that the familial chemistry shared between the two leads is Forsaken‘s biggest draw.
They’re easy to watch, the setting is lush (while occasionally incongruous in a studio backlot kind-of-way), and Kiefer has the angsty gunslinger bit nailed down, but Forsaken‘s mind-numbing story derails the movie of all momentum. Its bad guys are bland (save one), its moralistic preachiness is off-putting, and its unadorned direction repeatedly robs potentially captivating scenes of any emotional relevance.
The Sutherlands occasionally manage to cut through that, but it’s far too rare. Here Sutherland the Senior plays William Clayton,...

Read More: The 2015 Indiewire Tiff Bible: All the Reviews, Interviews and News Posted During The Festival The legendary Donald and Kiefer Sutherland are on screen together for the first time in the new clip from "Forsaken." The film looks to be a very old-school Western, complete with ten gallon hats and swinging saloon doors that stylistically pay homage to the classics. The clip features Donald as Reverend William Clayton, father to Kiefer's John Henry, who returns home after apparently making quite a legend of himself as a gunslinger. Based on the cold reception he receives as he makes his way around town on an errand for the Reverend, it looks like not everyone in town is a fan of John Henry. The film's official Tiff synopsis reads: "Kiefer and Donald Sutherland share the screen in this brooding Western about an embittered gunslinger who attempts to make amends with his estranged...

Despite the seismic critical and commercial failure of Disney's John Carter, Hollywood hasn't been deterred from diving back into the Edgar Rice Burroughs literary archives for feature film material. Tarzan, an animated adventure arriving ahead of Warner Bros's Alexander Skarsgård-led blockbuster, will hope to fare better than the Mars-marooned Civil War veteran did in 2012.
Heroes are in vogue on the big screen right now, whether they're clad in superhero spandex or a loincloth - and Tarzan certainly has a sturdier cinematic history than John Carter, even if he did have to suffer through Phil Collins's caterwauling.
Fortunately this German-produced take on the story doesn't have the ex-Genesis man to contend with, but it does suffer from a thrifty corner-cutting...

It’s an annual tradition for The Simpsons to air its Halloween themed episode “Tree House of Horror” and this year will have a little Dexter mixed in. In case you’re not familiar with these episodes, they’re split in to three separate segments, usually a parody of a popular horror, science fiction or fantasy film. Since it’s Halloween, the violence is stepped up a notch and has no ties to regular continuity.
“Treehouse of Horror Xxii” is airing as part of the 23rd season. One of the segments will be a parody of Showtime’s Dexter. You can see a clip of the episode over at EW. It features Ned Flanders in the role of Dexter in a version of Dexter’s opening credits. In keeping with the character, Flanders believes he’s been sent on a mission from God to kill the townspeople of Springfield. On a personal level,...
