She was billed so infrequently that she was still considered a relative unknown after a nearly three decade career. A few of her more visible roles in "A" quality pictures came to her via the dual role of the mother of both the prince and the pauper in Errol Flynn's The Prince and the Pauper (1937); a prim foundation lady in the Gary Cooper starrer Ball of Fire (1941); the Miniver children's piano teacher in Mrs. Miniver (1942), and the café owner in the classic film noir Out of the Past (1947).

- She was a lifelong staunch supporter of the Republican party. During the 1940s, she became a close friend of the equally conservative Cheryl Walker and was active in both the San Marino Republican Women's Club and the Motion Picture Alliance for the Preservation of American Ideals.
- Field and her husband James Madison Walters II, had two children: son James Madison Walters III and daughter Susana Walters (Mrs. Kerstein). Upon Field's death, she was cremated and her ashes were in the possession of her daughter and son-in-law.
- In the movie "Breakfast in Hollywood," she plays a secretary named Miss Field.
