Erika Dilday will join American Documentary, Inc. as executive director.
Dilday, who succeeds Justine Nagain, will be the company’s first Black executive director. The AmDoc board of director announced on Tuesday that Dilday will begin her duties as executive director in May.
As executive director Dilday will oversee all aspects of AmDocs programs and operations, including production and programming, community engagement and education, digital strategy, development, business affairs, communications and overall management of the Pov series on PBS. She will also serve as executive producer of America ReFramed, the company’s year-round showcase of independent documentaries featuring contemporary American stories that airs on the World Channel.

Exclusive: Justine Nagan is stepping down as the executive director of American Documentary, Inc. She will leave the company in spring 2021. A search is underway for her replacement.
Nagan, an Emmy- and Peabody-winning producer, joined AmDoc as executive director in 2015 and has served as an executive producer for PBS’ Pov, the longest-running independent documentary series on television, and America ReFramed (with World Channel in partnership with Wgbh). She oversaw the premieres of nearly 100 projects including Pov’s first episodic co-production, the docuseries And She Could Be Next, directed by Grace Lee and Marjan Safinia and executive produced by Ava DuVernay; and Minding the Gap, directed by Bing Liu and produced by Diane Quon. Nagan also launched Pov Shorts in 2018, one of the first PBS series dedicated to short-form documentaries.
With Nagan at the helm, AmDoc added to its collection of Peabody Awards; News & Documentary Emmys, including Best Documentary; and Oscar nominations.

Less than a week after HBO yanked Oliver Stone's documentary on Fidel Castro, PBS said it's tackling the life of the controversial Cuban dictator. WGBH Boston has started production on a two-hour political biography of Castro, who has led Cuba since 1959, for the PBS American Experience series. Producer Adriana Bosch plans to interview Cuban public officials, former political prisoners and Castro friends and family members as well as world leaders. Bosch is an experienced documentarian whose American Experience biography on Ronald Reagan won a George Foster Peabody Award. The Castro documentary is slated to air next year. "There is a need for an objective, well-researched documentary on Castro," Margaret Drain, executive producer of American Experience, said in a statement. "For nearly 50 years, he has commanded our attention ... yet he is unknown to most of us. Current events in Cuba make this film particularly relevant."...
