- Jamaican-born playwright, poet and screenwriter. Graduated from Wadham College, Oxford, in 1952 with a BA (Hons) in English literature. Began his career as a teacher at Wesleyan University, Connecticut.
- Son of a banana farmer.
- Collaborated on four films with the director Joseph Losey. Losey brought him into film writing after seeing a play of his, and, as Jones readily admitted, taught him how to write screenplays. Their relationship was not always easy (although Losey always praised him in interviews), but Jones did say that none of his subsequent screen work had been as satisfying, even though it was usually more lucrative.
