Luke Combs is the man of the hour. The 59th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards nominations were announced on Tuesday morning, April 9, and Combs came out on top with eight bids, including Entertainer of the Year. Check out the complete list of nominations here.
This is Combs’s fifth nomination in a row for Entertainer of the Year, an award he has yet to win. This year he’s up against Kane Brown, Jelly Roll, Cody Johnson, Chris Stapleton, Morgan Wallen and lone female nominee Lainey Wilson. Women are consistently underrepresented in Entertainer of the Year, though Carrie Underwood won in 2020 (in a tie with Thomas Rhett) and Miranda Lambert finally prevailed in 2022. But we mustn’t underestimate Wilson here. She pulled off a huge upset at the CMA Awards last fall, claiming Entertainer of the Year despite being relatively new on the scene.

“Fast Car” continues to drive Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman to the top — this time, at the 2024 Academy of Country Music Awards.
Combs is the top contender this year with eight nominations, competing for entertainer of the year as well as single and song of the year with “Fast Car.” He shares the latter nomination with Chapman, who wrote the song alone and had major success with it in 1988, 35 years before Combs brought new life to the track and made it a country hit.
Chapman won in the same category at last year’s Country Music Association Awards, becoming the first Black person to do so. She and Combs earned praise for teaming up for a live performance of the song at February’s Grammy Awards, where Combs was nominated for his version of the song; Chapman won two Grammys for her original version.

Toby Keith, whose history with the CMT Music Awards goes back to having co-hosted the earliest incarnation of the show, will get his due in the wake of his recent death, as an all-star salute is planned for Keith on Sunday night’s three-hour CBS telecast.
The tribute will feature performances by one of the hottest figures in country music, Lainey Wilson, along with his fellow industry veterans Brooks & Dunn, whose Ronnie Dunn is a fellow Okie. Rocker Sammy Hagar, who featured Keith on an episode of his TV series “Rock & Roll Road Trip” in 2022, will join the lineup paying homage.
Set for what’s being billed as special appearances saluting the late singer are Lukas Nelson and Roger Clemens. Nelson’s father, Willie, had a smash duet with Keith, “Beer for My Horses.” Baseball legend Roger Clemens’ friendship with Keith included the singer inducting the ballplayer into the Houston Sports Hall of Fame.

Luke Combs‘s “Fast Car” has been one of the biggest hits of the year, country or otherwise. So it’s no surprise that it’s the heavy favorite to win the Country Music Association Award for Single of the Year. But what about Song of the Year? The CMAs nominated it for their writing prize even though it’s a cover of a Tracy Chapman song that’s 35 years old. Can it travel through time to win that award as well?
According to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, “Fast Car” is way ahead in the Single of the Year race, getting leading odds of 11/2. Among those backing it for the win are nine out of 10 Gold Derby Editors, 15 of our Top 24 Users and 16 of our All-Star Top 24.
