- As of 2024, is one of only two African-American women (the other being Dee Rees for Mudbound (2017)) to be nominated for a screenplay Oscar. Also, the only African-American woman to be nominated for Best Original Screenplay, for Lady Sings the Blues (1972).

- Took possession of Mowtown Productions when Berry Gordy sold it in the 1980s. In the 1990s, she changed the company's name to De Passe Productions.
