- Wrote the words to "The Battle Hymn of the Republic", using the melody of the song "John Brown's Body Lies A-mouldering in the Grave." Published 1862.
- She was the first woman elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters (in 1907).

- She created, in 1891, the American Friends of Russian Freedom, and serving as president, in 1894, of the United Friends of Armenia.
- She founded, with Lucy Stone and others, the New England Women's Club, (which later became the American Woman Suffrage Association).
- Inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970.
