Just in time as Americans — and much of the world — settle indoors in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, “Black Monday” star Paul Scheer has some TV series suggestions to check out.
For the inaugural episode of Variety’s “My Guilty Pleasure,” Scheer sat down with Variety senior editor Michael Schneider to reveal his (1) TV guilty pleasure; (2) the “deep cut” show you probably haven’t heard of but he recommends; and (3) his “show-mate” — in other words, the TV series he couldn’t live without.
Of course, as “Black Monday” returns for Season 2 on Sunday, March 15, it’s also a good time to catch up on the Showtime comedy. Don Cheadle, Regina Hall, Andrew Rannells and Scheer lead the cast of “Black Monday,” an irreverent take on a group of misfit Wall Street traders who help trigger the 1987 stock market crash. (Did we mention it’s now also inadvertently timely?)

Ben Stein's not going to pile on Roseanne after her racist tweet got her show canceled -- in fact ... he sympathizes and believes her claim that Ambien made her do it. The "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" actor was leaving Mr Chow in Bev Hills Friday night when he got asked about the Roseanne debacle ... he says it's not her fault and he feels sorry for her. Unlike many other celebs, Stein doesn't think Barr's...

The creator of "The Larry Sanders Show" is baffled at everyone's reaction to Roseanne's racist tweet, because he says it was just a case of art imitating life. We got Dennis Klein Friday night in WeHo leaving Craig's, and he was quick to say Roseanne's character is a woman who's a "pig and a slob" and he thinks that character embodies the person ... and everyone including ABC knew it from the get-go. That said, Dennis...

Of the many many TV shows over the years that were about TV shows, Garry Shandling didn't just co-create and star in the very best, he starred in two of the very best. Shandling, who died suddenly today at 66 (as first reported by TMZ), was not only co-creator (with Dennis Klein) and star of the trailblazing HBO comedy The Larry Sanders Show, about the narcissistic, self-loathing host of a late night network talk show, but earlier co-created (with Alan Zweibel) and starred in It's Garry Shandling's Show, an incredibly self-aware sitcom (originally airing on Showtime, and later rerun on Fox) where Sanders broke the fourth wall, went into the studio audience, and had a theme song so meta, it puts Abed on Community to shame: You can trace an entire generation of TV comedy to Larry Sanders. Not only did powerhouse writer/producers like Judd Apatow and Steve Levitan take early jobs there,...

The Sopranos was named the best-written show in television history by the Writers Guild of America, edging out an eclectic collection of some of the most beloved and admired series. Members of the Writers Guild of America, West (Wgaw) and the Writers Guild of America, East (Wgae) voted online for the 101 Best Written TV Series, with David Chase’s iconic “family” drama topping Seinfeld, The Twilight Zone, All in the Family, and M*A*S*H*.

This is what you might call a niche-interest Seitz Asks, but what the hell: The Larry Sanders Show, my favorite sitcom, premiered twenty years ago today, and I'm in the mood to celebrate. This inside-showbiz satire by star Garry Shandling and his co-producer Dennis Klein is the program that inspired me to subscribe to HBO for the very first time, and it might be the first of the network's great artistic achievements. As I wrote in a 2010 piece for the Museum of the Moving Image's magazine, it might be the most influential American comedy series that almost no one saw. It's damned near impossible to pick a "best" episode, so I won't try. (My friend Ed Copeland did a bang-up job in his top ten list, though; it's a must-read for Sanders fans.) Instead I'll name my favorite: "Arthur After Hours," in which the fictional talk-show host Larry Sanders (Garry...

Classic HBO comedy, The Larry Sanders Show can be yours November 2! Created by Garry Shandling and Dennis Klein, the award-winning hit series "The Larry Sanders Show" follows Larry Sanders (Shandling) and the twisted inner workings of his late-night talk show. Larry.s camera-ready persona on-stage and angst-ridden existence off-stage drew millions of viewers, eager for backstage access to a show unlike any other. Throughout its six-year (1992-1998) run on HBO, the series was the acerbic Hollywood satire that everyone watched for insider humor. The innovative use of both video and film to distinguish on-air events from back stage happenings, displaying the jarring dynamic between Larry.s on-camera poise and backstage neurosis, was spot-on and never done...
