- He taught at and directed the American Opera Center at Juilliard.
- Directed the 1953 off-Broadway revival of Percy MacKaye's "The Scarecrow".
- He attended the Yale School of Drama and directed a production of Sartre's "No Exit" in 1947 while still a student there. In 1950 he joined the Actors Studio, and for a while pursued acting. He had small roles in several Broadway productions in the early 1950s as well as a few TV appearances.
- He believed that opera singers should also be good actors, and incorporated film and other multimedia into his opera productions, sometimes arousing controversy.
