Hollywood’s Cinerama Dome theater, which has been shuttered since the beginning of the pandemic, will not be reopening in 2024, sources confirmed on background. It’s hoped that the Dome and adjacent Arclight Theatres will be ready for a 2025 opening.
The Cinerama Dome and Arclight remained closed even after other theaters reopened after Covid shutdowns and Pacific Theatres filed for bankruptcy in 2021. The Decurion Corporation — the parent company of Pacific Theatres — kept the right to use the Arclight and Pacific brand names at the 14-screen Arclight Hollywood and the Cinerama Dome.
In 2022, the owners, Decurion Corporation, received a liquor license and signaled the intention to change the complex’s name to Cinerama Hollywood.
Decurion subsidiary Pacific Theaters, which had operated the complex before filing for bankruptcy, gave up the other Arclight Theatres locations, most of which have been taken over by other operators. The Culver City location is now run by Amazon,...

Lawyers for three Danny Masterson rape accusers and the Church of Scientology spent more than an hour sparring before a trio of appellate court judges Tuesday amid their ongoing battle over whether the women’s stalking lawsuit against the church must be diverted to an internal Scientology tribunal.
The long-awaited hearing stemmed from a lower court ruling last year that found the women, all former Scientologists, signed binding arbitration agreements more than a decade ago in which they forfeited their rights to ever sue the religious organization and agreed to...

An attorney for Danny Masterson’s accusers argued on Tuesday that they should not have to take their civil claims to a religious arbitration proceeding run by the Church of Scientology.
Masterson, a longtime member of the church, is awaiting a criminal trial on multiple rape charges that could send him to prison for 45 years to life. His accusers have also sued the church, alleging that its agents stalked and harassed them in retaliation for reporting Masterson to the LAPD.
Last December, however, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge granted the church’s motion to refer the lawsuit to religious arbitration, upholding an agreement the plaintiffs had signed when they joined the church decades earlier.
Their attorney, Marci Hamilton, appealed the ruling, and the case was heard on Tuesday before a three-judge panel of California’s Second District Court of Appeal. Hamilton argued that her clients have left the church...

On April 12, Pacific Theatres issued a terse, five-sentence statement announcing that it would not reopen its theaters, which include the much-loved ArcLight Cinemas chain.
On one level, it was not a surprise. The pandemic has forced several other regional theater circuits into bankruptcy.
But the Pacific announcement was odd. Some of the other chains — such as Studio Movie Grill and Alamo Drafthouse — announced plans to reorganize and keep operating. Pacific didn’t do that. It didn’t declare bankruptcy. It just… disappeared.
That fed rumors that the closure was just a ploy. ArcLight’s Cinerama Dome has stood proudly on Sunset Boulevard since 1963. It hosted premieres and made cameos in “Entourage” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” Surely it had to be profitable? If it could fail, then moviegoing itself was in peril. An online campaign begged some deep-pocketed studio to save it.

The workers at the ArcLight Hollywood have been on furlough for more than a year, and have been waiting eagerly for the venue to reopen. On Monday, they got word that the theater would remain closed permanently.
“It’s just sad,” said one of the employees, who asked not to be identified. “We’re just waiting for more details.”
So is everyone else.
Pacific Theatres announced that it would permanently close all of its ArcLight and Pacific locations, which included a dozen theaters in Southern California as well as a handful in Boston, Chicago and near Washington, D.C. It did not explain the reasons for the decision or lay out what might happen to the theaters.
The announcement led to an outpouring of grief on social media, as movie lovers took to Facebook and Twitter to share memories of visiting various ArcLight or Pacific venues over the years, often...
