When attending a UK film festival, you inevitably run into films that display some very tired clichés about the British Working Class. As the latest word from director Janis Pugh, Chuck Chuck Baby deserves to put them all to shame as a film scripted entirely from tired tropes and ideas. As though she asked ChatGPT to write a queer romance after feeding it ten years’ worth of The Sun.
So, we have a film that bizarrely tries to mix musical theatre and social realism, telling the story of Helen (Louise Brealey) an utterly downtrodden factory worker, relegated to the status of handmaiden by her gammon-faced ex-husband Gary (Celyn Jones). Lodging in Gary’s spare room to care for his ailing mother Gwen (Sorcha Cusack), Helen’s been rendered all but invisible by the spectre of his new baby with a younger woman. Which is great for thematic resonance but terrible for building a compelling protagonist.

Helen (Louise Brealey) wakes in a bright, all-pink room, but the reality of her life is nothing like the whimsical room she's awoken in. She lives with her ex-husband Gary (Celyn Jones) and his girlfriend Amy (Emily Fairn in a hilarious performance evoking "Little Britain"). She's not moved out as she has a strong connection to Gary's mother Gwen (Sorcha Cusack), who she cares for when not working night shifts at the local chicken plant. Leaving is all too tempting -- in the opening scene, she takes a suitcase out from under her bed but doesn't go through with packing. Her friends at the plant, Lynn (Emily Aston), Clare (Cat Simmons), and Paula (Beverly Rudd) try and get her to open up, but she seems resigned to the predictable monotony of her life in a small Welsh town.
That all changes when Joanne (Annabel Scholey) re-appears in their quiet town after years away.

Louise Brealey is put-upon Helen, a chicken factory worker who gets a second chance at love, in Janis Pugh’s generous and gritty film
Here’s a rousing empowerment-anthem of a movie that’s not afraid to paint its romance plotline in big, bold brushstrokes; occasionally it overdoes things but the rush of emotion carries everything along in its path, helped by the deployment of radio-friendly standards by Neil Diamond and the like that turns the film into an impromptu musical and allows writer-director Janis Pugh to stage (relatively) elaborate dance sequences and big emotional scenes.
The central figure is put-upon chicken-processing factory worker Helen (played by Louise Brealey) who has a complicated domestic situation: she lives in the same crummy terrace as her oafish husband Gary, from whom she is separated but seemingly not actually divorced, and shares the place with his new, much younger, girlfriend Amy (Emily Fairn) and their newly arrived baby.

Why do we find murder mysteries so uniquely relaxing? This is one of the age-old questions about human nature, up there with ‘what is consciousness?’ and ‘why do we keep eating mouldy cheese and fish eggs like it’s a good thing?’ Because, despite the grief and blood and mountains of paperwork that a gruesome murder causes, we simply can’t get enough of curling up on the sofa with a mug of tea and a cosy crime drama to keep us blissfully entertained all the way through to bedtime.
This isn’t a new thing, either: while modern series like Death in Paradise and Shakespeare and Hathaway are the current champions of cosy crime TV, back in the eighties and nineties classics like Murder She Wrote and Hetty Wainthropp Investigates taught us how it’s done. So whether you’re after the latest in the cosy crime genre or some more nostalgic viewing,...

The absence of three characters from Father Brown has been explained by one of the show’s stars.
On Friday (6 January), the crime drama centred on Mark Williams’ crime-solving priest will return to BBC One for its 10th series.
A few months ago, a publicity shot from the new batch of episodes was released, showing Williams alongside several cast members, including John Burton, John Light and Nancy Carroll.
However, fans noticed that three people were missing: Emer Kenny, who played Bunty Windermere, Sorcha Cusack, who played Bridgette McCarthy, and Inspector Mallory actor Jack Deam.
Cusack has appeared on the show since it began in 2013, while Deam joined in 2016. Kenny jumped on board a year later.
Burton, who plays Sergeant Goodfellow, addressed their absence in a tweet, writing: “I’ve had lots (and I mean lots) of messages about the new publicity shot which shows certain characters missing from it, and...

There’s a great balancing act going on throughout “This Way Up.” The first season of the comedy series, originally broadcast on Channel 4 and now available in its entirety on Hulu, is the latest in a growing number of shows that make the most of their small windows into the lives of their characters by showing that life doesn’t fit neatly into categories.

Hulu has boarded Aisling Bea comedy This Way Up as The Daily Show’s Aasif Mandvi, The Crown’s Tobias Menzies and Game of Thrones’ Indira Varma join the Sharon Horgan-exec produced series.

★★★☆☆ Even regular films by the Children's Film Foundation are known for a slightly 'detached' quality. As a result those with intentional fantastical themes were positively bizarre. The Monster of Highgate Ponds (1961), The Boy Who Turned Yellow (1972) and A Hitch in Time (1978), which have been remastered and released on DVD by the BFI under the collective name Weird Adventures, are three such titles. Starring such British stalwarts as Patrick Troughton and Sorcha Cusack, and produced by amongst others Alberto Cavalcanti, Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, these films encapsulate an era of British frivolity.
Here are three stories as enchanting as they are downright odd. Featuring a dragon-like monster from Malaysia who causes excitement amongst local inhabitants when he takes up residence in the ponds on Hampstead Heath, a boy who turns yellow when he meets an alien who can travel through the electrical grid system, and a nutty professor who uses...

Lo and behold, the end is truly approaching. If ever there were a time for the doom-laden nature of the fifth and final season of Merlin to reach its crux, the tenth instalment- The Kindness Of Strangers- is it, and thankfully the writers of the show make good on their promises to keep things dark and foreboding. Here, we have ominous hints at what’s to come for everyone’s favourite warlock, the Once and Future King and of course the druid Knight who can by no means be trusted. Was it another ground-breaking step forward as The Disir was a few weeks back? No, but there were still a few worthwhile surprises.
One thing’s for sure- right from the off, the culmination of the ‘Puppet Queen’ arc allowed for a stronger and more cohesive narrative. We moved back to the central arc of this season,...
