- James grew up with a love of Shakespeare.
- He is distantly related to Ian Fleming, the writer of James Bond. James's grandmother was Ian Fleming's second cousin.
- He also writes poetry and has released three books entitled "The Leaves Of Autumn", "In The Dead Of Winter", "The Birth Of Spring".
- At one stage of his life James travelled to America to train to teach a form of meditation called the Ishaya's Ascension. He took vows as a novitiate monk and was given the Sanskrit name Jivana, which has a few meanings, such as 'The Enlivener Of All Beings', 'The Vivifier', 'The Life Giving Sun'. He never finished his training however, deciding instead go home to New Zealand and pursue acting.
- James has English, Scottish, Lebanese and Maori blood. He is directly descended from one of the mayors of Aberdeen, John Fleming and is also a direct descendant of William Denny who built the ships that brought early settlers to New Zealand from England. One of the ships they built was the famous Cutty Sark.
