- Before starting her acting career, she moved to Newquay in Cornwall at the age of 18 and worked at Fat Willys Surf Shack. She worked as a dental nurse before enrolling at the North Cheshire Theatre School at the age of 22.

- In Coronation Street (1960)'s Siege Week, she had to act with her hands tied behind her back and with tape covering her mouth, as her character Carla Connor was kidnapped. The scenes of her bound and gagged have been edited into comical remixes on YouTube, as well as internet GIFs and memes.
- She had a five-year relationship with former Coronation Street (1960) actor Philip Middlemiss. The pair met on holiday in the Mediterranean, in a Tenerife bar in March 1995, and he encouraged her to become an actress. In August 1996, Middlemiss and King, then 23-years old, were spotted staying at the Dromoland Castle in Newmarket-on-Fergus, prompting speculation that they would get engaged. In November 1996, Middlemiss told Scottish Daily Record of his relationship with her "I've never been happier. She is a wonderful girl. I love her to death." Middlemiss has said the couple did not break up but drifted apart. In a July 2000 interview, Middlemiss said of their relationship "I was in love with Allie. She's the only person I've ever really loved. But she was working in London and I was in Manchester. In another life, if I had been a bus driver and she had worked at the local baker's shop, we would have got married and had kids by now".
- While starring in Dream Team (1997) early in her career, she posed in her underwear for a lad's mag, for which she did not get paid. She insisted in March 2007 she would not strip anymore as she was "too old" and was keen to now present a more "dignified" image. She commented that "it's too much like hard work to get your kit off. It's probably not a good idea at my age".
- Hired a personal trainer to lose weight after giving birth. She eventually lost 28 lbs (2 st).
- In August 2007, it was reported that a convicted pedophile named Kevin Sedgwick had been stalking female Coronation Street (1960) stars, including Alison, Kym Marsh, Tracy Shaw and Beverley Callard. He had been banned from the show's set in 2000 after he bombarded Shaw with love letters, and attempted to grab and kiss her in the street, while he also sent Callard a pair of scissors. A Coronation Street studio source said "The fact he is back means the current crop of female cast members will have to be on their guard." He stopped King at the studio, posing as an autograph hunter.
- She admitted that she feels she cannot act unless she has a photograph of actor Anthony Hopkins by her side.
- Despite being most famous for playing a feisty and bitchy character Carla Connor on Coronation Street (1960), she has a reputation as being very normal and shy in real life, as well as being very friendly to fans.

After she was interviewed on Radio X in March 2012, the hosts of the show described her as "very normal" and "shy". She has admitted some fans have difficulty distinguishing her from her most famous character Carla Connor, but has said "I don't really mind, though - I actually find it quite funny".

- When she joined Coronation Street (1960) in 2006, the UK newspaper Metro incorrectly reported that she had previously played a character called Milly Webster in 1982. The part was in fact played by another actress with the same name, Alison King.
- She made appearances in several adverts for popular laundry detergent Daz.

She has been named as one of the "sexiest soap females". In August 2012, Maxim named her number one of the Top Ten Sexiest UK Soap Stars. Scottish Daily Record has called her "dreamy", while Daily Mirror has referred to her as "effortlessly gorgeous", and its readers voted her as one of the Sexiest Female soap stars. Columnist Grace Dent described her as "an alluring vision, raven haired, classy, sultry and replete with guile". Manchester Evening News commented that she "normally ends up playing a feisty glamorous female." In July 2010, writing about Coronation Street for The Guardian, Dan Martin criticized the show's characters, before ending by saying "Actually, they could get rid of everyone apart from Carla [Alison King] and I'd probably still watch.".
