Rome-based Intramovies has clinched further key sales on the Swedish pic “Paradise is Burning” for which rising talent Mika Gustafson won best director and writer at the 2023 Venice Orizzonti.
The coming-of-age drama was sold to Conic in the U.K. and Ireland, HBO Max for Eastern Europe (TV and VOD rights), Leopardo Filmes in Portugal, Providence/Belas Artes Grupo Brazil, and Mongsang in South Korea.
The story turns on young siblings Laura, Mira and Steffi, who live a totally free and wild life with no parental supervision. When social services intervene, the eldest sister, Laura (Bianca Delbravo-best actress for her role at Lisbon & Estoril Fest), tries to convince the recently befriended Hanna (Ida Engvoll of Netflix’s “Love & Anarchy”) to be the sisters’ stand-in mother.

The acclaimed film, sitting at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, is directed by Tereza Nvotová, with a screenplay by Barbora Namerova and Tereza Nvotová. Set in a secluded mountain village, the film tells the story of two sisters who endure a tumultuous upbringing under the tyranny of their abusive mother.
One fateful day, a tragic accident occurs when the elder sister, Šarlota, flees into the surrounding woods, closely followed by her younger sister, Tamara. The blame for their disappearance falls upon Otyla, a Roma woman residing on the outskirts of the village. Accused of witchcraft, Otyla becomes a scapegoat for the sisters’ vanishing.

Italian sales company Intramovies has scored some fresh sales on Israeli writer-director Ruthy Pribar’s mother-daughter drama “Asia,” winner of the Nora Ephron award at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival and Israel’s candidate for the International Oscar.
The pic starring Shira Haas, who previously gained notice in Netflix mini-series “Unorthodox,” has been sold to Italy (Lucky Red), Eastern Europe (HBO Europe), Spain (Alfa Pictures) and Australia (Moving Story), on top of previously announced deals to Menemsha Films for North America and Curzon for U.K. where “Asia” was released online in November.
Further deals for Cis, Baltics and Latin America are being finalized during the Cannes-backed Ventana Sur market that is currently underway.
