He was awarded the C.B.E. (Commander of the British Empire) in 1992.
He was appointed CBE in 1992 and knighted in 1999.
Music director and principal conductor of the Lyric Opera of Chicago, he is parents with Gianna of composer Ed Frazier Davis.
He was knighted in 1999.
He was one of the longest-serving conductors of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and a frequent participant in the BBC Proms concerts in London.
He attended the Royal College of Music and King's College, Cambridge, where he was an organ scholar before taking up conducting.
