- Was one of ten children born to an Iowa farmer and his wife.
- Served in the Coast Guard during WWII.
- Dropped out of high school and moved to Nebraska, where he studied acting at the Omaha Playhouse.
- According to Laura Wagner in her article on Holdren in the Winter 2012/13 issue of Films of the Golden Age, when film and TV offers dwindled in 1960, he retired and became a bookkeeper for a Hollywood commercial agent and then worked as an insurance agent.
- Died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He was buried at Valhalla Memorial Park in North Hollywood.
- Is interred at Valhalla Memorial Park, North Hollywood, California, USA.
