Hong Kong real estate developer turned writer/producer/director Dennis Law returns with “The Constable”, with Simon Yam headlining as a cop dealing with the trials and tribulations of life as well as criminals. The film is somewhat of a departure for Law, and sees him attempting to step away from the schlock of his recent exploitation efforts like “Vampire Warriors”, “Womb Ghosts” and “Bad Blood”, aiming for a little more substance and character depth. Simon Yam plays Lam Kwok Kuen, a veteran police vehicle squad commander who juggles his job with caring for his mentally challenged son, helped by a kindly young woman called Cheui Yan (Niu Meng Meng, “The Second Woman”). Though nearing retirement, Lam is still a force to be reckoned with, and all his younger colleagues look up to him for his law enforcement skills and strong sense of justice. Amongst other incidents and cases, trouble...

If it's action overload you're craving, look no further. Whoever edited the trailer for Simon Yam's The Constable is clearly unfamiliar with the word restraint. Out now on Hong Kong DVD and Blu-Ray, Dennis Law's The Constable hits the ground running and doesn't stop. Law isn't known for subtlety either so this looks like it could be absolutely preposterous, the only question is, can Simon Yam keep The Constable from early retirement? Judging by this first look, the answer is a big fat no. Over the top, cheesy fun? It's amazing what a few beers can do... Synopsis: Dennis Law (Bad Blood) tackles fatherly love and righteousness in his latest police movie The Constable led by Simon Yam. A long-time vehicle commander in the police force, Lam Kwok Kuen (Simon Yam) raises a mentally challenged son by himself and is near his retirement days. Despite his age, he...

Dennis Law's latest low budget actioner sees Simon Yam play a former Cid sergeant itching to get back on the front lines. Despite some interesting ideas and a decent cast, The Constable is under-developed and poorly structured, never getting out of first gear.Sergeant Lam Kwok Keun (Simon Yam) is the Vehicle Commander of the Kowloon City Police Force, a modest position that keeps him off the streets and out of danger. Despite his cushy desk job, Keun can't help but get his hands dirty cracking cases on Hong Kong's streets, bringing down everyone from rapists to counterfeiters and even bank robbers, with little regard for his own safety. It transpires that Keun was formerly in the Cid and transferred more than 10 years ago when he...

Last night, Wayne Rooney took his goals tally for Manchester United to the 200 mark, becoming only the fourth player in the famous club’s history to have done so.
The milestone came as the England international scored a brace in the comfortable 4-2 win over Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League and puts him just 11 strikes behind the legendary Jack Rowley.
Rooney is also 37 goals away from equalling Dennis Law’s record as United’s second-highest goalscorer and 49 away from tying with the saintly Sir Bobby Charlton.
And Red Devils manager David Moyes believes the former Everton man can become an all-time great at the Theatre of Dreams.
With the striker still relatively young at 27, there is every possibility he will go on to break all kinds of records at Old Trafford and overtake Charlton, a feat many once thought would never be accomplished.

Arguably the pulpiest of Hong Kong's current crop of mainstream directors - a title he has claimed from Herman Yau in recent years with Yau going all respectable on us - director Dennis Law returns to big screens with Simon Yam star vehicle The Constable. Lam Kwok Kuen, nearing retirement and raising a mentally challenged son by himself, is a police officer whose sole requirement on the job is oversee the department fleet. Despite this, he remains active in the front line of police service, putting his life on the line for sake of others, his heroism bettering even the most seasoned professionals. He fights the bad guys, putting criminals behind bars, upholding the law at any cost, for as his adage proclaims, to live...

In the past Hong Kong director Dennis Law hasn’t been one from shying away from controversy in regard to the hard core content of his movies - In fact two of his most recent horrors both were award category III ratings the highest you can get) from the board of censors - so one thing we’re pretty sure about is his latest action flick The Constable starring Simon Yam, is going to be on the violent side. But then don’t just take our word for it, there’s ass-kickery and shootouts galore to be seen in the new trailer. Just what you want in a Hk Police action movie!? The Constable opens next month. Director: Dennis S.Y. Law. Review: Adam Wing. Not to be confused with the shambolic James Corden offering Lesbian Vampire Killers, Lesbian Vampire Warriors actually started life as the less enticing – but somewhat more accurate – Vampire Warriors. Only a fool (or genius depending on your standpoint) would assume that by adding the word ‘lesbian’ you are likely to shift more copies. I mean really, it’s not like I would’ve fallen for that kind of cheap, dirty trick - thankfully I got a free copy so I didn’t have to take the chance. Lesbians are all the rage it would seem, and the vampire bubble hasn’t burst yet, so why not call your movie Lesbian Vampire Warriors? It’s not like you need actual lesbians for the movie to sell (the word lesbian is probably used once), for the most part they don’t even have real vampires – just vegetarian ones.

