On September 15, 1965, Irwin Allen whisked television viewers out of their living rooms on a journey to the outer reaches of space, where the Robinson family finds themselves marooned on a strange, not-entirely-hospitable planet thanks to the sabotage of their chief medical officer. For a nation dreaming of a seemingly impossible moon landing, "Lost in Space" was both wish fulfillment and cautionary tale; a part of us was enthralled by the notion of exploring the cosmos, but we were also terrified by the thought of aimlessly hurtling through a universe with no known end and no direction home.
Allen's series didn't dwell much on the more frightening aspects of the Robinsons' predicament. Unlike Gene Roddenberry's "Star Trek" (which would debut a year later), Allen employed a fairly rigid formula that found the Robinsons and the hunky Major Don West (Mark Goddard) having to outwit the generally inept scheming of Dr.

Lost in Space made its big Netflix comeback count by going back to basics.

Before the Netflix reimagining premiered in April 2018, the idea that any new version of Lost in Space would be decent—much less excellent—seemed unlikely, if not outright impossible. Prior to the Netflix version, there were two reboots: one you’ve forgotten and another you’ve likely never seen—the underwhelming 1998 Lost in Space film from New Line Cinema and an unaired 2004 series directed by John Woo called The Robinsons. Like some of the Alpha Centauri colonists who failed to dodge the death-ray from a robot, both failed spectacularly. So, the challenge facing a new version of the Robinsons’ epic adventure was clear: How could...

This year’s DocLab opened with a video message from the Commander in Chief of the United States, but not the current one; speaking from his desk at the White House in 1969, President Richard Nixon held forth about the state of the arts and the future of technology.
Not that long ago, this would have been a technological miracle, if not witchcraft. But in today’s world, “deep fakes” are becoming part of the new norm—and it’s this normality that’s being pursued by 2019’s slate of DocLab projects, which include such titles as “Artificial: Room One,” an installation that lets visitors talk to chatbots; “Year of the Robot,” a film that sees hospital patients interacting with automatons; and the video piece “Vast Body 22,” in which viewers can physically interact with the dancers they see pop up onscreen.
“The theme is ‘Domesticating Reality,’” explains Sonnen. “In short, it...

The House of the Seven Gables
Blu ray
Kino Lorber
1940 / 1:33:1 / 89 Min.
Starring Margaret Lindsay, Vincent Price, George Sanders
Written by Lester Cole
Cinematography by Milton R. Krasner
Directed by Joe May
In 1940’s The House of the Seven Gables, Margaret Lindsay transforms from sunny romantic to stone-faced recluse in the blink of an eye – her startling performance gives a 20th century hot foot to Universal’s 19th century melodrama.
Published in 1851, Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel is set during the new era of enlightenment – a superstitious few may resist but the wheels of change are turning – just not fast enough for the Pyncheon family, a seemingly cursed dynasty plagued by corruption and cruelty.
Lindsay plays Hepzibah Pyncheon whose lover Clifford has been framed by his brother Jaffrey for the death of their father. A cold-blooded fop maintaining the family’s avaricious tradition, Jaffrey covets the distinctly gabled ancestral home and its hidden treasures.

Amsterdam — Under the banner of ‘The Humanoid Cookbook.’ this year’s DocLab is going back to the basics of human interaction.

What’s old is new again, and that includes the practice of gender-flipping a role. Commonly seen in folk tales and comic book properties, the practice has been a staple on the big screen and gaining popularity on TV, especially when it comes to reimagining male characters as female.
Swapping a character’s gender often occurs in the process of remaking or reimagining a pre-existing story. The most recent example on TV is the casting of Parker Posey to portray the villainous Dr. Smith on Netflix’s reboot of “Lost in Space.” The role was originated by Jonathan Harris in the ‘60s-era Irwin Allen series.
But gender-flipping can also occur in the process of creating a new character. In the case of lawyer Jeri Hogarth on “Marvel’s Jessica Jones,” the production started by crafting a female character and then retrofitting her with an identity from Marvel. That’s how Jeryn Hogarth,...

Depending on your age your first encounter with The Space Family Robinson may have been courtesy of Master of Disaster Irwin Allen, who brought the show Lost in Space to Us TV for three seasons in the late ’60s. Joining the technicolor wonder of the original Star Trek in their second series (the first was shot in Black and White) the Lost in Space series was reflective of a future-looking American society, whose own journey to the stars was taking place at the time.
With the best science fiction holding a mirror up to the dreams and troubles of contemporary society, the original Lost in Space may come across as a kitsch take on Forbidden Planet and the numerous other outward bound adventures. However it drew on the public’s fascination with the colonisation of space, as well the encroaching advent of the Cold War, to serve up a memorable...

