Ensign Ro Laren (Michelle Forbes) first appeared in the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Ensign Ro", and she introduced an interesting character dynamic to the series. Whereas most of the characters on "Next Generation" were wholly devoted to Starfleet principals and unwaveringly loyal to Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart), Ensign Ro felt that Starfleet frequently let suffering go unacknowledged. She was combative and disobedient as a result, often openly defying her captain and responding to diplomatic solutions with belligerence.
Forbes' performance was so assured and defiant, however, that Ro's disobedience never felt impulsive or immature. Her reactions were organic and principled, revealing a hardened but understandable heart. Ro only appeared in eight episodes of "Next Generation," but she was always welcome to shake up the system and offer metaphorical headbutts to her commanding officers.

The showrunner of the third season of "Star Trek: Picard," Terry Matalas, began the season with a few cute references and cameos to whet the appetites of nostalgia-hungry Trekkies. One of the first shots of the season was a slow pan over the belongings of Dr. Crusher (Gates McFadden), and sharp-eyed fans would likely recognize several trinkets and pictures and audio logs left over from "Star Trek: The Next Generation." For five episodes, Matalas played light and fair with additional nostalgic references, focusing instead on new characters, a new ship, and the story at hand.
In the back half of the season, however, the dam burst, and the cameos and references began coming fast and furious. There were small notable roles for Ro Laren (Michelle Forbes), Tuvok (Tim Russ), and Commander Shelby (Elizabeth Dennehy). The eighth episode saw the entire central cast of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" in the...

Warning: This article contains spoilers for the latest episode of "Star Trek: Picard."
Unless you've been living in a derelict Borg cube hopelessly severed from the Collective, you've probably noticed that this season of "Star Trek: Picard" has doubled down on "The Next Generation" to whole new levels of nostalgia. For some, that's exactly what they've been waiting for from this series ever since it was first announced. For others, well, just check out /Film's recap by Witney Seibold of the very last episode, titled "Vox," for the other end of the spectrum of reactions.
But for showrunner Terry Matalas, this third and final season has provided the best excuse to go out on a high note, smashing together various eras of "Trek" history to give Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), Will Riker (Jonathan Frakes), Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden), and the rest of our original heroes one last grand adventure. Warning: this post will contain spoilers about the third season of "Star Trek: Picard."
When the third season of "Star Trek: Picard" was first announced, it sold itself as a nostalgia party. Previously, of the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" cast, only Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, and Brent Spiner had appeared, and the four never had a scene together. The third season was constructed specifically to gather those four, add Michael Dorn, Gates McFadden, and LeVar Burton to the mix, and get them all in the same room. Refreshingly, the showrunners of "Picard" held said event for the end of the season's eighth episode, allowing each character to be introduced organically. By the time everyone was gathered, the moment of nostalgic reunion felt earned ... if not corny. Additionally, other legacy characters like Ro Laren (Michelle Forbes), Tuvok (Tim Russ), and Commander Shelby (Elizabeth Dennehy) would appear from time to time.

Troi assures Jack he is not alone as she approaches the door. She opens it, discovers who is calling out to Jack, and runs to immediately see Beverly and Picard, Jack’s parents.

We salute some of the finest guest stars of Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Some episodes of television are elevated by the performance of the regular actors, and with a star of the calibre of Patrick Stewart, Star Trek: The Next Generation is not short of such episodes. Equally important, however, are the performances of guest actors brought in for a one-off appearance who elevate any scenes in which they take part and work with the regular actors to create something really memorable. James' Star Trek Tng season 3 look-backs conclude with a justifiable classic: Best Of Both Worlds...
This review contains spoilers.
3.26 Best Of Both Worlds
The Enterprise arrives at Jouret IV to respond to a distress call. Unfortunately, once they arrive, they find that there's a smouldering crater where the colony used to be. Has O'Brien made another mistake with the co-ordinates, they wonder? But no, to their astonishment, he was correct. The colony Is gone. And Starfleet thinks the Borg is responsible.
With this in mind, Starfleet dispatches chief desk-jockey Admiral Hanson and Borg tactical specialist Lieutenant Commander Shelby to the Enterprise. Apparently it's been her job to figure out ways to defeat the inevitable Borg attack (she's presumably well-positioned to do so having never seen a Borg, much less fought one. This might explain why they later admit all their Borg super-weapons are 18 months from being finished.)
Shelby and Riker are dismissed,...

With Star Trek into Darkness looming only a couple weeks away, Paramount is unleashing a load of Star Trek discs onto the market. Some of them – like all of the films – have seen high definition before with previous Blu-ray releases. However, the more impressive assortment of choices come from the newly remastered television series. Season Three of Star Trek: The Next Generation is the latest year to get that treatment. However, that season ends in one of the biggest cliffhangers in television history, and that can be frustrating. To offset any ill will, the two-part season finale and season premiere “The Best of Both Worlds” is also available packaged as a single movie. The remastered version of these two episodes also comes with a commentary track, giving some insight into one of the most popular episodes of the series. “The Best of Both Worlds” is a strong piece of television drama and was a defining moment for Star Trek: The Next Generation. The spinoff of Star Trek had been a ratings bonanza for Paramount Pictures, which syndicated the show and reaped huge profits. The fans, though, were slow to warm to the show and its characters, thanks to incredible infighting that sapped the inaugural season of coherence and left it to season two to show the series’ real potential. Season three, which is also out this week on Blu-ray, came to life thanks to a solidified writing staff under Michael Piller’s tutelage and the actors finally getting comfortable with their roles.
After eschewing two-parters, producer Rick Berman allowed Piller to end the season with a cliffhanger and as has been chronicled repeatedly, Piller wrote the first part thinking he was leaving the show. The resolution would be someone else’s headache.

Rielle Hunter, the 44-year-old campaign aide with whom former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards has admitted to having an affair, seems to have had as many personal transformations as she's had names. Hunter went from a New York City party girl to an aspiring actress in Los Angeles to a New-Age spiritualist and then, finally, to a political operative. Pigeon O'Brien, a music publicist who's known Hunter for 20 years, says she's most puzzled by Hunter's latest role. O'Brien was especially disturbed by negative comments Hunter made about Elizabeth Edwards in a recent Newsweek story. "The person I'm seeing now confuses me,...