Stars: Luxia Jiang, Wah Yuen, Chrissie Chow, Siu-hou Chin, Pinky Cheung, Rock Ji, Rachel Lam | Written and Directed by Dennis Law
Described as a “Twilight-inspired Chinese vampire thriller” Lesbian Vampire Warriors is as far from Twilight as you can get. It’s obvious advertising spiel of course to try get vampire fans to show some interest, but in a world where most vampire fans hate even the mention of Twilight it’s to be hoped this does not turn people off, because this film deserves more.
Ar is a vampire hunter, and very much human. She befriends a vampire Max who she agrees she’ll let live as long as she does not kill any humans. Along with Max comes her family, these vampires could be described as quite melodramatic as they spend most of the time wanting to feel something, but of course as they are...

“Fatal Contact” and “King of Triads” director Dennis Law’s 2010 action/thriller “Vampire Warriors” came out a while ago, so I understand that Arrow Films needs a gimmick to get people interested in a relatively obscure action flick by a relatively obscure Chinese filmmaker. Still, the addition of the word “lesbian” to the title seems a little sleazy. Instead of selling the film on its own merits, they’re just trying to cash in on horny young males who love lesbians and martial arts. I guess you’ve gotta do what you’ve gotta do to grab the attention of consumers nowadays, but this just comes across as cheap. If they were attempting something admirable with the title change, this wouldn’t be an issue. Sadly, I don’t think this is the case. Here’s what the film is about: Vampire hunter Ar leads a simple life, slaying the...

Controversial FIFA President Sepp Blatter has dismissed penalty shootouts as a “tragedy” and insisted that football loses its “essence” when the game comes down to one and one.
In a shocking outburst, he has challenged German legend and head of the 2014 Football Task Force Franz Beckenbauer to come up with an alternative.
Blatter told the FIFA Congress in Budapest:
“Football can be a tragedy when you go to penalty kicks. Football should not go to one to one, when it goes to penalty kicks football loses its essence. Perhaps Franz Beckenbauer with his football 2014 group can show us a solution perhaps not today but in the future.”
An alternative to penalty shootouts would bring to an end a 42 year old tradition.
In 1970, in the now defunct football stadium ‘Boothferry Park’ in Hull, English football witnessed its first ever penalty shootout in the semi-final of the ‘Watney Cup’ between Hull City...

Give director Dennis Law this much: while his last few films haven't actually been particularly good, the man knows how to cut an entertaining trailer. And he's at it again with his latest, the kung fu horror comedy Vampire Warriors.
Starring Jiang Lu Xia, Yuen Wah, Chrissie Chau, Chin Siu Ho, Pinky Cheung, and Xiong Xin Xin - many of them Law regulars - this one is looking to tap into that classic mid eighties vibe, when these sorts of intentional b films were a major part of Hong Kong's film output. And, true to the spirit of that age, the trailer for this has a bit of everything: kung fu, blood letting, goofy comedy and, heck, even a bit of lesbianism. Check it out below!

There are many ways to achieve greatness in film. Novel premises or interesting spins on old ones, new tech or old tech used in innovative ways. Crossing the current boundaries of decency is another good one. As long as you have a selling point, your film will get the attention it deserves. But sometimes it suffices to just take what's already there and do it well. Nothing fancy, nothing special, just plain old solid. And that is exactly what Womb Ghost is.
My first acquaintance with Dennis Law was Bad Blood, a somewhat cheap and cheesy crime flick showing plenty of promise but never able to cash in on it. For some reason it made me believe Womb Ghost wouldn't be much different, cataloging it as a film that would sit well with the oeuvre of Herman Yau, glorying Hong Kong trash cinema. So imagine my surprise when Womb Ghost...

