In early 1991, 20-year-old Tupac Shakur was torn between ambitions of acting and rapping, and struggling to catch a break on both fronts. He had studied theater at the Baltimore School for the Arts and toured with the west coast hip-hop collective Digital Underground, but acting opportunities were scarce and he had yet to finish the demo tape that would launch him to stardom. His luck would turn when Digital Underground’s road manager, Sleuth, received a call from Cara Lewis, the group’s booking agent at William Morris. A film director named Ernest Dickerson was looking for actors for a movie called Juice and they invited Money-b, a fellow member of the collective, to audition. Dickerson had earned acclaim for his work as Spike Lee’s director of photography on a run of films, including She’s Gotta Have It, School Daze, Do the Right Thing, Mo’ Better Blues, and Jungle Fever.

Daughters of the Dust. Photo: Cohen Film CollectionRobert Townsend: So, what is a black film?
Charles Burnett: Don’t ask me. One retrospective you are unlikely to see is an expansive (though by no means exhaustive) program examining White Cinema in the 1990s, nor in any other period in the hundred-year-plus history of the medium. Nobody would likely think to. The idea of assembling a collection of works together by the race of the creator may seem a misinformed, act of categorization (we often refuse to even label horror cinema in such broad strokes). But perhaps the simple reason that a retrospective on White ‘90s cinema would seem facetious and ridiculous is precisely the same reason that a Black ‘90s cinema retrospective is timely and important. It is a cinema concerned with both exploring an identity, as well as discovering one. Bam has taken on this task, and their...

With the film's anniversary edition out today, Rolling Stone has the exclusive clip of the movie's defiant original ending.
The version of Juice that screened in theaters climaxes with a violent showdown between Tupac's Bishop and Omar Epps' character Q. After battling back and forth, Q knocks Bishop over the edge of the rooftop but grabs his hand to keep him from falling.

Growing up in the ’90s, my path to the glory of Pam Grier took an odd route. I was probably about 12 years old watching an HBO First Look for John Carpenter’s Escape From L.A., and they spent what seemed an inordinate amount of time fawning over this woman playing Hershe Las Palmas, the transsexual crime boss formerly known as Carjack Malone. Being a snot-nosed kid, I had no idea who Grier was. Of course, since then I’ve come to know and appreciate her as genre royalty, with a list of credits extending from ’70s blaxploitation film like Coffy and Scream, Blacula, Scream to all sorts of film and television roles spanning five decades. That said, whenever I see or hear mention of Grier, my first thought will be of her bantering in a put-on deep voice to an eye-patched Kurt Russell.

When director Ernest Dickerson released "Juice" on January 17, 1992, he effectively changed hip-hop's relationship with Hollywood. Twenty years later, "RapFix Live" will celebrate the game-changing movie on Wednesday with co-star Khalil Kain and Naughty by Nature, the hip-hop trio who contributed to the soundtrack.
Starring Kain, Omar Epps, Samuel L. Jackson and Tupac Shakur in his first starring role, "Juice" told the story of four Harlem youths who try desperately to overcome the treacherous pull of the streets. Though Tupac had a cameo in 1991's "Nothing But Trouble," his true acting debut came when he first put his acting chops on display playing the maniacal Bishop. Co-star Kain played the more level-headed Raheem Porter.
Before "Juice," there weren't many movies that effectively captured the harsh realities of the inner-city ghettos. With...

There's an unfair dichotomy between white directors and directors of color, in that whenever a black or Asian or Hispanic director helms a film, he's somehow expected to represent his entire race, and that by hook or by crook he's got to make a film solely that speaks to people of his color. Now some filmmakers choose to embrace this, and others simply make what they are going to make, race be damned. Tyler Perry chooses to don the mantle of the Voice of Black America - and so he knew damn well what he was getting into when he chose this project. He wanted to win an Oscar. And it wasn't a bad choice, taking on Ntozake Shange's seminal "for colored girls...", which is practically sacred scripture among not just black thespians but all theatre folk. It's a gorgeous choreopoem -- 20 poems set to dance and to music,...

Taking a successful play from the stage to the movies can be very tricky. For every Amadeus and A Few Good Men there’s a Agnes Of God or Night, Mother that just doesn’t connect. Tyler Perry has a good track record in putting his own stage productions on film. Now he tries to adapt another author’s work with For Colored Girls based on the 1976 Tony Nominated “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf” by Ntozake Shange. The results make for an uneven film.

Gilda(Physhia Rashad) is the tenant representative who watches over her neighbors and tries to keep the halls tidy. The departure of Mariah Carey from Tyler Perry's next film "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf" caught many by surprise, including the filmmaker himself.
Bv On Movies reports that in a letter to his fans, Perry revealed that Carey dropped out just five days out from working on the film due to her doctor's advice - despite a deal already being done and in place.
When the news first came out about her departure, speculation was rife that Carey is pregnant but she hasn't confirmed any such reports. Perry sounds as in the dark as the rest of us, saying "to tell you the truth, I don't know what that means and, unlike the tabloids, I won't speculate. All I know is that I'm waiting just like the rest of the world to find out what happened."

Being a New Yorker, I heard earlier this week that shooting had begun up in Harlem, on Tyler Perry’s adaptation of Ntozake Shange’s play, For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow is Enuf. Apparently cast and crew are in town and the cameras have started rolling. I’ll do my best to stalk the premises and scoop up as much as I can, when I can.
In the meantime, the below photos of the production just surfaced, thanks to SpoilerTV via BlackVoices – set photos showing some of the cast (Whoopi Goldberg, Anika Noni Rose, and Khalil Kain).
I’ll reserve commentary for now, until I see more; although, Whoopi appearing in all white might tell us something… or nothing. I’m told she plays God in the film. Let’s hope so, because there is no “Lady in White” in the original play

In 1992, we were in the tail end of the golden age of hip-hop. Dr. Dre had just released The Chronic, and G Funk was on the rise, but for fans of the east coast sound, there was still Eric B & Rakim. So as a nod to the good old days, today's Scenes (Songs) We Love is all about Eric B & Rakim's Know the Ledge from the 92 crime flick, Juice. The 90's timepiece was directed by cinematographer Ernest R. Dickerson (The Wire and long-time cinematographer for Spike Lee) and centered on four friends in Harlem: Bishop (Tupac Shakur), Q (Omar Epps), Raheem (Khalil Kain) and Steel (Jermaine "Huggy" Hopkins) as they wrestled with the usual urban tropes about making it out of the 'ghetto'.
