- Playwright, Poet, Illustrator Humorist and Author who was once called the Charles Lamb of his day.
- Known for his wit, once when a fellow Lamb's member declared how grossly insulted he was after overhearing that another member wanted to offer him $50 to resign from the club, Herford replied "Hold out for a hundred, you'll get it".
- His wife Margaret was also an author and playwright and had a working relationship with her husband throughout the years of their marriage. Margaret was in poor health at the time of her husband's death and would only survive him by a few months.
