Paris-based Apc (About Premium Content) has acquired world sales rights on the six-part Finnish thriller “A Good Family,” currently filming in Estonia before moving back to Finland.
The high-end drama about love, marriage and parenthood is based on Finnish author and screenwriter Petri Karra’s 2019 novel “The Dark Light” (“Musta Valo”). The creative team takes in creator/producer Minna Virtanen, creator/writer Antti Pesonen and helmer Pete Riski, behind the crime show “Bullets,” which won the MIPDrama Buyers’ Coup de Coeur award in 2018 and launched on Walter Presents in the U.K. in January.
Virtanen said she started collaborating with Karra on the TV show concept even before his novel was published. Then Pesonen’s screenplay was polished by script editors Matti Laine (“The Paradise”) and Charlotte Lesche.

Fresh off another win at Finland’s Jussi Awards, this time for his short film “The Bouncer,” Aleksi Salmenperä is already in post-production with his upcoming feature “Bubble,” about to be presented at Helsinki International Film Festival’s industry event Finnish Film Affair in its Fiction in Progress section.
“I was sort of embarrassed by this win,” he jokes. The comedy was shot six years ago and originally intended as a part of an episodic film. At previous Jussi Awards, Salmenperä was named best director for “Distractions” in 2016, and drama “Void” won best director and best film in 2019. “Bubble,” set to premiere in the spring of next year, is bound to surprise some of his fans, however, with Salmenperä calling it “the cosiest film” he has ever made.

Sadness and a sense of unease pervade this Western-inflected drama from Estonian director Veiko Õunpuu, which is set in a outpost of Finland that feels as though it is just beyond the edge of nowhere. It is here in this small community - dominated by men, with all the problems that brings with it - that the commercial drive of mining is coming up against the more traditional reindeer herding way of life, although both are threatening to either crumble or, possibly, explode.
It's not just the choice of employment, everything here has the feel of being caught between one thing and another, including Rupi (Pääru Oja), who works for the mines but whose ageing and infirm father (Sulevi Peltola) is flatly refusing to sell his land to unpleasant mining boss Kari. Rupi is also hovering between the legal...

At twelve years old, Maria Åkerblom heard the voice of an angel. It came in a dream and she spoke its words to those around her as though in a trance. She became a traveling sensation as soon as the pious caught on, going city to city to tell God-fearing Finnish people that salvation was real. Eventually she grew into an adult with a flock of believers in tow—each devout “child” selling his/her possessions to donate their earnings to the cause. The sect became more and more insulated until abuse ran rampant and crimes led back to their door. And through it all she held tightly to her truth with many never wavering in their fealty. Their purpose relied on Maria’s sanity, so to them she was.

Local legend suggests the jolly old man in the red suit was in reality a supernatural creature that, rather than rewarding children for being good, severely punished those who were naughty. When a large herd of reindeer on which Pietari’s father depends for his livelihood is found slaughtered, the townsfolk suspect it is the work of hungry wolves that have crossed into the area from the nearby slopes. Juhani (Niilo Syväoja) has been bounced around foster homes for the last six years; he is a young teenager when he arrives at The Island, a boys’ reformatory run by Olavi (Tommi Korpela), an administrator with a severe god complex ("I am God and this is my kingdom"). Juhani has been sent to The Island because he is considered to be a hopeless case, which is apparently Olavi’s specialty, but other than his disregard of authority and reclusive behavior, we are given no signs of Juhani being hopeless. It is apparent however, that Juhani has never recovered from a severe psychological trauma -- the mysterious death of his baby sibling -- that occurred in his murky as pond-water past. Immediately following his sibling’s death, Juhani was separated from his parents (the reasons for this separation are not revealed at first). Finnish flick 'Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale' arrives in theatres both here in the UK and stateside this Friday and it's certainly been ramped up in the marketing stakes this seasonal period with screenings, trailers and even a caged Santa appearing in carnaby Street in London last week. So with an 'expected' semi-success already on the cards for Jalmari Helander's new dark fantasy flick studio fat cats across the pond are already eyeing up a potential remake! The director himself confirmed 'There's lot of conversation about the remake right now.' says Helander. 'We're seeing what's happening. It would be interesting to see an American, more mainstream version [of Rare Exports]'. - Not entirely sure that's true, and not entrely certain it's necessary whatsoever. Why is Santa a bit peeved in Jalmari Helander’s “Rare Exports”? Um, hanging him from the ceiling will just about tick anyone off, apparently. Check out a clip from the imported horror flick “Rare Exports”. You can read our review of the movie here. On the eve of Christmas in northern Finland, an archeological dig unearths Santa Claus. This particular Santa, however, isn’t the one you want coming to town. When most of the town’s children go missing, Pietari and his father, a local hunter named Rauno, come into possession of the mythological being. Rauno’s clan of hunters attempt to cash in on the opportunity by selling Santa back to the misguided leader of the multinational corporation sponsoring the dig. What ensues is nothing short of a wildly humorous nightmare — a fantastically bizzare polemic on modern day morality. Starring Per Christian Ellefsen, Peeter Jakobi, Tommi Korpela,...
