Everton will take a slender lead into the second leg of their Capital One Cup semi-final against Manchester City after battling to a 2-1 victory over Manuel Pellegrini’s side at a packed-out Goodison Park.
The Toffees allowed their opponents to settle into the match far too easily, struggling to find any rhythm in the opening stages, but soaked up the early pressure and took control, snatching the lead through defender Ramiro Funes Mori in first-half stoppage time.
City were second best for the majority of the evening, but hit Everton with a blistering counter-attack with less than 15 minutes remaining, substitute Jesus Navas capping off the move to notch up a precious away goal for the visitors.

Football wouldn’t be the same without poor refereeing. What would we moan about after the game or scream about during it?
Imagine a match where the officials get everything correct and you trot home afterwards with three points in your rucksack and a beaming smile across your face. Actually, that sounds brilliant doesn’t it? Although, if you’re a Newcastle United fan it’s probably a feeling that you have rarely felt?
The people of Tyneside enjoy a good rant about an incompetent official almost as much as seeing the ball hit the back of the net and luckily for them there has been a number of disgraceful decisions to analyse throughout the Magpies’ Premier League history.
There is nothing more gut wrenching than a wrongly disallowed goal that would have put your side in front against Manchester United or a player being...

To steal a phrase from page one of Michael Owen’s book of Premier League cliches, yesterday’s matchup between Newcastle United and Manchester City was a game of two halves.
The first period saw the away side well on top. The black and whites continued with their new fearlessly bullish approach that worked so well against champions Chelsea a week prior. Steve McClaren’s side weathered an early storm to take the lead through a stooping Aleksandar Mitrovic header. They should have doubled their lead but a tap in for the Serbian was wrongly ruled offside, before the 21-year-old had a one-on-one brilliantly saved by the toe-end of Joe Hart.
All was going well.
One thing I noticed sitting in the Etihad’s press box was how United’s touchline management team of McClaren and Paul Simpson were conducting their business.

Well that all escalated very quickly. No sooner had Newcastle United resurfaced for the second half with the scores all level – after a very industrial, yet classy first period where they even took the lead – they were 4-1 down and out of the game.
Five goals from Sergio Aguero swayed the tide in Manchester City’s favour after United, rather sickeningly after what happened in the second half, could have easily been a few goals up in the first half.
New signing Aleksandar Mitrovic – who opened the scoring with a stooping header early on after great work from Kevin Mbabu and Georginio Wijnaldum – could have had a first half treble after a tap in was wrongly ruled out for offside, before a glorious chance save by the toe-end of Joe Hart thwarted him once again.
Those misses cost United as City equalised in the moments leading up to half time.

All eyes were on Raheem Sterling as Manchester City travelled to the Hawthorns but it was the familiar talent of Yaya Toure that inspired the away side to a dominate victory.
The Ivorian’s shot after just nine minutes got Manuel Pellegrini’s side off to a roaring start as it glanced off David Silva and trundled past Boaz Myhill.
Fifteen minutes later and the 32-year-old had grabbed his second, nonchalantly curling a shot into the top corner to extend City’s lead.
Skipper, Vincent Kompany put the game out of the Baggies reach and headed in from a corner as City delivered an early statement of Premier League title intent.
Debutant Raheem Sterling missed the chance to score on his debut after breaking clear on goal only to see his shot saved by Myhill.

Papiss Cisse and Jonny Evans face a seven match ban after spitting at each other during Manchester United’s 1-0 win at St James’ Park last night.
The pair tangled during an enthralling battle in the first half, appearing to aim a series of kicks at each other before the situation turned even more unsavoury close to the interval.
After the defender upended his opponent, TV footage shows Evans spitting down towards the floor in the direction of his opponent. Wether he meant it to land on the Senegalese is anyone’s guess.
Cisse reacted by putting his head towards Evans and seemingly spitting back at him, although it is not clear if it landed on the Northern Ireland international.
The referee missed the incident meaning the Fa, who are waiting for Anthony Taylor’s report, can ban the pair retrospectively for six games each.

Manchester City are reportedly plotting a sensational summer swap deal with Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur that would see Lilywhites’ goalkeeper Hugo Lloris brought to the club with Joe Hart going in the opposite direction.
Spurs’ French international stopper has indicated a desire to be playing top level European football next season and, with Spurs unlikely to achieve anything better than a place in the Europa League, he could well be on his way out come the next transfer window.
The likes of Ben Foster of West Bromwich Albion have been linked with the White Hart Lane club as Lloris’ potential replacement, but this kind of news has underwhelmed Spurs fans. However, despite his sometimes wayward form at the Etihad in recent seasons, the signing of England number one Hart would go a long way to appeasing the loss of the current White Hart Lane favourite.

