Keigo Higashino's oeuvre needs no introduction since he is one of the foremost writers of contemporary Japanese fiction. Crime fiction is a wide banner, especially in Japanese literature, but this writer has made a name for himself through page-turners involving complex characters and spiraling perplexities. I sailed through “A Death in Tokyo” (2022), a who-done-it thriller which is the third installment of the Detective Kaga series, preceded by “Malice” (2014), “Newcomer” (2018) and followed by “The Final Curtain” (2023).

Crime fiction authors face a unique challenge: they must unveil the story as perceived by its diverse characters. This task involves presenting the narrative through multiple viewpoints, each adding depth and complexity to the unfolding mystery. In a way, we stand side-by-side detective Kaga who goes about investigating the death of Takeaki Aoyagi, along with his associate Matsumiya. The...

‘Jaane Jaan’ Review: Captivating Plot and Performances but the Execution Leaves Room for Improvement
Adapted from Japanese writer Keigo Higashino‘s The Devotion of Suspect X, Sujoy Ghosh’s Jaane Jaan is a crime thriller that is a cat-and-mouse game between a brilliantly manipulative mathematician and a determined detective. It has one engaging scene after the other to provide the viewers with a tale where nothing is as it seems at every turn. As one story branches off into another, the slow unraveling of mysteries and the sly withholding of information provide the film with a sense of intrigue until the very end. The story arguably has something to say about the immoral acts that attraction and affection can sometimes make us complicit in. While navigating the complexities of human nature, delving into the depths of desire and the blurred lines between right and wrong. But as the film reaches a resolution, it does not leave the audience questioning their own moral compass and...

With Jaane Jaan, director Sujoy Ghosh marks two decades of filmmaking beginning with ‘Jhankaar Beats’ in 2003. However, it was Ghosh’s ‘Kahaani’ that catapult both Sujoy and Vidya Balan’s career over night. The streak somewhat continued with his 2016 ‘Kahaani 2: Durga Rani Singh’ followed up with ‘Badla’ in 2019. With his latest streaming release ‘Jaane Jaan’, the spark seems to be missing. ‘Jaane Jaan’ is an adaptation of the 2005 Japanese novel ‘The Devotion of Suspect X’ by Keigo Higashino.
Usually when we happen to see a thriller or an investigative story, we as audience, tend to frame our minds and take sides basis what unfolds on the screen. In case of Jaane Jaan, there comes a point in the story that one remains undecided as to whose side we are on. We are sucked into the narrative and things start to reveal but of the three key characters we remain...

Jaane Jaan (Netflix)
Kareena Kapoor, Kalimpong and Keigo Higashino are the three factors that make Jaane Jaan a whiplash-sharp,hefty whodunit.
Subtle and supple, the crime thriller based on Higashino’s mysterious and kinetic novel The Devotion Of Suspect X projects the protagonist as being as hapless and heroic as Hitchcock’s heroine.
There are a 2008 Japanese film Suspect X, 2012 Korean film Perfect Number and 2017 Chinese film The Devotion of Suspect X , all based on the same Japanese novel. Jaane Jaan compares favourably with all the movie adaptations of the novel. Director Sujoy Ghosh makes the original enigmatic ballad on sublime love during a spell of crime, evocative and poetic without trying to be either.
There is an easy fluency in the narrative , and credit for it must go to the two leads Jaideep Ahlawat as Kareena’s unconditionally besotted neighbour who brings a zen-like grace to his borderline-stalkers’ role.

Filmmaker Sujoy Ghosh shared how destiny has played its role in assembling his ‘ideal’ team for the streaming film ‘Jaane Jaan’, starring Kareena Kapoor Khan, Vijay Varma and Jaideep Ahlawat.
Casting Kareena, Jaideep and Vijay for the film was not just a random choice but a result of luck, skill and some good vibes.
Sujoy said that it’s like they were meant to work together. Kareena’s unwavering interest in ‘Jaane Jaan’ brought Sujoy his ‘Maya D’Souza’.
Speaking on casting Kareena for the role, Sujoy said: “It felt like the universe was at work because it was such a huge coincidence that led up to Kareena being cast in the film. When I first got the rights to the film, I told no one about it.
He continued: “It was right then that Kareena called me up talking about how she wants to be a part of a film like this.

Keigo Higashino is one of the masters of mystery/crime novels, with his works being quite popular while frequently receiving movie and TV adaptations. As is common in Japanese books of the category, the whodunnit element in the majority of his works is actually a secondary one, with the why and how being the main ones. “Malice”, the fourth book of his featuring police detective Kaga as the protagonist, follows the same path, as a confession about the murder is offered early one, providing, though, not an ending, but the beginning of a series of plot twists.

“Blind” will shoot in a start-to-finish schedule in Glasgow, adhering to Covid-19 protocols.
Sonam Kapoor (“Veere Di Wedding”) headlines the cast, which also includes Purab Kohli (“Sense8”) and Vinay Pathak (“A Suitable Boy”).
“Blind” follows a woman who loses her sight after a car accident, only to find her other senses develop, allowing her to help the police in an ongoing investigation.

China is a big market for Bollywood, with several Hindi-language releases doing very well at the box-office there. All signs pointed to a local remake from the Chinese industry coming soon and the first one that won out the 2015 Ajay Devgn and Tabu starring “Drishyam”, itself a remake of the Malayalam language film by the same name which has already been redone in different languages across India. Remaking this particular story over other popular titles was an interesting gamble, but one that really paid dividends, because it did exceptionally well. It opened at #1 on the box office and despite of releasing only in December, it managed to break into the top 10 highest grossing films on 2019 in China and ended up as the last box office hit in the country before everything shut down thanks to the coronavirus pandemic.

