Every week there are large numbers of indie and specialty releases vying for attention. It’s impossible to do them all, so when the option of reviewing Nowhere Special was placed in front of me I resisted at first after discovering it actually premiered at the 2020 Venice Film Festival. That’s right, four years ago. I had to wonder what could possibly be good about a film delayed for that long in terms of getting a U.S. release date? Finally caving in to the persistent requests by the distributor and its passionate PR team, I decided to check it out.
What I discovered was not that this was some sort of troubled film, not even close. Instead I found a spare but moving drama, powered by a remarkable lead performance, that is all about life and death and all things in between. At its heart it is also an...

The easy step from bigotry and ideological entrenchments to outright madness gets a timely depiction in David Ireland’s Cyprus Avenue at Off Broadway’s Public Theater. Timelier, perhaps, than Ireland or his star Stephen Rea (The Crying Game) could ever have imagined.
Be warned: A child – an infant, in fact – will pay the price for adult madness, and though the Belfast-set drama takes place nowhere near America’s southern border, recent headlines of youngsters caged, literally, in fights not of their making resonate throughout Ireland’s dark allegorical drama.
Cyprus Avenue, directed by Vicky Featherstone and a co-production of the Abbey Theatre and The Royal Court Theater, begins before we, the audience, have a chance to adjust our boundaries, which most certainly is the point. On a lovely, intentionally bland off-white set with a few sticks of the attractive but not overly comfortable furniture of a psychiatrist’s office,...

’90210′ returns tonight with a bang (literally) and Arielle promises everything will change for Liam, Annie and Vanessa.
90210 fans have suffered a long, joyless hiatus since Dec. 2012 — mostly Liam (Matt Lanter), who’s been tied up in Ashley’s basement this whole time — but the CW sudser is finally back Jan. 21 at 9 p.m., and it’s going to be a big episode for “best frenemies” Annie (Shenae Grimes) and Vanessa (Arielle Kebbel). “Vanessa finally gets her day in court,” Arielle tells HollywoodLife.com. “The episode shows some of the redeeming qualities that I’ve known she’s had all along.”
But fans aren’t the only ones who might warm up to Vanessa after tonight’s episode; it sounds like Annie will be having a change of heart, as well.
“By being forced to work together, they learn just enough about one another to know there’s more than meets the eye,...
