The expert in question in “The Maestro” is famed composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco (Xander Berkeley), who over the course of his career contributed to more than 200 movies, many as a “ghost composer.” Yet the real focus of Adam Cushman’s film is actually Jerry Herst (Leo Marks), an aspiring musician who in 1945 Los Angeles became one of Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s students. By consigning its most interesting character to a supporting role, this amiable slice of fictionalized history loses a good deal of its heft. Nonetheless, solid direction and a charming Berkeley turn help it stave off insubstantiality, and should make it an appealing option for those interested in a pleasant alternative to big-studio fare.
Wearing dark-rimmed glasses, boasting a gray beard and hair that sticks out in slight tufts from the side of his balding head, and puffing away from his cigarette holder, the Italian-born Castelnuovo-Tedesco is introduced telling an older pupil,...

Luke Eberl is quite the well-rounded filmmaker. Not only is he a very experienced actor, but he’s got a number of credits to his name as a producer, director, writer, cinematographer and editor as well and, with his upcoming feature The Movie, he’s putting the large majority of those skills to use. Eberl is co-writing, directing, producing, shooting and editing the piece about a young man, played by co-writer Edgar Morais, struggling with financial troubles while trying to make it in the film industry out in Los Angeles. The character is ultimately swayed by the Hollywood elite and becomes part of a top tier social circle. The Movie is still in production and very close to crossing over into the post-production phase, but Eberl took some time to talk about the film and...

Danny Trejo is the king of trash cinema: and the man with the most grizzled face on modern screens skates the fertile ground between B-Movie greats and downright D-quality garbage on a regular basis. And as if to prove the point, he is about to strut his stuff in Eyeborgs, an independent sci-fi horror that bills itself as a mesh of the techno-anxiety of I, Robot and Enemy of the State and the creature horrors of Gremlins and Critters.
I’ve just been sent the trailer, and I couldn’t resist sharing it. So look beyond the leap, and feast your eyes on some seriously imbalanced film-making.
Here’s the frankly bonkers synopsis for what promises to be a definite filmic curio:
In the wake of another devastating terrorist attack, the United States government passes the “Freedom of Observation Act, a law requiring all communications and surveillance cameras to be constantly monitored for national security.

I had the chance to read the script for a new webseries coming to you by the Ronalds Brothers and starring Judd Nelson, and it was pretty impressive. Now I get to offer up a first look trailer, and knowing what I do about the series, I'm very hopeful for this one. Take a look at some info from the press release, and then check out the trailer. Shot entirely on the new still camera (Canon 5D Mark II), Here & Now is a whimsical web series with a comedic flare. The series stars Judd Nelson who plays a guy that looks like Judd Nelson, and even though he isn’t, on occasion, he uses “Judd’s” identity to woo the ladies. Playing opposite Nelson is Kevin Berman who plays David, a barbershop owner stuck in a rut and looking for a second lease on life. This is a sweet but...

Director Richard Clabaugh sent word that a new teaser for his movie Eyeborgs has gone on-line; you can see it below. This clip contains a few new glimpses of the titular creatures not seen in the previous trailer (which you can watch at the bottom of this page).
Scripted by Richard and Fran Clabaugh, Eyeborgs stars Adrian Paul, Megan Blake, Luke Eberl and Danny Trejo and centers on a new government security program involving robotic creatures that are essentially ambulatory security cameras. Needless to say, these critters that are intended to protect us wind up becoming a new threat. The movie has its official website here (though right now it’s just hosting that trailer) and a MySpace page here.

With the fall season's heavy hitters already starting to make an appearance, this week's feast of indie offers some calm before the big studio storm. Enjoy it while it lasts.
"Ashes of Time Redux"
Celebrated Hong Kong filmmaker Wong Kar-wai gathered together lost and damaged footage to painstakingly rework his only martial arts epic, first released in 1994, into a fresh, definitive edition (complete with an all new score from Yo-Yo Ma). With a blindingly colorful palette, Wong paints a looping, stylized portrait of an embittered agent Ouyang Feng (the late Leslie Cheung) who channels the unbearable pain of a broken heart into commissioning bounty hunters to commit acts of vengeance. Tony Leung Ka Fai, Maggie Cheung, Carina Lau and Jacky Cheung round out the still-impressive cast.
Opens in New York and Los Angeles.