The Robinson family is returning to television in Netflix’s reboot of “Lost in Space,” but this time the women play a bigger role as the family faces thorny relationships and a female adversary in their fight for survival.
The life-span of the Robinson family spans centuries, including the 1812 novel “The Swiss Family Robinson,” the 1960s black-and-white and color television series, and most recently the 1998 film starring Gary Oldman. At the Hollywood premiere for the Netflix version of the family drama, executive producer Zack Estrin, Matt Sazama, and Burk Sharpless said they were inspired by the first six black-and-white episodes in the ’60s for their retelling, but they wanted to update it to be more reflective of today.
“I think the gender roles in the first series are definitely a product of their time and aren’t really what we want to see on TV right now,” Sharpless said. He...

How do you make one of TV's all-time cheesiest science-fiction shows look cool?
That's what Netflix and writer-producers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless had to be asking themselves when they decided to revive Lost in Space – producer Irwin Allen's beloved-but-clunky 1960s space opera about a clan of bold braniacs marooned on a new planet while restarting human civilization. Because let's be frank: The original was no Star Trek. It was aimed mainly at kids. When the Robinsons – no Swiss family, they – found themselves, well, lost, they had to rely on their smarts and courage.

When you think of Classic TV from the 1960s that were sci-fi in nature, odds are that your mind will go to the original Star Trek and not necessarily Lost in Space. But this show was the more family-oriented, campy drama that followed the adventures of the Robinson family (plus a couple of non-relatives) — and which is being reborn as a new Netflix series. Sent from Earth to explore the potential of another habitable planet, their mission is sabotaged and they find themselves… well, lost in space. But what they found were generations of fans who have celebrated the show for all these years. One was Kevin Burns, a producer who fell in love with the series and has carried the torch, putting together the massive 50th Anniversary Blu-ray complete series set in 2015 (with an unbelievable amount of extras), and who serves as executive producer of the reboot that launches...

It looks like Parker Posey will climb aboard the Jupiter 2, as the actress has reportedly joined Netflix's Lost in Space remake series to play a key role familiar to fans of the original show.
Deadline reports that Posey (Scream 3, Blade: Trinity, Louie, Clockwatchers, Best in Show) will play Dr. Smith, a character who was the initial antagonist and (eventual) source of occasional comic relief portrayed by Jonathan Harris in the original series, which aired from 1965–1968 on CBS. Fans of the show will remember Dr. Smith as someone who set out to sabotage the Robinson family on their space voyage aboard the Jupiter 2 (originally referred to as the Gemini 12). No specific details about Posey's version of Dr. Smith have been revealed at this time.

Last summer it was announced that Netflix ordered a remake of the classic 1965 sci-fi series Lost in Space. The new series was described as an “epic but grounded science fiction saga focusing on a young explorer family from earth lost in an alien universe and the challenges they face in staying together against seemingly insurmountable odds."
Deadline is now reporting that Parker Posey (Dazed and Confused, Best in Show, Portlandia, Mascots) has signed on to co-star in the series. She is set to play Dr. Smith in the series, who was previously played by Jonathan Harris in the original series. Then Gary Oldman played the character in the 1998 feature film. They are obviously switching things up with the character.

She is set to play Dr. Smith in the series, who was previously played by Jonathan Harris in the original series. Then Gary Oldman played the character in the 1998 feature film. They are obviously switching things up with the character.

Of all the many, many existing properities being repackaged, overhauled and/or rebooted and fired towards TV, Lost in Space doesn’t exactly leap off the page as must-see television. Granted, the cult 1960s sci-fi isn’t short of potential, but it’s only now that Netflix has sprung its casting spree for the 2018 redo that we’re beginning to stand up and take notice.
Toby Stephens (Black Sails) and Molly Parker (House of Cards) climbed aboard early on to play John and Maureen Robinson, respectively, and now, Deadline brings word of the latest addition to the cast: Parker Posey. It marks something of a reunion between the actress and Netflix following Mascots, while her other notable credits include Columbus and Woody Allen drama Café Society.
When it comes to Lost in Space, Posey will play the part of Dr. Smith, a stowaway who manages to find her way aboard the Robinson’s ship.

The coolest thing you’re going to find all year is hitting on September 15th, and it’s packed with goodies. It’s the 50th Anniversary of Lost in Space, and the complete series is going to be available on Blu-Ray, and the release gives you a lot for your money.
Not only does the release have over 7 hours of total bonus content, but it has brand new featurettes, new commentary tracks on episodes, and tons of archival footage.
This is an amazing package that is not only something for fans of the show, but is a great opportunity to expose the show to millions of new ones.
Much as the show has gone down in history as something of a goof, you might be surprised at how much future shows owe to this one, and not just by way of carving out a bit of cultural popularity for the sci-fi genre.

