Woe betide anyone who stumbles across the Harley Quinn Valentine’s Day Special without any prior knowledge of the animated TV series, because it’s safe to say they’d be in for something of a shock. Created by DC animation veterans Paul Dini and Bruce Timm, and written and exec-produced by Justin Halpern, Patrick Schumacker and Dean Lorey, the show specialises in a raunchy, adult-themed and decidedly sweary take on the familiar DC Comics characters, and the Valentine’s Special pushes those limits to even further extremes.

What does Harley Quinn love about Valentine’s Day? It’s the only day when there’s a built-in excuse for doing cheesy sh*t for your partner. (Her words – not mine!) HBO’s critically acclaimed adult animated comedy Harley Quinn will air a special love-themed episode in honor of the most romantic day of the year, according to candy companies and greeting card sales. Harley Quinn: A Very Problematic Valentine’s Day Special will stream a few days prior to the holiday it’s celebrating, premiering on HBO Max on Thursday, February 9, 2023.
The streaming service offered this description of the special:

Kaley Cuoco leads the voice cast as the titular character.

Exclusive: New Line is scratching at a start date on Hello Kitty. The studio, which set the rights to make a film based on the global brand in 2019, has set Jennifer Coyle and Leo Matsuda to direct what will be an animated/live-action hybrid effort.
Plot details surrounding the trendsetting Japanese pop icon are under wraps, but the intention is for it to be catnip for the global consumer audience. Known Universe’s Lindsey Beer wrote the script.
Beau Flynn and his FlynnPictureCo. will produce the film and pursued the Hello Kitty rights for over five years with New Line Cinema/Warner Bros. The film will mark the first time a studio has ever brought Hello Kitty to the big screen. Chanel Bowling will oversee the project for FlynnPictureCo. Known Universe is executive producer and New Line executives Richard Brener, Celia Khong and Paulina Sussman will oversee for the studio.

Some pretty iconic comic book characters originated far away from the comic book page. Superman’s pal Jimmy Olsen and his editor Perry White both first appeared in the Adventures of Superman radio show. Wolverine’s clone/adopted daughter X-23 debuted as part of the X-Men: Evolution cartoon series. Phil Coulson became such a ubiquitous part of the early Marvel films (and then the lead on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) that he’s now similarly ingrained in the Marvel comic book universe.

DC Universe’s adult animated series Harley Quinn will show different sides to some of DC’s costumed characters as well as Gotham City itself.
“We do have our own rules on the show,” executive producer Patrick Schumacker said Tuesday at Day 1 of the TCA summer press tour. “From the get-go, the pitch was this show is from Harley’s perspective. So, on one hand, Gotham is going to be a lot brighter and more technicolor because this is through her eyes. Also, the way that we portray the heroes, who are usually lionized in the films, we can have fun with them. Like Batman is a real buzz kill and Superman tells dad jokes.”
Schumacker was joined on the DC Universe panel by Ep Kaley Cuoco, who voices the title role, Lake Bell (Poison Ivy), Alan Tudyk (Joker & Clayface), Diedrich Bader (Batman), Jb Smoove (Frank the Plant), executive producer...

Maddy has been pretty vocal this year about how she is with DC, though even more than Rebirth, Batgirl and Birds of Prey, we are both obsessed with DC Super Hero Girls. Yes, it is aimed for girls 6 -12, but we dare anyone to not love this. Start with the video shorts and eventually move onto the books and toy. And now there’s a new movie.
DC Super Hero Girls: Hero of the Year premiered at Comc-Con, but just this week it’s been released on DVD and we already know it will be running non-stop on every little kid’s minivan TV. Apparently there’s so much action boys like it too. Why oh why was this not a thing when we were kids?