Edin Dzeko scored twice and Yaya Toure bagged a third as Manchester City moved to within three points of Premier League leaders Chelsea by ruthlessly disposing of neighbours United.
Dzeko put the visitors in front after less than fifty seconds with a simple tap in and completed his brace after half time after running into the United box unmarked to convert Samir Nasri’s cross.
And Toure added the gloss his side’s performance deserved on 90 minutes with a drive into the bottom corner as the champions crashed to their second defeat of the season to their derby rivals.
United, struggling under new manager David Moyes, were subjected to another sobering evening at Old Trafford less than a fortnight on from their heavy home defeat to Liverpool.
And things weren’t much better here as their once ‘noisy neighbours’ proved the balance in power has well and truly shifted in Manchester.

Daniel Sturridge continued his red-hot form and scored in the final 10 minutes as England left it late to defeat a stubborn Denmark side.
For most of the encounter it seemed as though Denmark’s goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel was going to deny Roy Hodgson’s side a deserved victory, however Sturridge’s later header finally broke the deadlock.
The match began in a cagey fashion, with neither side able to dominate possession during the opening 10 minutes.
As the game settled down England started to dominate proceedings, but with little end product.
The Three Lions were struggling to carve out any clear cut chances, typified by several speculative efforts from Wayne Rooney.
It was not until the final five minutes of the half that Hodgson’s side finally managed to create some genuine goal-scoring opportunities.

A second half goal from Yaya Toure ensured Manchester City moved back to within three points of the top of the Premier League with a battling defeat over a determined Stoke side.
City hadn’t scored in three of their last four games prior, and for long stages it looked as though they would again be frustrated until Toure prodded in from close range on 70 minutes.
Edin Dzeko then missed a glorious chance to make it two, but it didn’t matter as the home side picked up the points they needed to stay in touch with the top three.

Forget five goal thrillers, last minute equalisers & games rife with controversey. Manchester City 0 – 1 Chelsea was the most impressive performance of the season to date. In a game billed (and rightly so) as the biggest of the season, Chelsea showed just why they are genuine title contenders, despite Jose’s attempts to convince us otherwise.
Premier League neutrals were given a treat at the Etihad last night, from start to finish the match had a real top of the table feel about it. Of course, that is not literally true as Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal side sit at the summit of the league, looking down to Chelsea and Manchester City with a seemingly precarious two point gap.
The match itself was decided by an unstoppable shot from Serbian full-back Branislav Ivanovic. The goal came after Eden Hazard’s skill and persistance had created an opening for Ramires.

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has made a marked improvement since arriving at Old Trafford from Atletico Madrid in 2011.
After a difficult spell in England which saw his body strength and abilities to cope with the rigours of English football called into question, the Spaniard has put his troubles behind him.
De Gea’s performances have been one of only a few positives from what has largely been a troublesome debut season for David Moyes, who has struggled to step into Sir Alex Ferguson’s shoes.
United have already lost eight times this season, the most games they have ever lost since the inception of the Premier League, and are floundering in seventh.
But while the Red Devils have been struggling, midfielder Darren Fletcher recently singled de Gea out for praise, saying:
He has been fantastic for us. There has not been a better goalkeeper around for the last 18 months.

A 2-0 win to City may sound like a fairly routine result in this fixture but the score line does little to reflect the controversy and drama that surrounded events on the pitch at St James’ Park this afternoon.
Newcastle had the better of the opening exchanges with some high tempo pressing but the Magpies fell behind in the eighth minute to a slick passing move, the kind of which have become a trademark of Pellegrini’s side. Silva’s pinpoint through ball found Kolarov and with Yanga Mbwia nowhere to be seen, the City full back wasted little time in whipping in a cross for Dzeko to finish from close range. The Bosnian striker left Steven Taylor in his wake as he muscled past him for a tap in en-route to handing the Citizens the lead.

