On “The Narcissist,” Blur’s first new song in eight years, Damon Albarn sings about looking in the mirror and seeing a Pierrot (a commedia dell’arte clown) looking back at him as he attempts to rebuild his ego. “If you see darkness look away,” he sings at one point, before the upbeat chorus kicks in: “I’m going to shine a light in your eyes/You will probably shine it back on me/But I won’t fall this time.” The track is the first taste of the band’s upcoming album,...

Blur have announced The Ballad of Darren, their first album in eight years. The project arrives in full July 14th, while lead single “The Narcissist” is out now.
Produced by James Ford, The Ballad of Darren is described by frontman Damon Albarn as, “an aftershock record, reflection and comment on where we find ourselves now.”
Pre-orders for The Ballad of Darren are ongoing, and the album’s artwork and tracklist are available to view below. Blur’s ninth LP follows 2015’s The Magic Whip. Despite the gap, Albarn’s stayed busy with Gorillaz; everyone’s favorite animated band released their latest record, Cracker Island, earlier this year.
In addition to new music, the freshly reunited Blur are about to embark on their first tour since 2015 with shows in the UK, Europe, Japan, and South America. Tickets are available through Viagogo.

When U.K. soul singer Jessie Ware reinvented herself as a disco diva for 2020’s euphoric What’s Your Pleasure?, it seemed like it might be a pandemic-induced passing fancy—like baking or Zoom happy hours. That! Feels Good!, though, doubles down on its predecessor’s mission statement, answering the titular query with an enthusiastic exclamation.
That! Feels Good! is horn-ier and, if possible, hornier, opening with a moan and a bass groove that leaves no doubt about where things are headed. “That feels good, do it again,” Ware croons on the title track. The album is more Disco than What’s Your Pleasure?, leaning into the campier strains of disco music, with only a couple of detours into post-disco terrain like “Beautiful People.”
What’s Your Pleasure? boasts a more sophisticated, diverse palette—including Italo, house, and funk—but its follow-up’s fluffier philosophy reflects Ware’s obvious elation...

Depeche Mode, the post-synth-pop group that made sensual broodiness a part of the mainstream, have returned with a new album titled Memento Mori. You can stream it below.
Memento Mori, their first album in five years, is also their official return after the loss of founding member Andrew “Fletch” Fletcher in 2022. Their 15th record and much like many others of the last few years, Memento Mori is rooted in the unexpectedly free time the pandemic granted. The loneliness it bred thematically strings the tracks together, along with some more characteristically defining tropes of the group, like the binary between depuration and delight, and delusive devotion. Production by James Ford and Marta Salogni was key in communicating such rich yet glum atmospheres.
In an interview with Zane Lowe from Apple Music 1, Dave Gahan touched on how minimalism was a part of the group’s approach to the new album. “Some of...

Geese have readied their second studio album, 3D Country. The LP is out June 23rd via Partisan Records/Play It Again Sam, and as a preview, the Brooklyn post punks have shared its title track. Alongside the announcement, they have shared a headlining run of UK and European dates (grab tickets here).
Our former Artist of the Month co-produced 3D Country with James Ford. The album came together while the band was in the process of redefining themselves after the buzz they earned right out of the gate. Drummer Max Bassin summed up the album in a statement, saying, “It feels like going to the circus and instead of having a good time, everyone is trying to kill you.”
“3D Country” is a sprawling tale about an old cowboy who starts tripping on psychedelics in the desert. As such, singer Cameron Winter assumes his best throaty drawl, and as the song builds,...

Geese stretch out and make themselves comfortable on “3D Country,” the seven-minute, title-track odyssey from their upcoming second album. Frontman Cameron Winter sings about a cowboy exploring past lives, while his bandmates blend country, rock, and jazz to create music that’s just as kaleidoscopic. The video features a white-bearded cowpoke shooting cans, bathing in a river, and hallucinating around a campfire, all leading up to a suitably psychedelic ending.
The band co-produced the song and the rest of the 3D Country album, due out June 23, with James Ford (Arctic Monkeys,...