Near the end of a panel discussion titled “The Story World: Creating Interactive Experiences That Work” — part of the Sundance Film Festival's New Frontier program — Jonathan Harris cautioned aspiring new media storytellers to think about the tradeoff between timeliness and timelessness in their work. “Whenever you’re dealing with bleeding edge technologies, there is the trap that you’re just doing things that are very timely," he said, "but in five years they just look kind of silly.” Harris went on to cite Michael Naimark’s distinction between “first word art” and “last word art”: First word art is experimental, rule-breaking, lacking in any predefined formal structure that allows us to compare it to other art of its time. Last word art, as Naimark explains it, is “virtuosity after the rules have been fixed." These categories seem like a perfect way to frame the 2014 New Frontier exhibit, a small...

I honestly had very little to go one when I added A.J. Edwards’ The Better Angels to my predictions list and the fact that it has been included among the New Frontier offerings means that we’re in for something out of the ordinary, as the section has often challenged conventional form. Produced by Terrence Malick, and filmed in B&W, it features Jason Clarke, Diane Kruger, Brit Marling, Wes Bentley and a newbie actor taking on the role of a young Lincoln. Here is the entire listing of five (plus installation projects), which will include Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s on-going Hit Record project.
The Better Angels / U.S.A. (Director and screenwriter: A.J. Edwards) — Set in the harsh wilderness of Indiana, this is the story of Abraham Lincoln’s youth. It tells of the hardships that shaped him, the tragedy that marked him forever, and the two women who guided him to immortality.

When Sundance announced the films in competition for the 2014 festival yesterday, its organizers noted that they were impressed by the caliber of cinematic artistry — mostly due to technology — that freed up filmmakers to experiment with different genres. No category of the festival is more rooted in genre than Park City at Midnight, the late-night section that specializes in horror and the supernatural, and this year’s slate has several potential breakouts. “The Midnight lineup came together in a way that is about the strongest group we’ve ever had, top to bottom,” says Trevor Groth, Sundance’s director of programming.

Sundance Institute executives announced on December 5 that the festival will feature new work from artist Doug Aitken as well as Klip Collective’s external projections on the Egyptian Theatre.
An expanded New Frontier will showcase installations, performance, transmedia and panel discussion section. Most of the installations will be housed at a new, 5,000-square-foot location at the Gateway in Park City adjacent to Main Street.
Doug Aitken’s The Source (Evolving) will occur at a nearby location along Main Street.
“As human and machine, biological and media experiences blur and hybridise, the distinctions between them are also becoming irrelevant,” said curator of the exhibition and Sundance Film Festival senior programmer Shari Frilot.
“The digital and the organic integrally constitute a new primordial pool. What does creativity and storytelling look like if we revel in this new way of being?”

If rightwing writer Melanie Phillips can launch her own line of branded goods, maybe those of a leftish bent should do so too
✒ When I saw that my old chum Melanie Phillips – once a Guardian lefty, now a rightwing columnist on the Daily Mail – was bringing out her own brand of merchandise, I assumed it was a joke. I was wrong.

Two thoughts occurred to me. First, we Guardian columnists ought to have a line of collectibles fit for soggy liberals. A poncho to stop us being dripping wet, reversible so we can have it both ways. A cap marked "I ❤ all forms of diversity". Gloves, the left embroidered "On...

With his documentary I Love Your Work, filmmaker and artist Jonathan Harris attempts to capture a view of women in the porn industry that we don’t ordinarily see — the very human one. Taking place over 10 connective days and focusing on nine women who work in the lesbian porn industry, the film clocks in at over six hours. Harris’s crew follows each woman for 24 hours, and everything is caught on film; from mundane acts like brushing their teeth and ordering lattes, to actual pornographic photoshoots. It is at once fascinating, and tedious. I Love Your Work is a slow, drawn out process, much different from the instant gratification that porn presents to consumers. This of course, is exactly the point that Harris is trying to make. In fact, the whole process of watching the film is set up very methodically.

?The caliber of work being done on television these days is incredible, and our director nominees in each category are an indispensable element to the success of every project — establishing and enhancing the vision and tone, eliciting outstanding performances and furthering the narrative arc through their creative choices,? said Hackford. ?That they are able to create excellence regardless of obstacles like tighter schedules and in an environment in which audiences have more entertainment options to choose from — is a true testament to the importance of directorial skill in television.?
The winners will be announced at the 64th Annual DGA Awards Dinner on Saturday, January 28, 2012 at the Grand Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland in Los Angeles.
