On June 2, 1943 Lieutenant Charles B. Hall of the Army Air Forces shot down an enemy Italian fighter plane over the island of Pantelleria off the Tunisian Coast. He was the first African American ever to do so.
Hall was a member of the Tuskegee Airmen, the Black fighter pilots who trained at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama and served as critical air support during the invasion of Italy and as bomber escorts over Occupied Europe thereafter. Their achievement is immortalized in a new 360-degree VR film created by New York-based studio Koncept VR and the World War II Foundation.
“Tuskegee Airmen,” directed by Uli Futschik and Joergen Geerds, combines archive footage with voiceover reminiscences of surviving members of the Airmen and newly shot material — such as a 360-degree camera mounted on a P-51 Mustang, the nimble fighter craft associated with the Airmen that often had their tails painted red (hence...

Two staples of the Golden Globes will be sitting out the upcoming 2024 edition of the awards show, which airs on CBS this Sunday, Jan. 7 — the honorary Cecil B. DeMille and Carol Burnett trophies.
The two life-achievement awards, given to Eddie Murphy and Ryan Murphy, respectively, last year, will not be presented this year but expected to return in the future.
The development comes as the Globes over the past 12 months changed ownership and status, becoming a for-profit organization owned by Deadline parent Pmc along with show producer Dick Clark Prods. in a joint venture with Eldridge; their voting body, expanding to 300 members representing 76 countries; and network, moving to CBS (streaming on Paramount+) after decades on NBC.
The ceremony added two new categories this year, for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement and for Best Performance By a Stand-Up Comic On Television, the former featuring eight nominees.

Golden Globes exec producers Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner (of White Cherry Entertainment) don’t appear to be sweating the fact that with less than a month to go, there’s still no announced host for this year’s ceremony.
“Or is there?” Weiss quipped, a bit mysteriously. “We have to leave some room for some interesting announcements along the way.” Added Kirshner: “You said, ‘announced host,’ and we still have four weeks to go. We’ll be there on January 7.”
Globes president Helen Hoehne is similarly cryptic: “To be determined,” she told Variety on Monday morning, as the org announced this year’s nominations at the Beverly Hilton. Insiders believe the Globes, Dick Clark Prods. and now CBS have sent out several feelers, but the timing is tough. Exclusive: The Golden Globes are back in business with Sunshine Sachs Morgan & Lylis. The PR agency has come on board for the upcoming 81st Golden Globe Awards, which will take place on January 7, 2024, working with Dick Clark Productions and its partners on communications efforts.
After representing the Globes for more than a decade, Sunshine Sachs stepped down from the account in March 2022, amid the fallout from the bombshell 2021 LA Times report about the organization’s lack of diversity and questionable ethical and financial practices.
At the time, the top communications firm left the door open, saying in their letter to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association that they “continue to believe in the ability of the HFPA to positively transform” and that “we will always cheer for reform and commitment to diversity and look forward to seeing your continued growth as an organization.”

By this time nearly every year, the Primetime Emmys are in the rearview mirror and Golden Globe and SAG film/TV season is in full swing. But this is clearly not every year. It appears that the Emmys won’t be budging off their rescheduled date of January 15, 2024 even if the SAG-AFTRA strike is settled soon. This means that they’ll be shoehorned in after the Golden Globes (January 7) and the Critics Choice Awards (January 14), with the SAG Awards set for February 24 (presuming SAG-AFTRA has long since been settled by then).
Of course, the Globes as of this writing also remain an awards ceremony without a broadcast or streaming partner after airing live on NBC and streamed on Peacock early this year, having been an NBC staple since 1996. That can and should still change before January. The submission website is about to open for Globe film and TV entries today,...

The Golden Globes have locked their 2023-24 voting body. The organization announced Monday that it expanded to 300 voters for its 81st annual celebration of film, TV and a few new categories, boasting 60% diversity across 76 countries.
The announcement comes after a recent spate of controversy involving the roster of voters for the beleaguered awards organization after the dissolve of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
The new roster includes international voters from countries like Armenia, Cameroon, Costa Rica, Cuba, Guatemala, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Serbia and Tanzania. The new breakdown is 47% female, and 60% racially and ethnically diverse, with 26.3% identifying as Latinx, 13.3% Asian, 11% Black and 9% Middle Eastern.
“Our commitment to maintaining the diversity of our voting body continues,” Helen Hoehne, president, Golden Globes, said in a statement. “Our voters represent 76 countries, bringing a unique international perspective on nominating the best in motion pictures and television this year.”

