LOCARNO, Switzerland -- The Italian film Private, a searing examination of a Palestinian family whose home is under occupation by Israeli forces, was the big winner at the 57th Locarno Film Festival, walking away with both the Golden Leopard for best film and the Leopard for best performance by an actor. A soggy Locarno event, whose outdoor facilities were plagued by rain for almost the duration of the 10-day festival, came to a close Saturday night at the Piazza Grande, where the awards were bestowed by the seven-member jury, artistic director Irene Bignardi and festival president Marco Solari. The German film En Garde received two accolades: The Silver Leopard -- awarded second best film of the festival -- was given to the film's director, Ayse Polat, while the film's two protagonists, Maria Kwiatkowsky and Pinar Erincin, shared the Leopard for best female performance.
