It’s safe to say The Office’s Ed Helms faced one of the most daunting acting challenges of the past TV season — succeeding Steve Carell as the manager of Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch. But while the show itself struggled a bit to find its creative footing in the post-Michael Scott era, the 38-year-old Helms — who has played the adorkably insecure Andy Bernard since Season 3 — never made his task look like work.
Tvline | You were in the unenviable position of having to step in for Steve Carell. Did you feel the weight of that?

Spartacus has returned to Starz with a new leading man.
Us channel Starz sent viewers back to Roman times on Friday with the return of its action-drama Spartacus. The new season is subtitled Vengeance, which presumably says a lot about one of its major themes.
Fans who don’t keep up with the entertainment news might have been surprised to see an unfamiliar face now in the leading role. This season Liam McIntyre has taken over the character portrayed in the critically-acclaimed first season by Andy Whitfield. Sadly Whitfield passed away last September after a battle with lymphoma that forced him to drop out of the series before the new season.
McIntyre was selected as Whitfield’s replacement after a long and gruelling audition process. The job can’t have got any easier for the new guy after he landed the role, though, given that Whitfield’s interpretation of the...

Rise of the Planet of the Apes takes audiences back to the beginning of the saga that first enthralled audiences with the 1968 movie, Planet of the Apes, starring Charlton Heston. Based on the 1963 novel by Pierre Boulle, the series spawned five more films through 1973. Now, 20th Century Fox, star James Franco and director Rupert Wyatt are rebooting the franchise and setting the action in San Francisco at the dawn of when the titular Apes took over the planet.
As seen in the film’s trailers, gone are the actors in ape suits. In the 2011 Apes film, special effects and the wizardry of performance capture have taken the emotions of the ape conquerors and made it more powerful and present.
The apes are led in an astounding performance by Andy Serkis, who previously brought Gollum to life in the Lord of the Rings films.

When the original “Planet of the Apes” movies were made in the ‘60s and ‘70s, the apes were just actors in ape costumes. Not this time around, though… now, it’s being done digitally, with the “main ape,” Caesar, animated based on the motions of actor Andy Serkis. We could call it “Ape-atar”… and James Franco was amazed at how easy it was to film scenes with Andy as an ape. (Click on the audio player to hear James Franco)Franco-serkis Of course, Andy’s not new to this kind of thing… as James reminds us, he basically did the same thing for the “Lord of the Rings” movies. (Click on the audio player to hear James Franco)Franco-serkis 2I mean he was cast in Gollum just for his voice and then I guess Peter Jackson realized what a great performance — physical performance he was giving and that he should...

New York sous chef Amanda became the ninth person to head out of Hell's Kitchen, and one of the few to get the boot despite not being nominated. Suzanne was one of the nominees because she lacked team work, while Sabrina's head was on the chopping block for not taking on the leadership role; that, and for sending out raw meat.
Last night's episode included a taste test challenge, where the chefs went head-to-head in trying to identify four foods (except Tennille, who sat the challenge out to even things out, to the delight of Suzanne). Andy kind of felt he had the challenge in the bag because he claimed he could taste ingredients others couldn't. The women eventually won the challenge, and the reward was a special dinner in the dark. The men's team, meanwhile, had to make do with polishing glasses and make all the sorbet for dinner service from hand.
