Sunderland have not beaten Manchester United since they last met in the League Cup over 13 years ago. Kevin Phillips’s extra time penalty took the Black Cats into quarter-finals in November 2000 with Red Devils goalscorer Dwight Yorke being sent off.
United have since won 16 of the 20 subsequent encounters that have all come in the Premier League and the other four were drawn. The Black Cats will have home advantage first in this two-legged tie with the winners to face either West Ham United or Manchester City at Wembley.
Gus Poyet has had defensive injuries worrying him, but despite Sunderland’s struggle in the league they remain in both domestic cup competitions. The basement club of the English top flight will be targeting an upset in this first leg similar to their shock win over City in November.

Sunderland Head Coach Gus Poyet is hoping that the team’s recent run can cause some momentum and finally lift them off the bottom of the table to kick start the New Year, and on top of that, sign bigger name players on the back of it. He told The Sunderland Echo:
“We have had a five-game unbeaten run and if we get a good result against Aston Villa we might be talking about getting past one or two clubs at the bottom of the table.
“That would make us more attractive to potential signings we are hoping to attract.

Sunderland have won on their last two visits to Cardiff City, but face the Bluebirds for the first time since they left Ninian Park. The Black Cats will start in the Welsh capital bottom of the Premier League despite a four-match unbeaten run in all competitions.
Gus Poyet’s side followed up two goalless draws and knocking Chelsea out of the Capital One Cup with a win over ten-man Everton on Boxing Day. If two teams from fellow strugglers Crystal Palace, Fulham and West Ham win earlier on Saturday, managerless Cardiff could also kickoff in the relegation zone.
Malky Mackay was offered the festive olive branch of keeping his job as Bluebirds boss for “the foreseeable future”, but club owner Vincent Tan snapped it on Friday after heavy defeats at Liverpool and home to Southampton either side of Christmas.

This is the worst possible time for Manchester City to be playing host to Sunderland. Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill is planning a raid on recently relegated Blackburn Rovers by attempting to capture the much sought after free agent Junior Hoilett and the talented midfielder Steven N’Zonzi.
O’Neill has already begun making his mark on the Sunderland team he inherited from Steve Bruce in December with the signing of his former Aston Villa defender Carlos Cuellar on a free transfer. However with the transfer budget boost from the sale of wayward forward Asamoah Gyan, O’Neill seems eager to build on his already talented squad.
With the departure of Gyan and the return of Nicklas Bendtner to Arsenal following his loan spell, Sunderland are in desperate need to bolster their attack. It would seem that explosive forward Junior Hoilett is high on O’Neill’s wish list and with the player out of contract only a minimal compensation fee (to be set by a tribunal) would be required.

As first reported by WhatCulture back at the start of May, former Aston Villa centre-half Carlos Cuellar has joined former manager Martin O’Neill at Sunderland to bolster the team’s defensive line.
O’Neill has snapped up the 30-year-old Spaniard, who was a free agent after his contract at Aston Villa expired at the weekend, on a two-year deal. He had previously played for Rangers, winning both the Spl and Scottish Football Writers’ Player of the Year awards during an impressive season in Scotland and joined Villa for almost £8m in 2008 when O’Neill was in charge of the midlands club, making 123 appearances.
Madrid-born Cuellar spent time with both Calahorra and Numancia before joining Osasuna in 2003, and helping them to the final of the Copa del Rey and qualification for the Champions’ League as well as the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup.

Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill is eyeing up a swoop for Newcastle United midfielder Danny Guthrie, who is out of contract in June.
The former Liverpool player, who has appeared 81 times for the Magpies since his joining the club in 2008, is said to be settled in the North-East and keen to remain in the area. He has scored 7 times for United, though has recently found himself switched to a more defensive role while filling in for Cheik Tiote in the Newcastle midfield.
Sources within the Stadium of Light have told WhatCulture O’Neill is keen to bring the ball-playing midfielder to the club, with on-going uncertainty regards Craig Gardner who considers his future to be at a midlands based club.
While Guthrie would welcome a move within the region, it is likely he would be concious of the ramifications that a move to Newcastle’s bitter rivals, Sunderland, would have.

Emile Heskey will leave Aston Villa on a free this summer after being told he won’t be offered an extension to his three-and-a-half year deal that expires next month.
What Culture has heard that Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill has been monitoring the situation and will make a swift move for his former player to bolster his faltering front line at the Stadium of Light.
Additionally, O’Neill is also expected to make a move for Spanish defender Carlos Cuellar whose four-year contract at Villa also expires this summer.
O’Neill was manager of Leicester City when he originally brought Heskey up from the club’s academy into the first team where he became an accomplished Premier League striker. In the 90′s, O’Neill said Heskey was the player who almost single-handedly kept Leicester in the Premier League for so long, and was the club’s most fruitful time...

A cold day at Villa Park was in no way warmed by the football on show. Manchester City claimed the all important three points against Aston Villa thanks to a goal from Joleon Lescott, but it was ultimately a game that will be best forgotten by players and fans alike. An important win regardless though as it puts the Sky Blues back at the top of table. A terrible performance by the hosts though – they need to improve considerably and fast too if they want to stay clear from the drop zone.
Hardly a ‘must watch’ game by anyone’s standards – Manchester City haven’t looked as irresistible as they did in the first half of the season since, well, the first half of the season. That’s not to say Roberto Mancini’s men have been bad though, and City fans would undoubtedly be spurred on by the comfortable...

Team news ahead of Arsenal’s Fa Cup Fourth Round match against Aston Villa at the Emirates.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger will assess Thierry Henry with a late fitness test to see if he can take part. He is struggling to shake off a knock, and similarly Mikel Arteta and defender Bacary Sagna are late concerns. Midfielder Jack Wilshere though has definitely been ruled out after suffering a setback in his recovery from ankle injury.
There is better news for Arsenal in the form of defender Francis Coquelin being back in contention after hamstring problem and that Kieran Gibbs should return to full training next week after his groin injury.
Meanwhile Carl Jenkinson (back), Abou Diaby (hamstring) and Andre Santos (ankle) all miss out with long term problems and strikers Gervinho and Marouane Chamakh are away on African Cup of Nations duty.
For Villa, on-loan forward and ex Spurs star...

(P.S. – I am a Newcastle United fan, so as always my match previews are bias);
After an impressive start to the season, Newcastle United visit the midlands with a trip to Villa Park this afternoon for what was once a happy hunting ground, but in recent years has been one that has only held misery and pain! This was the ground in 2004 when Bobby Robson lost his job after a 2-1 defeat on the backs of a bad start to the campaign, and since 2006 it’s been a run of four straight defeats with only one goal scored in return – including a day few Geordies will forget when Alan Shearer’s defeated 11 went crashing out of the Premier League with a whimper and without a prayer.
And going in today’s 3pm kick-off, few would predict them to actually score today. Not only are they going up against a...
