Los Angeles-based Syrian director and producer Sam Kadi, who helmed the doc “Little Gandhi” about the life and death of young Syrian peace activist Ghiyath Matar and produced the Oscar-shortlisted animation film “Lamya’s Poem,” has signed for representation with management company Bohemia Group.
Kadi’s first feature was the 2012 indie immigrant drama “The Citizen,” starring Egyptian actor Khaled Nabawy as a Lebanese immigrant who wins a green card through the U.S. lottery system and arrives in New York to claim his documents on Sept. 10, 2001. The drama, also starring Cary Elwes, then follows the protagonist’s hellish 10-year path to citizenship in post-9/11 America, including his detainment by homeland security and his deportation trial.
To make “Little Ghandi,” which was released in 2016, Kadi recruited Syrian activists who risked their lives to help arrange the film’s interviews via Skype. Matar was an organizer of peaceful protests in his hometown of...

The bar has been raised in the "uplifting" immigration drama just enough that you've got to try harder and show more than "This worthy soul from Norway / Guatemala / Vietnam / Albania went through X, Y and Z to get to this country." That tale is tired.
So "The Citizen" throws us this curve ball. Suppose the kindhearted, handsome foreigner who only wants the chance for a better life in America is a Muslim from Lebanon. Suppose the day he gets into the country, thanks to its then-lax "green card lottery" rules, is Sept. 10, 2001. How might that complicate a fairly cut-and-dried storyline?
Not enough.
Egyptian star Khaled Nabawy is Ibrahim Jarrah, who tells a little white lie to the customs guy as he hopefully shows off his green card application and enters the United States. His cousin was to meet him at the airport, but doesn't. No worries.

My friends in Egypt are jubilant at the ouster of Mohammed Morsi. But they are dismayed that the United States -- the media and the Obama administration -- are not more actively embracing what they consider a second revolution and not a military coup. "We have unfinished business," said Mona al-Maghraby, who with her husband actor Khaled Nabawy (at left) has been on Tahrir Square with the anti-Morsi protestors. "It is the continuation of the January 25 revolution. "The theory we keep hearing from the American administration is that they believe this...

Egyptian actor Khaled Nabawy is one of the Arab world’s leading movie and television stars, and has been in American films from "Fair Game" to "Kingdom of Heaven." Nabawy was among the protesters in the street on Friday, marching and chanting for change of the Egyptian regime. He spoke exclusively on Saturday to TheWrap’s Sharon Waxman about the protests and the “terrifying” state of insecurity in Egypt at the moment. You were among the protesters? Yes of course. The big day was yesterday and I was there with the people. I feel what they...

The more you agree with Fair Game politically, the more it will work for you. As a liberal myself, Doug Liman’s story of the Valerie Plame affair succeeded in getting me angry. The film does not take an unbiased approach but that is Ok considering the story it’s telling. However even if you agree with the film’s message, the film still has to work on it’s own as a movie and Fair Game definitely does. It is a taut, intense, smart, and sometimes harrowing political thriller following the days that led up to the bombing of Iraq and it’s aftermath. The film get’s strong performances from it’s two leads, Naomi Watts and Sean Penn.
