Something Weird Video sponsors cinematic celebration of the legendary Lux Interior’s life. It strikes me on occasion that I live in a world in which there is no longer a living version of Lux Interior. And that train of thought leads to the sobering realization that I’ll never see his band, iconic, filthy, dirty and…

Chris Clor Imelda May
To mark the honor of sharing a bill with rockabilly pioneer Wanda Jackson, Irish singer Imelda May asked a friend to make her a white, fringed dress identical to the kind that the 73-year-old icon shimmies inside on stage. The younger singer says, “I asked Wanda if I could be her mini me for a day.”

In the very derivative world of horror rock, a band following the twangy template laid down by The Cramps deserves a little more attention than the scores of Misfits clones rolling off the conveyor belt on a daily basis. Psycho Charger is just such a group, and they go a step further by adding rumbling layers of industrial grind to the slithering bass lines and rockabilly attitude as gleaned from the Cramps’ late, lamented Lux Interior.

"Zombieland" — a horror-comedy flick starring Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone and (inexplicably) that girl from "Little Miss Sunshine" — hits theaters today, and since we're huge fans of gore, head injuries, violence, quips and Jesse Eisenberg, we've compiled a special playlist for the occasion. The undead have been a common theme in pop music for decades, from the Zombies to White Zombie to Michael Jackson's brain-eating-tastic "Thriller." These are our favorite zombie tunes — 13 of them, in fact, because that's extra spooky.
The Cranberries, "Zombie" - A crushing, angry song about the ethno-political violence that racked Northern Ireland for more than 30 years. It's not exactly easy listening, but it's also probably the most popular "zombie" song ever written, so we've included it here. Seriously, if you are of a certain age (say, 25-30), you can remember hearing this tune on the radio — or seeing the video on MTV — every 15 minutes or so.

For starters, I just want to make it perfectly clear that I have nothing against Winona Ryder. Veronica Sawyer will remain as one of my favorite characters of all time, and her Bjork on Rock N' Roll Jeopardy has yet to be matched. But, let's be honest, period pieces were never her thing (maybe with one exception ... but that's a big maybe). In 1992 Francis Ford Coppola released Bram Stoker's Dracula, and I've never been able to look at her the same way again.
Dracula is hardly a perfect movie, and by no means am I dumping all the blame on Winona's doorstep. But all the beautiful costumes and references to La Belle et la Bête couldn't save what was once described as a "fruitcake of a movie"; and the cherry on that fruitcake is this scene between Gary Oldman (as the bloodsucking Prince of Wallachia) and Ryder as Mina Harker.

Part industrial synth and sample machine, part surf rock, part evil seduction comes Psychocharger. A sleazy act from NYC’s gritty Psychobilly scene. Their recent release, Curse Of The Psycho blends horror movie samples, dark riffs, heavy drum beats, and dirty surf guitar in a manner that would do Lux Interior and Poison Ivy proud.
The album opens with an eerie movie sample transitioning into the opening Voodoo guitar riffs of the title track. The album continues to ramp up the velvet sleaze with “Grave Robbers from Outer Space”. The spooky, high-octane burns up with “The Return of the One Percenter” a reference to the Hells Angels of old, as the one percent of bad bikers in the late 60’s. “Route 666” keeps the hot rod fires stoked with brazen cherry red evil. “Hunting for Elvis” is a spooky tribute to the hunt for the living (or undead) king of rock and roll.

For 1980s horror fans, The Cramps are certainly noteworthy for providing the awesome track "Surfin' Dead" to "Return of the Living Dead." For punk fans, The Cramps are going to be remembered for their rockabilly B-horror movie style. A great band that combined midnight movie culture with punk culture. The Cramps also performed the song "Fever" for 1987's "Near Dark" and "GOo Goo Muck" for 1986's "Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2." Unfortunately, leader Lux Interior (pictured left) passed away February 4, 2009 at the age of 62. Henry Rollins posted an excellent tribute at the Los Angeles Times. I really appreciated their fascination with '50s car culture and everything camp. They'll be the first to tell you, "We're not in school right now." And so to me the Cramps were always just really fun and clever. Like the lyrics for "Garbageman," they're smart and cool, in the way that Mark Twain was smart and cool.

Originally I had planned for this to be a future blog, but recent news forced me to do this right away. I am so moved right now, that I just hope I can do them justice.
In 1973 during the start of the punk movement came The Cramps, an act initially formed out of the lovebird duo of Poison Ivy Rorshach and Lux Interior. Urban legends still depict the duo meeting as Lux had picked Ivy up as hitchhiker on his way to NYC. Being one of the key New York bands in the Cbgb scene, the act received huge attention by combining blues and surf rock with horrific yet campy lyrics and sleazy sex appeal. While not as aggressively bombastic as many of the early punk acts, The Cramps continued their own sexual revolution live on stage to every pierced punk’s pleasure.

Lux Interior, the frontman and founding member of The Cramps has died at the age of 62. Born Erick Lee Purkhiser, Interior formed the garage-punk band with his wife Kristy Wallace, who took the stage name Poison Ivy.
