Screen Producers Australia (Spa) and the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance (Meaa) have released updated screen industry safety guidelines for the first time in nearly 20 years.
Delivered with the support of the state screen agencies, the National Guidelines for Screen Safety are directed at productions of all levels and will be subject to ongoing consultation, review, and updates.
The Meaa and Spa have been working on the guidelines for the past three years, during which they have consulted with different sections of the industry.
The live document features information on relatively new protocols, including links to the industry-led Covid-19-Safe Guidelines and the Meaa Intimacy Guidelines for Stage and Screen, both of which were released last year.

Promising ideas turn out to be mostly empty thought bubbles in “Rising Wolf,” a confusing and derivative Aussie combo of hostage thriller and sci-fi fantasy. Centered on a terrified young woman trapped in a Shanghai skyscraper elevator by a nasty Russian villain, this muddled attempt at an elevated genre film involving time travel, psychic powers and environmental doom can’t be rescued by strong visuals or a fine central performance by Charlotte Best. When Fti was consolidated into Screenwest back in 2017, the annual Wa Screen Awards disappeared with it.
However, Revelation Perth International Film Festival director Richard Sowada has sought to bring them back, giving the state’s industry an awards platform for the first time in nearly five years.
Newly dubbed the Western Australian Screen Culture Awards, the event will bookend Revelation in mid-December.
Sowada has somewhat reimagined the honours, with a focus on innovation and achievement. Categories span all screen genres, from shorts, features and docos, through to VR/Ar, games, moving image art and installation.
The aim is to recognise the extraordinary growth and current vibracy of the Western Australian industry; Sowada posits that when he started Revelation back in 1997, Wa produced a feature film every three years.

Hotel Mumbai received the accolade for best feature film production design at the 2019 Australian Production Design Guild Awards held at Melba Spiegeltent, Collingwood, on Sunday night.

Best plays a young woman, Aria Wolf, who is trapped and kidnapped in the elevator of a super high-rise building at the mercy of tormentors in the Russian Intelligence Agency. The film is intended as the first of a trilogy, in which Aria and fraternal twin sister Zara discover their true powers, which are the result of an incident when they were seven years old.
This is Furlong’s debut feature, and he has penned the script with Kieron Holland, with James M. Vernon and Kristy Vernon producing. The production has been financed by a single private investor, and the producers are currently in discussion with various distributors internationally.