A spirited Newcastle performance, spurred on by a particularly suspect decision from the officials to disallow what would have been a wonderful equalising Cheick Tiote goal at 1-0, was ultimately fruitless as Alan Pardew’s side succumbed to their fourth defeat in a row.
An early Edin Dzeko strike and a late Alvaro Negredo goal was enough for Manchester City to climb back to the top of the Premier League but Newcastle will feel their performance and ill-fortune deserved much, much, more in a game in front of the live Sky TV cameras.
Newcastle were probably on top from 20 minutes onwards and the goal from Tiote would have been nothing more than they deserved for their attacking endeavour. Championship team Blackburn Rovers caused the first shock of Fa Cup third round weekend when they held 2011 winners Manchester City at Ewood Park. Skipper Scott Dann earned a replay for Gary Bowyer’s side by cancelling out an Alvaro Negeredo goal.
Both strikes came from corners and now Manuel Pellegrini has yet another midweek game to plan for in January on top of two Capital One Cup semi-final legs with West Ham. City had Belgian defender Dedryck Boyata sent off at Blackburn for two bookings.
Rovers boss Bowyer handed ex-England goalie Paul Robinson his first start since December 2012 after a troublesome back problem and career-threatening blood clot on his lung. Top scorer Jordan Rhodes dropped to the bench prompting fears from home fans he would be sold.
D. J. Campbell also made way as Blackburn made three changes from their away win over Leeds.

Manchester City went top of the Premier League table ahead of the rest of the New Year’s Day fixtures with a 3-2 away win at Swansea. Wilfried Bony scored twice, but strikes from Fernandinho, Yaya Toure and Aleksandar Kolarov sealed victory for the visitors.
Both teams put together incisive moves early, but missed the target. First Edin Dzeko lashed across the face of goal for City and then Bony had Joe Hart scrambling at the other end as a 25-yarder flew wide.
Swansea lost winger Pablo Hernandez early to a hamstring problem. Roland Lamah, who scored in their draw at Aston Villa last time, came on. City then went ahead inside 15 minutes through Fernandinho.
The hosts could only clear a right wing corner to the Brazilian outside the box and his sweet strike flew through Jose Canas’s legs and beyond Gerhard Tremmel. Hart then saved low from Jonathan De Guzman.

Manchester City recovered from 2-0 down at the Allianz Arena to inflict a rare defeat on Champions League holders Bayern Munich, but still finished behind them in Group D.
James Milner netted the winner after David Silva and Aleksandar Kolarov’s penalty cancelled out Thomas Muller and Mario Gotze strikes.
City made a terrible start conceding on five minutes. Defender Dante picked out Muller with a lovely long ball which the German chested down as he ran infield and away from Kolarov. Joe Hart was swiftly beaten by a low strike across him.
Bayern continued to build on their lead with Brazil’s Dante nodding a Toni Kroos free kick straight at England and City stopper Hart. Ballon d’Or nominee Franck Ribery won a corner with Joleon Lescott putting in a very shaky display in defence.
From that set piece hosts Munich doubled their lead through Gotze 12 minutes in.

Manchester City will have to cause an unlikely upset and affect a three-goal swing on hosts Bayern Munich to top Champions League Group D.
Both sides have already guaranteed their places in the knockout stages ahead of this clash. Munich need a point to clinch top spot, but boast a fearsome and strong home record.
City lost their only previous visit to the Allianz Arena 2-0 in September 2011 with Mario Gomez bagging a first half brace. Manuel Pellegrini’s team were comprehensively beaten at home by Bayern on matchday two this term with supporting trio Franck Ribery, Thomas Muller and Arjen Robben all on target.

“Winning the title this year would be a greater achievement than before, yes, I think so,” commented Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho in his post-match interview after his side beat Southampton at the weekend, and how right he is, mainly because it looks unlikely that the club will win the league.
The Blues have looked decidedly shaky this season, and despite the fact that their games have in the main ended in victories, there has been the odd uncharacteristic slip up, and games that shouldn’t have gone their way have done.
Whether it’s a Joe Hart error in the final minute to allow for a late Chelsea winner or a dubious penalty award in similar late circumstances against West Brom, the Blues have been dug out of a hole on more than one occasion.
The fear factor that came with Mourinho’s first tenure at Stamford Bridge has seemingly deserted him,...

Manchester City eased past Swansea City to continue their undefeated streak at home in the Premier League thanks to a Samir Nasri double.
Alvaro Negredo opened the scoring and the Sky Blues weathered a fightback from the visitors in the first half before ending the game as a contest in the second.
The win means City remain the only side in England’s top four divisions not to have lost at home this season, and now sit 3rd in the table, two points off Chelsea.
For Swansea, this is their second consecutive defeat, having gone down 1-0 at home to Valencia in the Europa League last Thursday, with Michael Laudrup’s men dropping into the bottom half down to 13th.
Nasri was the chief architect of Swansea’s misfortunes on Sunday evening, the Frenchman scoring twice from close range to add to Negredo’s brilliant freekick after just 8 minutes.

