“From the mind of Kazuo Umezz, undisputed master of Japanese horror manga and creator of The Drifting Classroom and Orochi, comes Cat-Eyed Boy! This deluxe edition contains five classic horror stories featuring a mysterious and dangerous cat-eyed boy who lives among humans, comes from the world of demons, and is despised by both. In four morbid tales, he interacts with humans and monsters to often-devastating ends. Then, in a final story, Cat-Eyed Boy must decide where his true loyalties lie—or if he has any loyalties at all.” (Viz Media)

Violence in cinema has always been a polarizing element, with film buffs frequently fighting about the dilemma of beauty versus violence, with the question essentially separating two of the larger groups of audiences, the art-house and the cult ones. The truth remains that violence has been used in different ways throughout the history of cinema, both to entertain in its simplest form (torture porn is one terms associated with this approach) and to present intricate comments by shocking. In this list, we have included movies that include both, while also highlighting that artfulness can also be found within violence, as much as mindless action. Considering that violence does not always equal action and with an effort to include as much diversity in its presentation as in the selection of the filmmakers included here (we failed miserably with Miike though), here are 40 of the most violent Asian movies ever to be shot.

With over a decade of dominance in the comic space, the availability of manga continues to only grow. This year alone saw notable announcements for titles held in high regard but unavailable here in the West, such as “Homonculus” and “Innocent”. It is, undeniably, an exciting time to be a manga fan and there is never a lack of interesting titles to discover.
Looking back on the best manga of 2022, there was a focus on mature titles dealing with complex themes, impressive omnibus releases, and a few new editions of classic titles. We will count down to our top manga release of the year.

Check out the music video for Lilac from the ten piece “brutal orchestra” known as Vampillia. The track features vocals from the iconic Jun Togawa, frontwoman for such influential bands as Yapoos and Geurnica. The grotesque music video was put together by “Toolate” and Tomomi Komazaki for the album “The Divine Move”.
The visuals, that feels reminiscent of the work of standout mangakas’ like Nishioka Kyoudai, Hideshi Hino or Shintaro Kago, offers a disturbing backdrop too the otherwise serene track. Additionally, Togawa’s vocals elicit a strong emotional response, sung with the bravado that made her an icon and innovator of the rock and pop genre.

How did you first become interested in publishing?
I think since always, or since I started to read comics seriously; not so early, I was about 17 years old. When I was 20, I worked in a detergent shop for about 5 years, and all the while I was an active collector in the underground comic world.

Collecting 14 short stories from the most enigmatic, strange and absurd mangakas’, “Comics Underground Japan” offers a brief look at some of the most diverse and unique talent the country has to offer. Featuring creators such as Ebisu Yoshikazu (“The Pits of Hell“), Suehiro Marou (“The Laughing Vampire“) and Kazuichi Hanawa (“The Early Years“) the anthology acts as an all star collection embodying the punk rock spirit of the independent creators.
“Comics Underground Japan” acts to showcase a diverse group of talent, both well known in the west such as Hideshi Hino and Suehiro Marou and more obscure creators such as Muddy Wehara and Carol Shimoda. While each creator’s work is notably distinct, the collection does tie the creators together in various ways. “The Boy From Hell” is screening at Slash Film Festival 2019
“The Boy From Hell” was originally a part of a limited TV series, which adapted works of the infamous Mangaka Hideshi Hino. Given the production was a TV release, fans of Japanese cinema, and especially low budget horror, will have some familiarity with the quality of these productions. This does not act as a deterrent, but rather a way to quickly summarize the overall quality. However, it is within these restraints that director...

As far as underground horror goes, few series have quite the same reputation as Guinea Pig. From 1985 to 1988, the Japanese series unleashed all sorts of hell across six films, each capturing their own little slice of atrocity. While they were disconnected in plot, and often in theme, they all had one thing in common: they were incredibly transgressive.
Unfortunately, a lot of them were just schlock, too. The first Guinea Pig film, Satoru Ogura’s The Devil’s Experiment (1985), was a wreck. Despite its bizarro premise of trying to replicate a "found" snuff tape, the film is little more than a misogynist demo reel for some rubbery gore effects, quickly abandoning its premise for overly flowering editing and shots that make you wonder why the killers seem to care so much for impossible camera setups. It was a rough start to the series, and to make matters worse, the sequels...
