- Created a lot of controversy in 1992 with the song "Rodney K"; in the song, Rodney King is killed, after the song ends. Willie D stated that the song was directed at African Americans that would 'sell-out' and assimiliate with the dominant majority. Willie D recorded and released another controversial rap song "Coon" in March 2016 where he has stated in interviews that a 'Coon' is usually an African American who sell out their own race for acceptance with another race (he has defined a 'Coon' as (1) if ones criticism of a community outweighs your contribution to a community, (2) reinforcement of negative stereotypes, especially as a means to regurgitate White Supremacy rhetoric, (3) blaming one's oppression in their own community and giving the oppressor a pass, and (4) a person of color who is selling out for financial gain and gaining acceptance outside their race and/or ethnicity) - in the song he attacked former NBA basketball player Charles Barkley where he sided with the grand jury decision not to indict Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson for the shooting of Michael Brown, Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke (who is African American and made a statement on CNN where he stated that 'there is no police brutality in America which was ended in the 1960s' and called President Barack Obama a nightmare in the White House), and actress Stacey Dash (who has made rancid comments against the BET (Black Entertainment Television) network claiming that BET has kept racism and segregation alive - she went on FOX News back in February 2016 in the wake of the Oscars boycott where several prominent African Americans consider her a race traitor). Willie D released a sequel 'Coon 2' which he named Michael Jordan, presidential candidate Ben Carson, Steve Harvey, and U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (who is Cuban American) - both music videos for 'Coon' and 'Coon 2' were later blocked by social media giant Facebook where Willie D did have his Facebook account suspended where both rap songs incited violence and/or promoted hate speech (the suspension of Facebook accounts of African Americans for posting about racial injustice and/or African American issues e.g. the Black Lives Matter movement, systemic racism is a double standard where one post for foul language stays up but Black-centric issues are subjected to censorship).
- In 1984, Willie and Ronald Hope, his childhood friend, robbed a Texaco gas station, and both men were convicted of aggravated robbery in 1985. Willie was sentenced to six months in the Harris County Jail, and after the jail sentence, Willie turned his life around after James A. Prince decided to sign another solo artist for Rap-A-Lot Records. During the 2010s, it was revealed that Willie D joined the Geto Boys as a favor to James Prince where one of the original members (Prince Johnny C) was married at the time in late 1988 after the release of the album Making Trouble and Willie joined as a replacement for Prince Johnny C. When he joined the Geto Boys (spelled Ghetto Boys until 1990), he wrote the lyrics to the rap song Do It Like A G.O. which was featured on Willie's debut album, Controversy that would open a few doors for other Southern hip-hop artists, as well as ushering in the second incarnation of the Geto Boys - at this point in time Bushwick Bill joined the group (originally he was a dancer and hype man), and rapper Scarface (who went by the stage name DJ Akshen prior to 1990, who was released from a psychiatric ward who lived with manic depression besides a high school dropout who was attending Willowridge High School in late 1987). In real life, Willie D did return back to North Forest High School after his jail sentence but was expelled prior to graduation for fighting.
- Used to have a radio talk show called "Reality Check", which aired from late 1995 to October 1997. Since the mid-2000s, he is a contributor to a column (Ask Willie D) with the Houston Press.
- Supported community activist/radio talk show host Ada J. Edwards for her candidacy for Houston City Council District D (2001). Ada Edwards' victory was the second time that a progressive candidate has been elected to the Houston City Council.