Samir Nasri struck twice as Manchester City beat Swansea to preserve their 100% home record in the Premier League.
A further goal from Alvaro Negredo secured victory, to keep intact the Citizen’s record of being the only side in England’s top four divisions not to have lost on home soil.
Having prevailed 6-0 in their previous game against Tottenham, the question was not whether City would win, but how many they would win by, and that feeling was felt keenly when Negredo opened the scoring after just seven minutes.
The Spaniard drew a clumsy challenge from Jose Canas on the edge of the penalty area and there was little questioning who would take the free-kick, as the forward stepped up to belt his effort into the bottom corner of Gerhard Tremmel’s goal.
Nasri then ended the game as a contest in the second half, slotting...

It is no secret in the world of football that Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini is on the lookout for a new goalkeeper. The Chilean coach has dropped former first choice keeper Joe Hart on several occasions this season after a series of calamitous performances, and rumours of potential replacements have been gathering pace in anticipation of the January transfer window.
In recent games the former Malaga coach has elected for back up keeper Costel Pantilimon, who has kept four clean sheets and conceded just two goals in five straight victories, keeping Hart out of the side to much controversy.
As the position of Hart is far from certain at the moment, it does look as though Pellegrini will bring in a new keeper to the club to at least provide more competition for the squad. The window gives Pellegrini the chance to bring in the keeper of his choice,...

Manchester City might be denying that Joe Hart will leave the club during the January transfer window, but we all know that there is a distinct possibility of this happening. In any case, there are now significant doubts about his ability, and the club are likely to seek a top new goalkeeper that at very least will put some pressure on him if he stays.
Therefore, I thought it was a good idea to look at some of the potential players that Man City may look towards in January. For the purpose of this slideshow, I am looking a players currently performing in England.

In an international match between two big rivals, that was billed to be thrilling, the actual game, unsurprisingly failed to live up to the hype.
In the end it was Arsenal defender Per Mertesaker’s first-half header that proved to be the difference, meaning England lost consecutive games at Wembley for the first time in 36 years.
England started the game brightly, with Andros Townsend enjoying a good few touches of the ball early on and causing the Germany back line trouble.
However, Germany quickly settled into their game and quickly exerted their control, forcing England to display their qualities without the ball.
The final ball was missing for England but they were showing promise as they kept on getting behind the fullbacks and exploiting the flanks.
The game then started to settle out, before Germany popped up once again to show their talents and test Joe Hart.

England may have booked their place at the 2014 World Cup with a pair of surprisingly impressive wins against Montenegro and Poland, but already any optimism they might have about the tournament itself is being tempered by a sensible amount of caution. Realistically England have very little chance of returning from Brazil in the summer as World Champions. The Fa and its chairman, Greg Dyke, have accepted that England won’t win next year, setting their sights instead on triumph in the already controversial Qatar 2022.
Whether it ends up being played in summer or winter, is the 2022 World Cup a realistic target? And how might England line up nine years from now? The following is a possible starting 11 for England’s opener in Qatar. Would this team have what it takes to beat the best?

Manchester City host Cska Moscow hoping that the return fixture in this fourth game of Champions League group D is not marred by racist abuse. Yaya Toure was targeted by Russian supporters in their last meeting and that led to widespread condemnation and a UEFA partial stadium ban.
Sergio Aguero struck twice to sink Cska in October and another win for Manuel Pellegrini’s team at the Etihad would take them onto nine points. Joe Hart will remain on the bench after losing place to rangy Romanian stopper Costel Pantilimon following several high profile errors.

Cska meanwhile came from behind to win their weekend league fixture at Volga Nizhny Novgorod.

A lot has been made about Joe Hart’s recent performances, and it has left many question marks over the heads of not only Manchester City fans, but those of England to whether Joe Hart is the right man to be between the sticks when it comes up to the World Cup. I would be one of the first to say that Hart has more than a fair share of errors recently, but show me a goalkeeper who hasn’t had a bad patch in their career.
The ironic thing is that months ago, this was a keeper who was mentioned as one of the best in the world, but now every media outlet is attacking like vultures on how a string of errors means that he is no longer our best option for England, and deserved of a shake up in the City squad.

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini is undecided who will start in goal for his side’s game against Norwich at the weekend following Costel Pantilimon’s display against Newcastle in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday.
According to the BBC, the City supremo has been left in a quandary as to who to play between the sticks after No.2 Pantilimon put in an assured display last night.
Hart is both City and England’s first-choice goalkeeper but has been guilty of making a series of clanging mistakes in recent weeks, and has had his position for club and country called into question of late.
“Whichever keeper plays will have my support,” said Pellegrini.
“Costel normally plays in the League Cup and Fa Cup so it was an important game for him.”
When pressed on whether the Romanian – who made a series of superb saves against Newcastle, including...

