Memo to studios and streamers: Do you want Charles Shyer, the creative force behind such massive hits as “The Parent Trap” (which he co-wrote) and “Father of the Bride” (which he directed and co-wrote), to direct a movie for you? Let him do it his way, and you’ll be just fine.
After almost 20 years out of the directing game (his previous film was the Jude Law-starring “Alfie” remake in 2004), Shyer returns to the kind of feel-good filmmaking he made his signature, thanks to his early films, like the aforementioned hits and even “Baby Boom,” all co-written with his ex-wife, fellow comedy queen Nancy Meyers. This time, there is something different: The former studio mainstay has alighted for Netflix.
Shyer’s return to filmmaking bears the usual hallmarks: good-natured comedy, lots of family stuff, a sweet romance, and all in a holiday setting to boot. The film is “The Noel Diary,...

Charles Shyer is back.
The Oscar-nominated screenwriter turned filmmaker has returned to the director’s chair with his first film in years just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday, Netflix’s The Noel Diary starring Justin Hartley and Barrett Doss. Based on the book by Richard Paul Evans, Hartley toplines as a best-selling author who returns home at Christmas to settle his estranged mother’s estate, only to encounter a mysterious stranger as well as a diary that may hold the keys to their respective pasts.
Turns out he cast one of his leads with a little help from his longtime collaborator and onetime wife, Nancy Meyers. Married for nearly two decades before splitting in 1999, the pair collaborated on such classic films as Baby Boom, Irreconcilable Differences, Father of the Bride (and its sequel) and Once Upon a Crime. And while Meyers does...

"I need to know if I ever mattered to her… Maybe you've wondered that about your Dad?" Oooph. Netflix has revealed an official trailer for a cheesy holiday romance, continuing their Hallmark Channel takeover. The Noel Diary is a sappy story about an author who goes home and discovers his mom's old diary in her estate. Maybe he will find "unexpected" love as well? Of course he will. Cleaning out his childhood home at Christmas, a novelist meets an intriguing young woman searching for her birth mother. Will an old diary unlock their pasts — and hearts? Based on the novel by Richard Paul Evans. The film stars Justin Hartley as Jake + Barrett Doss as Rachel, with Essence Atkins, Bonnie Bedelia, and James Remar. Though the best part about this film, obviously, is the doggie that appears a few times – but not often enough. I just hope he's a part of the plot,...

Justin Hartley’s first big project released post-This Is Us will be Netflix’s The Noel Diary, a drama set around the holidays and based on the novel by Richard Paul Evans. Today, Netflix released the first photo featuring Justin Hartley and a canine co-star. The streaming service also announced they’ve set a November 24, 2022 premiere date.
Director Charles Shyer adapted the novel with Rebecca Connor and David Golden.
“I wanted to adapt this novel for a few different reasons. The story of The Noel Diary felt to me like one that could comfortably embrace humor and humanity – while at the same time offer great visual and directorial possibilities. A movie that, as Billy Wilder once said, ‘Could make ’em laugh and make ’em cry.’ I chose to cast Justin Hartley from his work on This Is Us.

Jaime King is making a Mistletoe Promise.
In the upcoming Hallmark movie, the actress stars as Elise Donner, a divorcee in her 30s who isn’t too fond of Christmas.
One day, Elise meets single attorney, Nick (Luke Macfarlane), and the two end up bonding over their mutual dislike for the holidays. So, Nick proposes a deal to help them both get through the holiday season.
“It’s about two people that really have terrible memories of the holidays and Christmas,” King tells People about the movie based on the Richard Paul Evans’ novel of the same name.

Wrapping up a year that has brought unimaginable frustration and heartbreak, Susan Powell's family marked the three-year anniversary of her disappearance at a ceremony this week near where her two sons are buried. "It's a hard time of year," Susan's father, Chuck Cox, tells People. "Our daughter's still missing. Someday, we will find out what happened to her." He added that he is not sure what to make of a West Valley City, Utah, police announcement Thursday that their investigation into Susan's Dec. 6, 2009 disappearance remains active but "has been scaled down," with a reduction in the number of full-time investigators working the case.

Trust me when I say that being away from family and friends during the big, family-oriented holidays blows. This perpetual suckness is worsened when you spend it 1) in a war zone, and 2) in a Muslim country where the mere mentioning of Christ and his yearly birthday party are equal to spitting in someone's face (just joking; nationals are mostly indifferent). Since I cannot be serenaded 24/7 by Christmas jams on the radio or in the mall, and I dont have the option of watching Bad Santa on FX or spending 24 straight hours watching The Christmas Story on TBS, I decided I needed to fill myself with the Christmas cheer in a more accessible-to-Afghanistan media form: bookage. As such, I found author Richard Paul Evans. For something like the last ten years, Mr. Evans has written a Christmas-oriented book, all of which seem to have positive reviews from online readers. After sifting...