The Golden Globes continue to reform in unexpected ways: The rejiggered organization has introduced two new categories to its live awards show in January. While Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television is a bit more traditional, following the lead of the Emmys and the Grammys in having a dedicated category for stand-up comedy specials released on a recognized media platform, the other award builds upon a controversial premise first put forward by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2018.
The Golden Globe for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement will include nominees from the year’s most acclaimed, highest-earning and/or most viewed films that have extensive global audience support. The Golden Globes has dropped 18 voters who are former members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and will not be voting for the 81st awards, TheWrap has learned.
The Globes sent an email informing studios of the change, which was obtained by TheWrap, and did not give a reason for the change. The list included three people – Munawar Hosain, Aniko Navai and Howaida Hamdy Serour – who were expelled after investigations into violations of the Globes’ code of conduct. Two of those members, Hosain and Hamdy Serous, had been investigated by TheWrap.
All the members had been among the former HFPA members who were paid $75,000 per year under the agreement to sell the organization to Eldridge Industries.
The Globes did not respond to a request for comment on the email to studios, or to explain why the members had been dropped as voters.
The awards are scheduled to take place on Jan.

The Golden Globes have added two new categories for the 2024 ceremony, one of which is more straightforward than the other. As first reported by Variety, the awards will recognize “cinematic and box office achievement” and the best standup comedy special.
For a film to be eligible in the first new category, it must tally “a box office receipt total/gross of $150 million, of which $100 million must come from the U.S. domestic box office, and/or obtain commensurate digital streaming viewership recognized by trusted industry sources.” There will be a total of eight movies nominated, and they will still be eligible for other categories like Best Motion Picture – Drama or Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. For reference, eligible films like Barbie, The Super Mario Bros., Oppenheimer, Fast X, and John Wick 4 would all be eligible for a nomination in the category.

The Golden Globe Awards will introduce two new categories to its upcoming January broadcast, Variety has learned exclusively. The categories will honor hit movies with global reach in either box office or streaming views, as well as acknowledge the best performance in a stand-up comedy special.
The first new prize is the Golden Globe for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. Eligible nominees will be among the year’s highest-earning or most-seen feature films that also deliver creative excellence.
Titles must have grossed at least $150 million during release, $100 million of which must have come from domestic box office. Streaming films with commensurate viewership will be considered based on data from “recognized industry sources,” the Globes said. Eight films will be eligible for that prize, and can also compete for categories like Best Motion Picture Drama or Comedy as long as they meet criteria for those fields.

After 42 years at Variety, awards editor and senior vice president Tim Gray has left the Hollywood trade publication to serve as executive vice president of the Golden Globes.
Gray will also serve on the board of the Golden Globes organization, working closely with president Helen Hoehne to expand the institution, which was acquired by Dick Clark Productions and Eldridge Industries following the dissolution of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
As EVP of the Golden Globes, Gray will oversee its membership and board of directors. Gray leaves Variety after most recently serving as SVP. He previously served as editor-in-chief of the trade, helming the company through a for-sale period in the 2010s before Penske Media Corporation acquired Variety. Pmc and Eldridge own Dick Clark Productions under a joint venture, which means Gray will still work with Penske. He has also written a book titled “75 Years of the Golden Globe Awards.”

Variety legend Tim Gray, who first joined Hollywood’s dominant trade publication in 1981, has departed after 42 years to start a new chapter with the Golden Globes organization as executive vice president. Gray, who will also serve on its board, will work closely with Golden Globes president Helen Hoehne to evolve the entity — which was formed in June, when Dick Clark Prods. and Eldridge Industries acquired the Golden Globes’ assets, rights and properties from the now-defunct Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
Gray’s appointment comes as the Golden Globes on Thursday also announced its new membership board of directors, and finalized the timetable for its 81st Annual Golden Globe Awards. The ceremony, currently scheduled to take place on January 7, 2024, does not yet have a broadcast partner.