Newcastle United gave a much better account of themselves than their last meeting with Manchester City, but still lost in extra time to Manuel Pellegrini’s team in round four of the Capital One Cup.
Alvaro Negredo came off the bench to score the first of two goals for the visitors after a rather lacklustre regulation 90 minutes. Strike partner Edin Dzeko was also on target. City march on to the quarter-finals despite being second best for much of normal time.
Both teams were much changed after suffering morale sapping defeats to rivals following late winners at the weekend. Newcastle were put to the sword by near neighbours and bitter rivals Sunderland, ensuring the Northeast bragging rights remained on Wearside.
City meanwhile succumbed to a rejuvenated Fernando Torres as Premier League titles rivals Chelsea gave them a 90th minute sucker punch following another defensive mix-up that put the...

Blunder keeper Joe Hart will be dropped for Manchester City’s visit to Newcastle United in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday and could even lose his place against Norwich at the weekend.
According to the Telegraph, City boss Manuel Pellegrini has finally lost patience with the gaff-prone No.1 and will give Costel Pantilimon a chance to shine tomorrow.
Hart also faces an anxious wait to see if he will reclaim his place for the weekend Premier League game against Norwich, after putting in a series of erratic performances.
The England international was badly at fault for Chelsea’s last-minute winning goal at Stamford Bridge on Sunday and Pellegrini pointedly refused to give his public backing to the shot-stopper in his post-match interviews.
It appears as though the latest clanger at the weekend, which saw him rush off his goal-line to block Fernando Torres, only for the...

Manchester City ‘keeper Joe Hart has been guilty of a number of high-profile errors in the last 12 months, and there’s a growing support for those who think he should be replaced as a result for both club and country.
Most recently against Chelsea, a mix-up at the back saw City’s own defender Matija Nastasic attempt to head a ball back to Joe Hart, but the ball evaded the inexplicably onrushing England international, and rolled to Chelsea striker Fernando Torres to score a late winner.
Mistakes are fast becoming part of Hart’s game, and former City first-team coach Platt revealed the side had plans to replace Hart before he and manager Roberto Mancini lost their jobs in the summer.
While not naming any specific goalkeepers they had lined up, many others have ideas of who they would like to see in between the sticks for the Citizens.

Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard both got on the score sheet against a spirited Poland side as England booked their place in next summer’s World Cup.
The visitors playing on the counter attack had many chances to go ahead in the first half, but missed good goalscoring opportunities.
Robert Lewandowski may feel he should have put Poland ahead after a swift break from an England corner saw the Dortmund striker through on goal against ‘keeper Joe Hart, however Lewandowski fired wide from inside the area.
Andros Townsend was lively in midfield for England, and struck the bar with a long range strike. Danny Welbeck missed from six yards after lashing a shot wide.
As England grew into the game, they stepped up their pressure and were eventually rewarded for their efforts.
Rooney settled the nerves after scoring from a Leighton Baines cross to put England 1-0 up just minutes before half-time.

Tomorrow night, the collective nation will hold its breath as England play host to Montenegro in a must-win World Cup qualifier at Wembley Stadium.
Group H of the qualifying campaign is finely balanced with the Three Lions currently sitting top on 16 points, but closely shadowed by Ukraine and Friday’s opponents on 15 points.
With just two games to go, one slip up from Roy Hodgson’s men could be fatal, which is why it is critical he gets his team selection spot-on.
Barring injury to Ashley Cole and the extended absence of Theo Walcott, Hodgson has virtually a fully fit squad to select from tomorrow, and here, we predict his starting XI.

Joe Hart is the most talented English goalkeeper since David Seaman.
There is little debate about that and the anti-dandruff spokesman’s emergence as first choice for Manchester City appeared to have solved the crisis England had between the sticks in the years after Seaman’s retirement.
This season, though, a repeated series of serious errors in big matches has called Hart’s reliability into question.
According to Opta stats, since the start of last season only two goalkeepers in Europe’s top leagues have made more errors that led to goals than Hart. And that’s just in league football.
Last week in the Champions League, Hart’s flapping at Franck Ribery’s shot early in their game against Bayern Munich was the start of an utter demolition from the European champions.
Against Everton on Sunday Hart was well placed to save Romelu Lukaku’s 16th minute shot but...
