YouTube, a day after formally launching its revenue-sharing program for YouTube Shorts creators, reported 7.96 billion in advertising revenue to close out the holiday season, falling short of Wall Street expectations of ad revenue crossing the 8 billion mark.
The video giant’s fourth-quarter ad revenue is almost an 8 percent decline from the previous year, when YouTube ended 2021 with 8.63 billion in quarterly ad revenue. The slowdown is a marked change for the Google-owned video giant, which had a strong 2021 that saw YouTube surpassing its ad revenue earnings by 1 billion at one point. But since then, YouTube has seen a decline in its ad revenue due to a slowing ad market that has impacted most major tech companies. Under parent company Alphabet, Google advertising also dropped to about 59 billion during the fourth quarter, down from the 61.2 billion seen at the end of 2021.

YouTube Originals show “Behind the Beats” has clocked up almost 12 million views since the release of its first eight episodes, which began on Nov. 17. It has 6.7 million subscribers. The 26-part animated music anthology is produced by leading French animation company TeamTO, with rights clearance firm 22D Music Group, in partnership with public broadcaster France Télévisions.
The series takes viewers behind the scenes of the emergence of key trends in the global music scene, such as punk, grunge, techno, funk and salsa. Each six-minute video features three tracks and has a lead protagonist – such as Debbie Harry in the first episode, “Punk + Disco = New Wave.”
The series has a fast-paced music video/video game graphic style and the narrative revolves around how young musicians made their dreams come true, in interaction with local music scenes and other artists.

Since launching a channel of its own in 2012, GoldieBlox has paid close attention to YouTube. The toy company has collaborated with a handful of notable creators, including Karina Garcia and Simone Giertz.
For its latest series, GoldieBlox is partnering with YouTube itself. It has teamed up with the platform’s YouTube Originals unit for The Eggventurers, an animated series that will use anthropomorphic eggs to convey scientific concepts to children.
In each episode, the titular Eggventurers use simple machines, problem-solving skills, and other scientific concepts to “crack” cases without cracking their shells. The series is aimed at preschool-age children and is designed to be light on words but big on fun. As seen in the show’s trailer, the heroic group of ova will assemble Rube Goldberg-style contraptions. With their pulleys, levers, and inclines, The Eggventurers can entertain their impressionable audience while simultaneously modeling the basic forces of physics.

YouTube has reduced the size of its Originals team this year, but it continues to push out a diverse collection of programs for its youngest viewers. YouTube Kids is the home of Behind the Beats, a YouTube Original series that tells the stories of Snoop Dogg, Blondie, and other musical pioneers.
Each installment of Behind the Beats will sit at the intersection of two musical genres. The Snoop Dogg episode, for example, will follow a young Calvin Broadus as he fuses funk with gangsta rap. The music legends featured in the series will be animated in a blocky, 3D style, and their hit songs will serve as the soundtrack.
Behind the Beats will premiere on November 18, when the first four installments of its 26-episode first season will arrive on YouTube Kids. The five-minute videos will be available around the world, but they won’t be immediately accessible in France. Paris-based...

YouTube Originals will launch on Nov. 18 “Behind the Beats,” a novel animated pop music anthology series produced by France’s TeamTO and 22D Music Group in partnership with France Télévisions, the French public broadcaster.
Episodes 1-4 of the novel history of pop will also debut on the YouTube Kids app, YouTube Originals Kids & Family announced on Wednesday.
YouTube and TeamTO have shared first-look images from the series in exclusivity with Variety.
The deal sees YouTube launching the series worldwide but with a one-year holdback in the French language, where France Télévisions has first-window exclusivity.
“This new animated musical series from TeamTO hits a sweet spot for family co-viewing, filling a gap for parents who want to watch something together with their kids that they actually will enjoy,” said Craig Hunter, global head of kids & family originals for YouTube.

YouTube earlier this year wound down most of its originals division, in a significant pullback on its investment in scripted and unscripted programming.
But it’s not totally out of the game: YouTube is continuing to bulk up its slate of kids and family originals, as part of its previously announced 100 million fund earmarked for kids, family and educational content.
YouTube announced the greenlight of four new projects: “Mindful Adventures of Unicorn Island,” an animated series from Lilly Singh set to premiere in 2023; “The Big Tiny Food Face-Off” from B17 Entertainment; “Buster’s Big Halloween” from Moonbug Entertainment; and music series “Jam Van.”
YouTube also announced the Season 2 renewal of popular preschool series “Tab Time,” starring Tabitha Brown, an actress, vegan foodie and mother — aka “America’s mom.” Tabitha (or “Ms. Tab” as the kids call her) taps into her skills as a cook, storyteller, mom and motivational leader, to...

The BBC is heading back under the sea with Blue Planet Live – a spin-off of the hugely successfully Sir David Attenborough-fronted blue-chip wildlife series.
The British public broadcaster is to launch it as a stripped four-part TV event, revisiting the wildlife and the stories of Blue Planet II, which was a huge ratings success last year with some 62% of the UK population watching it. The show will air in March 2019 and will be broadcast live from the East Coast of the U.S., the Bahamas and Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. It will look at marine animals that breed and feed at this time of year, bringing the audience closer than ever before to different species of turtles, sharks and whales and will also be exploring the last oceanic frontier ‘The Deep’ live for the first time on television.

The BBC is looking to solve the murders of Jack The Ripper in a new science documentary fronted by The Pianist and Silent Witness star Emilia Fox.
