There’s something about Ricky Gervais as a comic actor that just can’t be beat. Whether unashamedly playing a dim-witted and sometimes mean-spirited character in The Office, or turning awards shows into roasts, there’s a quality about Gervais that just hasn’t been matched by any other actor. And he’s a talented writer to boot. His performance was even able to turn the otherwise mediocre Ghost Town into something watchable. His latest, The Invention of Lying, outlines a world in which no one can ever say anything except the absolute truth. Not only can they only speak the truth, but keeping mouths shut doesn’t appear to be an option either, as characters spout off every mean-spirited thought that pops into their heads, and announce their sexual exploits as part of regular conversation.
