Founder of the Film Study Center at Harvard University. Served as director from 1957 to 1997.
He has directed two films that have been selected for the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically or aesthetically" significant: The Hunters (1957) & Dead Birds (1963).
