- Like producer Sam Zimbalist, he was awarded his Oscar for "Ben-Hur" posthumously. He and Zimbalist both had died while the movie was still being filmed.
- Received two posthumous Oscar nominations in the same year - for "North by Northwest" and "Ben-Hur". He won for "Ben-Hur".
- Graduated from the School of Architecture at the University of California. Spent his entire career at MGM, from 1934 until his death in 1959, as right hand man for department head Cedric Gibbons. He was reputed to have immense knowledge on all technical matters.
- His two Oscar victories were posthumously: he died a month prior to the award in April 1959, when he won for his work in Gigi (1958) and later on he would receive two nominations in the Best Art Direction-Set Decoration category, for his works in North by Northwest (1959) and Ben-Hur (1959), winning for the latter.