Property developer turned film maker Dennis Law continues his onslaught on Hong Kong cinemas with another genre outing in “Bad Blood”. As with his former outing “Fatal Move”, the triad thriller sees him working with acclaimed cinematographer Herman Yau and action choreographer Li Chung Chi, and reunites him with cast members and industry veterans Simon Yam, Eddie Cheung, Pinky Cheung, and Lam Suet. Law also manages to attract a few more action stars in the form of Andy On (recently in “True Legend”), Xiong Xinxin (“Once upon a time in China”), Ken Lo (also in the Jackie Chan films “Police Story 2” and “The Myth”) and rising martial arts talent Jiang Luxia (another “True Legend” alumnus), along with Tvb’s Bernice Liu and Chris Lai. The wonderfully titled “Womb Ghosts” is the latest effort from real-estate developer-turned director and one man Hong Kong film factory Dennis Law. With a grotesque premise that harks back to the good old days of Shaw Brothers sleazy sorcery and black magic films such as “Seeding of a Ghost”, its trailer certainly grabbed the attention and caused somewhat of an internet stir. Following on from the likes of “Bad Blood”, “A Very Short Life” and others, the film again sees the increasingly prolific Law serving up visceral entertainment in the old school Hong Kong style, pushing buttons and trying to revive the fine tradition of exploitation film making. The plot basically revolves around two women – a bar hostess called Winnie (Koni Lui, also in Law’s “A Very Short Life”), who keeps on mysteriously suffering pregnancies and miscarriages, and Zoe (gorgeous model turned actress Chrissie Chau, also in “Short of...

Very few things make me squeamish these days, but the trailer for Dennis Law’s gory supernatural yarn “Womb Ghosts” has done a fabulous job of flipping my stomach and ruining my appetite. Bleeding groins, gory fetuses, and polystyrene containers filled with wriggling worms are just a few of the tasty treats on this impossibly demented menu. If you’re the sort of twisted soul who loves this sort of stuff, you’ll be delighted to know that the film is scheduled for an English-subtitled DVD on April 28th. The good news: It’s region free! Here’s a fairly concise synopsis courtesy of YesAsia: Real-estate developer-turned-director Dennis Law has become one of the most prolific Hong Kong filmmakers in recent years, thanks to his persistence in making Hong Kong films for a Hong Kong audience. For his second film of 2010, he takes on the horror genre for the first time with Womb Ghosts.

Dennis Law’s “Bad Blood” is a triad movie only in the sense that there are triad stuff a’happenin’ onscreen, but let’s face it, this is a kung fu/martial arts movie, filled with crazy, intense whirlwind fights. Law has already shown a skill for the genre in previous efforts like “Fatal Contact” and “Fatal Move”, and this looks like a major step forward for him in terms of action choreography. The cast includes Simon Yam (he’s always good), Andy On (he can be okay), and a new face to me, Jiang Lui Xia. If you like “Chocolate” or “Raging Phoenix”, you should definitely keep an eye out for Jiang Liu Xia, who is the little lady doing all the ass-kicking stuff in the trailer you see below (via the boys at Twitch), not to be confused with the pretty lady sitting around talking with Simon Yam.

Killer Imports [1] is a regular feature on Film Junk where we explore foreign-language films from around the world that haven’t yet had their chance to shine. There’s a scene in Fatal Move that made me appreciate this film. The camera is shooting from a relatively high angle, looking down at the aftermath of a shooting in which Chinese Triad members are laying on the pavement beside a car. We see another car enter the scene quickly. And the car runs over one of the men lying on the road! Normally, in the movies, you would expect a car to swerve around a body on the road, because you would be expecting a stuntman to be lying on the road. I didn’t rewind to see if the film-makers used a dummy or a CGI facsimile, but this subversion of expectation is the visual sleight of hand that I love.

With Hong Kong cinema not always being known for its sensitive side, a category III rated drama about child abuse and murder may not initially sound like a particularly appetising prospect. Thankfully, “A Very Short Life”, which was written and directed by “Fatal Move” helmer Dennis Law, takes a serious look at the taboo subject, and whilst following in many ways the old fashioned category III true crime blueprint, he generally eschews exploitation in favour of depth and sadness. Inevitably controversial upon its initial release, the film does have a feeling of being torn from the headlines, and draws upon tragic real life cases and events. The plot unfolds very much in traditional style, via flashbacks within flashbacks, and police interrogation and confession scenes. The main story is introduced and frequently intruded upon by a fairly needless wrap around of a cop called Cat (played by exploitation favourite Pinky Cheung,...

No doubt about it, director Dennis Law can be one frustratingly inconsistent man. His work as a producer is generally solid - and, in the case of Election, occasionally spectacular - but when he steps behind the camera himself the results can vary wildly. Wu Jing star vehicle Fatal Contact, for instance, is one solid piece of pulp entertainment. The follow up, Fatal Move, however, is almost unbearably bad. And what’s next for Law? Well, let’s just say he aint about to win any ‘feel good movie of the year’ awards with A Very Short Life ...
The film is a Cat III drama that delves into the world of child abuse and from the trailer I’m honestly not sure whether this is going to be a serious treatment of the topic or veer into exploitation territory. There are definitely some moments in there that could go either way.
