It was a real M3GAN-palooza last night in Hollywood.
Universal Pictures rolled out the black carpet in front of Tcl Chinese Theatre for the world premiere of Blumhouse’s next horror title, M3GAN. The Gerard Johnstone film centers on a brilliant toy company roboticist, played by Allison Williams, who fast-tracks a secret invention after a tragedy makes her the guardian of her 8-year-old niece, Cady, played by Violet McGraw. The invention: a lifelike doll named M3GAN that is paired with Cady to offer comfort and friendship, a decision that sets off a dramatic series of extreme events.
Universal brought the drama to the event, too, because M3GAN seemed to be everywhere you looked. First, it was influencer Kausha Campbell who was among the first VIP guests to walk the carpet and she did so dressed in an ensemble identical to what M...

On the red carpet outside the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles gala Saturday night, the organization’s president and CEO Paul Viviano explained how, if this were a typical event, the musical headliner would deliver a “low-ley” performance of two or three songs. But this year’s installment, held at Santa Monica’s Barker Hangar, was anything but routine.
That was all thanks to Justin Timberlake as the 41-year-old crooner not only agreed to show up, but also to put on a show — a 40-minute mini-concert of 10 songsm including his tracks “Suit & Tie,” “Señorita” and “Can’t Fight the Feeling,” mixed in with classic hits and soul classics from artists like Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Bill Withers and Sam Cooke.
“We’re privileged to have him,” Viviano gushed of Timberlake’s showing at the event, Chla’s first in-person fundraiser in three years.

Saturday night was a big one for Charlize Theron.
The Oscar-winning talent turned up on the Universal Studios backlot to host the second annual block party to benefit the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project (Ctaop), an organization she founded in 2007 that is celebrating a milestone 15th anniversary this year. As part of those duties, Theron was tasked with moderating an on-stage Q&a with the cast and director of Uni’s opening weekend smash Jurassic World: Dominion ahead of an under-the-stars screening, updating guests on the work of Ctaop, shouting out the night’s sponsors and talking up featured performer Wyclef Jean.
And she did it all while jet-lagged after recently flying in from Rome where she’s about to start filming the sequel to Netflix’s hit The Old Guard. If that sounds superhero-ish, Theron fits the bill and then some. Despite...

Will Smith is looking like a very serious contender for Best Actor in this year’s Oscar race for playing tennis patriarch Richard Williams in “King Richard,” but it’s been a long journey to get there, including two previous nominations, the most recent of which was in 2006 for “The Pursuit of Happyness.” His win at the Golden Globes for lead actor in a drama has definitely clinched his front-runner status (though the influence of the Globes is questionable this year due to their controversies getting them yanked from broadcast TV). And by the time you read this he may already be a SAG nominee as well.
Smith has been the overwhelming favorite for Gold Derby odds-makers going all the way back to “King Richard’s” debut at the Telluride Film Festival. That includes 18 Experts and six Editors who have Smith winning his first acting Oscar for the movie, compared...

“King Richard” is ruling Telluride. Reinaldo Marcus Green’s Warner Bros. biopic about Richard Williams, the hard-driving father of straight-outta-Compton tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams, played to a packed house Friday afternoon, building Best Actor buzz for its star and producer, Will Smith. He held the reins on the tennis duo’s story, but it was Jada Pinkett-Smith who suggested her husband meet with Green after she served on the Sundance jury in 2018, the year that the young director broke out with “Monsters and Men.”
This full-bodied performance marks Smith’s best shot at an Oscar in years. He’s been nominated twice, both for roles in which he had to fully inhabit living, breathing people: Boxer Muhammad Ali in Michael Mann’s “Ali” in 2002, and Chris Gardner, a man who rose from homelessness to become a stockbroker and motivational speaker, in Gabrielle Muccino’s 2007 “The Pursuit of Happyness.

Back in 2016, Will Smith and his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, marched to the front line of the #OscarsSoWhite movement. The couple, among others, boycotted the Academy Awards that year in response to actors of color, including “Concussion” star Will, being shut out of the nominations in all four acting categories for the second consecutive Oscars.
Hollywood and the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences have been trying to do better since then. “Black Panther” and “Crazy Rich Asians” were two of the biggest box office hits of 2018, and the Oscar ceremony rewarded more black artists and craftsman than ever before.
Suddenly, though, to some, Will Smith isn’t black enough. The actor has landed at the center of controversy over casting as Richard Williams, the father of tennis superstars Venus and Serena, in the upcoming biopic “King Richard.” According to the movie’s early critics on social media, Smith,...
