- Arm was so damaged from the plane crash that doctors recommended amputation. However his father stopped the procedure right before it started, and he recovered to play guitar again.
- Allen was paralyzed as the result of a 1986 car accident.

- He was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Lynyrd Skynyrd in 2006.
