Retrospectives tributes to German director Volker Koepp and Takamine Go from Japan are featured in the upcoming Taiwan International Documentary Festival, which will kick off on Friday and run until May 9, 2021.
The Filmmaker in Focus section will include 11 films by Koepp and the festival claims that the program is one of the most comprehensive showcases of the director’s work in Asia. Koepp films “have so far only been sporadically screened” in the region, Tidf organizers said on Monday. The director will attend the festival virtually with a live online master class and a series of pre-recorded post-screening Q&a sessions.
Born in Stettin and raised in Germany under the era of the socialist German Democratic Republic, Koepp was educated at the Filmhochschule Babelsberg, before joined state-owned film studio Defa in 1970. He has made more than 60 films throughout his career.

The Dok Industry prize-winners were announced last week.
Congolese filmmaker Dieudo Hamadi’s Downstream To Kinshasa won this year’s Golden Dove in Dok Leipzig’s (Oct 26-Nov 1) international competition for long documentary and animated film.
The co-production between the Democratic Republic of Congo, France and Belgium centres on a group of disabled civilians setting off on a long journey to Kinshasa to demand compensation for the injuries suffered during the so-called Six Day War between Ugandan and Rwandan troops in 2000.
The film, selected for this year’s Cannes Film Festival and given a special mention by the Amplify Voices...

Take a trip into political art history: the state-run East German film company Defa uses the experiences of Communist artists to promote the party line and educate young people on the sacrifices of the past. Some of the personal stories are incredible, and the art covered is indeed very impressive -- writers, illustrators, a cartoonist, a film director, an actor, a journalist. It's interesting to see what the films choose to emphasize and what they choose to ignore.

Tonislav Hristov’s Love & Engineering is to open the 20th edition of the Visions du Réel documentary film festival.
The film about a Bulgarian computer engineer searching for a formula to create irresistible seductive power for four desperate digital geeks searching for analogue love will open this year’s festival in Nyon, Switzerland tomorrow (April 24). The festival runs from April 25 to May 3.
The German-Finnish-Bulgarian co-production won the Audience Award at DocPoint Helsinki and is set to be screened at Hot Docs Toronto and the Tribeca Film Festival this month.
Nyon’s 2014 edition will see the festival celebrating two anniversaries: in 1969, the Festival international de cinéma Nyon was founded by the later Berlinale director Moritz de Hadeln, and the name change to Visions du Réel was taken by present artistic director Luciano Barisone’s predecessor Jean Perret in 1995

"How Much Does Your Building Weigh, Mr Foster?, an admiring documentary about the British architect Norman Foster, by Norberto López Amado and Carlos Carcas, gives the viewer quite a lot to marvel at, which is, after all, the root meaning of the word 'admire,'" begins Ao Scott in the New York Times. "Accompanied by Joan Valent's pulsing, soaring score, the camera swoops over some of Mr Foster's largest and best-known structures and floats through the bright and airy interiors of his skyscrapers. Even before you hear Paul Goldberger (a former architecture critic for The New York Times, currently at The New Yorker) describe Mr Foster as 'the Mozart of Modernism,' you can appreciate the grace and harmony of his compositions in glass, steel and light."

More Berlinale coverage
Berlin -- The project: "24h Berlin," a 24-hour documentary capturing one day in the life of Germany's capital. The team: A 400-person crew with 70 directors under the guidance of director Volker Heise and producer Thomas Kufus. The budget: Less than $4 million.
"It's pretty ambitious, pretty crazy actually," Thomas Kufus of Berlin's Zero One Films says of his his company's epic documentary "24h Berlin." "No one has ever attempted something like this before -- trying to capture an entire city in one day."
The crazy idea came from Heise, Kufus' partner, and director of the award-winning reality series "Schwarzwaldhaus 1902."
Twenty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Kufus thought the time was right to take documentaries to the next level. His nonfiction film tries to tell not just one of the 4 million stories in the naked city, but all of them.
Unlike traditional TV docs, "24h...