The classic whodunit genre is seeing a revival of sorts, with tentpole Hollywood blockbusters like “Murder on the Orient Express” and “Knives Out” leading the way and recently even Netflix jumping on the bandwagon with the Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston starring “Murder Mystery” and the Hindi-language film “Raat Akeli Hai” proving to be hits for the streaming platform. Yet another project in the same genre which saw a fair amount of success was 2019’s “Masquerade Hotel” by Masayuki Suzuki, which is based on a Keigo Higashino book and was produced and released, like many Higashino adaptations, after a long drawn-out bidding battle over the book’s rights.

Bringing together one of the most cult directors (Miike), one of the most popular crime novelists and a great cast seems like a recipe for an inevitable success. How this film managed to be so mediocre, remains a mystery for me. Let us take things from the beginning though.
Higashino, in one of his most surrealistic (even sci-fi one could say) works, bases its story on the concept of the Laplace Demon, a creature that knows the precise location and momentum of every atom in the universe, and thus, can predict everything that will happen in the near future. The film and the actual story, however, begin much differently, through a case of the murder of two people being poisoned to death by hydrogen sulfide at hot springs located in different regions. The police is perplexed and ask Shusuke Aoe, a geochemist college professor, to help, but...

Even on one of the quietest weekends of the year, new U.S. animated release “Wonder Park” failed to inspire Chinese audiences as much as Hong Kong and Indian movies already in their third weekend in theaters.
Starring the voice talents of Matthew Broderick, Jennifer Garner, Mila Kunis, and Ken Jeong, among many others, the film tells the story of a young girl who has adventures when the amusement park she thought only existed in her imagination comes to life. It is the directorial debut of Dylan Brown, an animator who had worked on films like “Monsters Inc.,” but who was fired by Paramount in January 2018 due to allegations of inappropriate conduct with women and is thus uncredited.
“Wonder Park” came in third with just a $3.3 million debut weekend, according to figures from consultancy Artisan Gateway. The film opened March 15 in the U.S.

Hong Kong’s “P Storm” continued to wash over the China box office during another lackluster weekend. The film enjoyed an $18.5 million haul in its second weekend, down 55% from its $39.8 million opening, according to data from Artisan Gateway.
The thriller is the fourth installment of a franchise that follows actor Louis Koo as a corruption investigator rooting out crime, this time inside a prison. The film has already brought in a total of $89.4 million, enough to crown it the most lucrative in the series yet. The franchise record was previously held by last year’s “L Storm,” which made $66 million. The Maoyan online ticketing platform predicts that “P Storm” will bring in $114 million overall. A fifth film in the series is set to shoot in August.
Indian black comedy “Andhadhun” pulled ahead of Warner Bros.’ “Shazam!” into second place with $10.3 million over the weekend, more than double the Hollywood blockbuster’s earnings of $4.8 million.

The film is directed by Yukihiko Tsutsumi and stars Ryoko Shinohara and Hidetoshi Nisjijima. Its world premiere is on Monday as a gala at the Tokyo International Film Festival. It releases in Japanese theaters on Nov. 16.

The knock on remakes, particularly ones that come mere months apart, is that there’s little in the way of context to justify them, even when a property crosses cultures. Such is the case with Namiya, Han Jie’s Chinese retelling of Keigo Higashino’s The Miracles of the Namiya General Store, whose Japanese adaptation by Ryuichi Hiroki came roughly four months before. The nostalgia-heavy book was a decent seller in China, and superstar Jackie Chan’s appearance as the title character could help draw in curious comparison viewers in other parts of Asia, but what regional alterations there are don’t add much to...

With almost overwhelming praise from Chinese audiences, Youth delivered a hat trick and added $51.3m. Suspect X is a mystery/drama from Japan, the movie follows police officer Kaoru Utsumi (Kou Shibasaki) as she tries to solve the mystery of who strangled and mangled a man. However, as the mystery spirals out of control, she is forced to enlist the aid of the brilliant physicist Manabu Yukawa (Masaharu Fukuyama).
Although he is able to figure out that the actual crime was committed by the brilliant mathematician Tetsuya Ishgami (Shinichi Tsutsumi), figuring out how and why he did it, as well as proving it, becomes the battleground between two men who were once colleagues.
As the plot around the murder deepens, romance blooms very quietly between Kaoru Utsumi and Manabu Yukawa, culminating in a climax that requires all characters to apply their logic and intelligence in order to win the day.

Over a year ago, a film adaptation of Keigo Higashino’s novel Yoake no Machi de was included as part of Kadokawa’s 2010 lineup, but no further details were announced in the following months. Earlier today, the project finally resurfaced with the announcement that Kyoko Fukada (28) and Goro Kishitani (46) will co-star in the film and Setsuro Wakamatsu (Whiteout, The Sun That Doesn’t Set) will direct.
Higashino’s novel, which has sold over 1.2 million copies to date, is set in Yokohama and was originally inspired by the Southern All Stars song “Love Affair ~Himitsu no Date~”. A chance encounter between Akiha Nakanishi (Fukada) and her boss Kazuya Watanabe (Kishitani) at a batting cage leads to friendship and, eventually, an adulterous love affair. However, Kazuya soon learns that Akiha is suspected in the murder of her father’s lover—a 15-year-old case which is set to reach its statute of limitations on March 31st.
