The big-scale Cinerama fantasy once thought unrecoverable is back — a terrific restoration brings us George Pal’s ode to fairy tales, filmed on Bavarian locations with an international cast. Laurence Harvey and Karl Boehm are the brothers that compiled the famed tales of princesses, witches, magic spells and fiery dragons. Their idealized biography is interspersed with three full fairy tale stories, about a magic cloak of invisibility, a cobbler’s helpful elves, and a pair of fearless dragon slayers. The show has dancing, beautiful locations, a sequence with Puppetoons and a terrific animated dragon. Featured stars are Claire Bloom, Walter Slezak, Barbara Eden, Oscar Homolka, Martita Hunt, Yvette Mimieux, Russ Tamblyn, Jim Backus, Terry-Thomas and Buddy Hackett; a long-form docu goes into fascinating detail explaining how Dave Strohmaier and Tom March accomplished the mind-boggling restoration.

When the news broke in December 2017 that Quentin Tarantino had approached Paramount Pictures with a pitch for a new Star Trek film, one could hear the collective sound of countless fans’ jaws dropping open. One of the most respected (and controversial) filmmakers of his time, the imagination behind modern classics like Pulp Fiction and Inglourious Basterds, wanted to put his imprimatur on one of the most beloved (if creaky) sci-fi franchises of all time?
Apparently that was the case, even if it was unclear whether Tarantino actually wanted to direct the thing himself or just sort of shepherd his story idea to the screen. A writers’ room was convened, with different scribes proposing different ways to flesh out Tarantino’s pitch, with The Revenant screenwriter Mark L. Smith eventually winning the gig.
Thus began a confusing, four-year journey through development hell for what might have been as many as three different Trek features.

Mill Creek and Kit Parker have raided the Columbia vault once again in search of Noir Gold from the ‘fifties. Their selection this time around has a couple of prime gems, several straight crime thrillers and domestic jeopardy tales, and also a couple of interesting Brit imports. They aren’t really ‘Noir’ either, but they’re still unexpected and different. The top title is Don Siegel’s incomparable The Lineup, but also on board is a snappy anti-commie epic by André De Toth. Get set for a lineup of impressive leading ladies: Diana Dors, Arlene Dahl, Anita Ekberg — and the great Colleen Dewhurst as a card-carrying Red!

A Houston dentist who befriended a U.S. Air Force veteran surprised him with thousands of dollars of free dental work when he came in for a routine cleaning.
Dr. David Nguyen met retired Staff Sergeant David Harmon at a local gym in their River Oaks, Houston, community. The two quickly bonded over small talk, and when Nguyen revealed he was a dentist, he invited Harmon in for a cleaning at his Urbn Dental office. But when Harmon finally came, Nguyen discovered that he urgently needed more work than he anticipated.

Despite popular belief, William Shatner doesn't sit at home every night watching old "Star Trek" or "T.J. Hooker" reruns. In fact, the actor -- best known as Capt. James T. Kirk on "Star Trek" -- doesn't like to watch himself at all. But recently, he was stuck at home recovering from hip surgery when late-night television offered him a surprise. A local affiliate was airing the Season 2 episode "A Piece of the Action," written by David P. Harmon and Gene L. Coon where the Enterprise finds a planet that has modeled itself after 1930s Chicago, mafia and all. For some reason, Shatner didn't reach for the remote control, and he allowed the episode to play. Although the performance was 40 years ago, the actor said he felt quite impressed with what he brought to the table. "I haven't ...