The Golden Globes, which is embarking on a new era after it was acquired by Dick Clark Productions and Eldridge from longtime operator the Hollywood Foreign Press Association earlier this summer, on Thursday revealed its new membership board of directors and timeline for the 2024 awards, which take place January 7.
Organizers said today that the Golden Globes nominations for the 81st edition will be announced Monday, December 11. (See the full timeline below.) Still to come: naming a broadcaster for the ceremony, after its most recent deal with NBC ended with this year’s show. Discussions have been held with outlets including NBC, and an announcement on a new deal is expected by October 2, organizers said today. We hear the ceremony will likely stay at its longtime home at the Beverly Hilton.

Tim Gray, a widely known and respected entertainment journalist who has worked at Variety for the past 42 years, most recently as its svp features, is leaving the trade publication to become the evp of the Golden Globes organization (“the Golden Globes” for short) and oversee its new membership board of directors, the organization announced Wednesday.
Back in June, the Golden Globes replaced the Hollywood Foreign Press Association as the backers of the annual Golden Globe Awards following the acquisition of all the HFPA’s assets, rights and properties by Dick Clark Productions and Eldridge. (Dcp and The Hollywood Reporter share the same ownership.)
Gray’s hiring appears to be part of an effort on the part of the new ownership to restore industry confidence in the Golden Globe Awards, the standing of which was not helped in recent years by questionable ethical and financial conduct on the part of the HFPA.

The Golden Globes rollercoaster continues with the Thursday announcement of a newly formed Membership Board of Directors, plus a timetable for the 81st Annual Golden Globe Awards.
The event, now planned, hosted, and produced by Dick Clark Productions (Dcp), is dissolving the Hollywood Foreign Press Association as we know it, with the new Membership Board of Directors now being responsible for selecting, ratifying and accrediting journalists as voting members for the upcoming awards ceremony in January. The group is said to uphold and enforce rigorous standards and practices for the voting body, and is composed of nine in total, of which five are appointed independent entertainment or media professionals and four others elected from within the Golden Globe Association membership.
Helen Hoehne, former President of the HFPA, is now Golden Globes President, with Tim Gray, former awards editor and Senior Vice President for Variety, joining her and the organization as Executive Vice President effective immediately.

Sarah Snook (“Succession”) was nominated for Best Drama Supporting Actress in 2020 and 2022. But in 2023 she took a gamble on the lead category. So far the gamble is paying off. She earned a nomination for Best Drama Actress. According to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, she’s also the front-runner to win. And not just the front-runner, the overwhelming front-runner.
As of this writing Snook gets leading odds of 82/25, but that number doesn’t tell the whole story. As it stands, she has unanimous support from Gold Derby’s staff Editors who cover awards year-round, the Top 24 Users who got the highest scores predicting last year’s Emmy winners, and the All-Star Top 24 who got the highest scores when you combine prediction results from the past two years.

Variety won 14 first-place awards Sunday night at the Los Angeles Press Club’s 65th annual SoCal Journalism Awards, more than twice as many as any other entertainment publication.
The 14 awards represented a historic high for Variety at the SoCal Journalism Awards, topping the previous best of 12 first-place prizes the magazine earned in 2018. Variety came into Sunday’s ceremony with a record 96 nominations, representing work published online and in print during the 2022 calendar year.
The awards were handed out during a gala dinner attended by hundreds in the historic Crystal Ballroom at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.
Several staffers won dual honors. Something could happen at the 95th Academy Awards that has never happened before: a remake of a Best Picture champion could win Best Picture. The movie in question is “All Quiet on the Western Front,” which initially won the coveted Oscar prize for 1930 and is now a hot contender to be named the best film of 2022. The Netflix remake, directed by Edward Berger, earned nine total bids this year: picture, adapted screenplay, international film, score, sound, production design, cinematography, makeup & hairstyling and visual effects. If it wins Best Picture on Sunday, March 12, 2023, it will become the 17th war movie to prevail.

From major titles making their way to theaters to prominent auteurs delivering highly anticipated projects to streamers continuing to flex their strength, 2022 was a dynamic year for cinema. Variety asked editors Peter Debruge, Clayton Davis, Tim Gray, and Jenelle Riley, to answer four questions about this past year in film and discuss its standout moments. The questions are:
1. How would you rate 2022’s films against previous years?
2. What was the most important issue this year for the industry?
3. What film inspired you the most this year?
4. What scene stuck with you the most this year?

1. The theatrical experience is back — “Top Gun: Maverick” saw to that last summer, with James Cameron’s “Avatar: The Way of the Water” confirming audiences’ commitment to the big-screen experience at year’s end.
