BERLIN -- Hidden, a disturbing psychological thriller from Austrian director Michael Haneke, was the big winner at the eighth European Film Awards, Europe's Oscars, taking home five EFA statuettes, including best picture, best director and best actor for star Daniel Auteuil. Hidden, which traces the gradual disintegration of an upper-middle-class Parisian family tormented by a series of threatening and voyeuristic videotapes, also took the EFA best European editor nod for Michael Hudecek and Nadine Muse and the Prix Fipresci, awarded by European film critics. It was a crowning achievement for the French-Austrian-German-Italian co-production. Hailed by many critics as Haneke's best work, Hidden premiered at this year's Festival de Cannes, where it walked away with the best director Palm.

MADRID -- Michael Haneke's Cannes favorite Cache (Hidden) and Susanne Bier's family drama Brodre (Brothers) led the pack in nominations for the European Film Awards 2005 when the candidates were announced Sunday at the Seville International Film Festival. Haneke's French/Austrian/German/Italian thriller -- which landed Haneke the top directing honors at this year's Cannes International Film Festival -- was nominated for seven categories for the European Film Awards, including film and director, as well as actress (Juliette Binoche), actor (Daniel Auteuil), script (Michael Haneke), photography (Christian Berger) and the newly created category of editing (Michael Hudecek and Nadine Muse). Bier's much applauded Danish/British/Swedish/Norweigan film, which won the Audience Award at Sundance in the World Cinema category, took nods in all the same categories, with the exception of photography.
